What do you want Sather to say here? He has to say the Rangers will be competitive this season, just from a business standpoint. The fans can speculate all day about lottery picks but he's not going to admit that the season is lost with 28 games left and 3 points away from Columbus.

I think it’s mostly for the casual fans that aren’t going to get why McDonagh/Zucc/whoever are traded

But this talk about Grabner bringing back a 1st is nonsense. Zucc doesn't bring back what what some think. It's not nothing, but nowhere close to what you might think.

Nash is older, scores less, and is a UFA. Why would Zucc possibly not return a good value while Nash would?

Lundqvist is a future hall of famer and took this team out of the doldrums. I have almost no emotional connection to anyone else on this team, and that includes Zuccarello and McDonagh.

What I don't get is they decided to sell off assets while in a playoff position. Three points out of a wild card spot now, and they gave up.

You have youth coming into the line up next year. I get that the team needs a retool, but this season didn't have to be completely lost.

Secondly, finishing bottom 5 means nothing. If you finish dead last you have just an 18% chance at the 1st overall.

And I'm not exactly convinced with our draft record.

We're not going to go scorched earth like Arizona, but we'll be re-building like the team we played last night did.

We have assets worth quite a bit around the league (Nash, Grabner, McDonagh, Zucc, Hayes, Miller, etc). Selling them off before they expire is best, unless the belief is they fall into the next group.

Determine who from this group is worth keeping (Zibanejad, Kreider, Buch, Skjei, Shatty, Smith, Vesey). If they aren't, they should be traded as well.

Develop the younger pieces that can be viewed as depth/role players on a good team (Nieves, Ronning, Gropp, Fontaine, Day, Pionk)

Identify the new core: (Andersson, Chyil, ADA, Igor, 2018 1st rounders, assets from TDL/Draft day trades)

If done correctly, this team can be "contending" in the 2019-2020 season. They'll need to find their homerun player in this year or next year's draft, unless Chytil or Andersson are the guy.

And if they were going to sell Stepan for futures, why did they stop with him, buyout Girardi to turn around and sign some pretty hefty UFA contracts?

Anyway, I am done with this, I think I am getting too worked up. I'll leave it as, I think they are going to do what they do and one eye will be on rebuilding and the other on business and that just does not give me the faith required to keep posting at the moment as I guess it's possible I am reading far to much into this and Sather was just spouting off while Gorton was trying to put some logic into the conversation.

Not sure that's the case. They're not starting from zero the way they were in 2004. There wasn't a Chytil or Andersson in 04. Hell, there wasn't a Skjei or Zibanejad in 04 either.

They should also have some capspace to play with.

He was just on Michael Kay and said the Ranger fans are so supportive and actually called them unbelievable. Obviously some are but in general that couldn’t be further from the truth. Does he know about fan sites that constantly put down a coach with a 600 winning percentage? It’s just not true.
