News Article: A message from Glen Sather and Jeff Gorton

@Nopuckluck @NYR nope he basically just said the same thing. He was asked about AV and his future, Gorton was complimentary but said well talk at the end of the year. Putting on NHL net now they are talking about Smith.

I also got the feeling that maybe someone we aren't expecting to be traded first is actually dealt like a Miller/Hayes.
I suspect this as well. Again, it's been made known that anyone not named Henrik Lundqvist is available.

Thanks. Curious as to him too. Would love to free up even more cap space. Rangers could have near $30 million in cap space this summer.

One thing that scares the shit outta me is the draft lottery, the odds of a top 3 pick is so wide open for top 10 teams to enter. Either means we luck in or luck out. Could be a shorter rebuild or years of misey. Although I trust this management and scouting. I think we'll be alright. I never gone through a Rangers rebuild, I want a young franchise type player, it would be exciting.

For the first time in RangersTown™️ History, they are waiving the white flag and not doubling down, and you are mad?

Honey child pls... #ICantEven

Yes, I absolutely have a problem with a team giving up on the season/playoffs when they are already in a playoff position. I have a problem that the front office leaked this information over a month from the deadline giving the players little reason to care about their on ice effort.

A team in a Wild Card position should never waive the white flag. The Brooks article leaked while they were in the playoffs.

If they want to trade Zuccarello, McDonagh, Nash, etc, at the trade deadline to rebuild the farm, I am perfectly fine with that. Don't announce a fire sale that far in advance with the distinct intention of tanking.

They could have moved those assets, rebuilt the farm, and competed for a playoff spot at the same time. If they missed it by a couple of points, fine. But the Rangers are not going to draft top-3 or top-5. And if they did, what makes you feel comfortable with their draft history? To get Dahlin, they would still need to win the lottery, which is just 18% if you finish DEAD LAST.

I will never accept a team in the playoffs saying "That's it, we are toast. Time to waive the white flag." Absolutely no character.

"We care about you, and f*** you we're trading everyone because we failed at our jobs. But we care."

He was just on Michael Kay and said the Ranger fans are so supportive and actually called them unbelievable. Obviously some are but in general that couldn’t be further from the truth. Does he know about fan sites that constantly put down a coach with a 600 winning percentage? It’s just not true.
We get it, anyone who doesn't lile AV is a f***ing idiot and you're a genius on par with Stephen Hawking. Now, please tell me if I should this agree with this press conference, sir, as you should clearly be the voice of all rangers fans with your brilliant insight and wisdom.

At least they picked a good year to start moving assets

This draft is loaded with talent in the first round

The official statement is along the lines of "we will evaluate during the off season"

I don't think Gorton supported AV in anyway except for platitudes for a coach that they're not planning on firing right now.

THIS. Nothing in that statement about AV exclaimed that Gorton is pleased with AV's body of work. Brooks puts it well, they like AV, but they realize there are a multitude of problems with AV's system and coaching style and that it may be a necessity to fire him.

It's sad, but it's clear that AV's best teams are the ones where he doesn't have total control. The guy has some great ideas--his offensive style is awesome, his defensive style when he lets guys play their own game is not awful, but his stubborn personality and ridiculous (read: worthless) tactics make him a horrible head coach. His biggest enemy will always be himself, and that's something he will seemingly never learn from.

That 2013-14 Rangers team was so good because AV didn't have his fingerprints all over it. He let guys play their games, he played to their strengths, and played around their weaknesses. 2014-15 was just sheet talent. Since then, it's been a constant "Square peg in a round hole" with this coach because he cannot get out of the way of himself.

When you think about it, it's odd, because he claims to be a "laid back coach" who "lets the room motivate the players", but his play style and his requirements to run this ass-backwards system are so far fetched from this concept...

Some people like to be angry for the sake of being angry. It's one of my main problems with NY and why I am 50-50 on eventually raising a family in that environment.

But back to leaking the firsale info to Larry Brooks, it was also a message sent to these players. 100%. You want to stay here? Show some heart. Clearly this group all sulked and gave up. If that's the general attitude, I'm sorry but I don't want that as my leadership core. The room is dead. The team is rotten.

And I'm sorry, yes a few points out of the playoff but you have Peter freaking Holland and David Desharnais as two of your centers along with a Zibanejad who is playing with all the intensity of post Dec 2001 concussion Eric Lindros (for those who don't remember after the butt of the stick hit his head in SJ he came back and was very tentative for pretty much the rest of his Rangers tenure until he picked a fight with Jason Doig on Mike Richter Retirement Night and we pretty much never saw him again until post lockout Toronto/Dallas). You're not going to do any damage.

This isn't 1986 with Pierre Larouche/Mike Ridley/Kelley Miller. No one on this team up front individually is as good as those three were. There's no Cindarella run with Holland and Cody McLeod trying to shut down Crosby and Matthews.

It's ok to miss the playoffs every now and then if it means coming back stronger.

I'm just glad that for one of the few times we see these two, it's a message about owning up to the fact that we're rebuilding. Good move by the front office, and the letter to the fans was also great.

Respect.

Now fire AV on media break up day.

This is clearly a move to alert the STHers ahead of any deals.

Biggest take away is that a big deal (likely McD) is more likely than not to come to fruition before the TDL. If they were just going to ship off Nash/Grabs I can't see holding a press conference like this.

If nothing else, I am curious as to how this draft will shape up and shake out.

Almost certainly a top 10 pick, maybe in the 5 or 6 range.

Good probability of having 2 or 3 total first round picks.

The latter, 3 first rounders, would be a first. As would four or 5 first rounders in a two year span.

You'd have to go back to the 70s or 60s to find the Rangers with that many picks in the top 30-40 or so.

I’m not saying that. AV’s not perfect, he has his flaws but the constant badgering of the guy is so out of line. The team isn’t that good.

The Rangers don't have to fire AV yet to begin a search for a new coach. They can start that anytime. If the Rangers were firing AV--they would have announced it before the presser and certainly you don't fire anyone unawares. I'm not sure Q will be available and I'm not sure he'd be the right guy. I think you want someone who can grow or grow with a young team. As for firing AV now---I'm not for it because 1) this team is not going to make the playoffs anyway and while winning games is still nice--losing them could very well help us in the long run 2) I don't believe a new coach at the moment would make us an any better team and 3) I don't want either Ruff or Arniel as an interim. I don't want to give either of them a glimmer of hope. I'd let the current staff all ride out the season and let them go. I'd find my new guy and let him bring in his own staff.

As far as apportioning blame. Putting the entire blame on one or two people exonerates everyone else. It would have been wrong to put the entire blame on AV. From Gorton down to the 4th liners and the 7th D there is something to be shared. You win as a team and you lose as one. And when you lose even if you're lowest player on the roster you have to accept that you could have done more.

This isn't altogether unprecedented. The mid 70's moves of Giacomin, Park and Ratelle. The pre-lockout year that saw us trade Leetch amongst others. We're in better shape than then. We have a number of mid-20's and younger players. With guys like Nash and maybe Zuccarello and McDonagh leaving we're going find out if some of them have what it takes to be leaders--legit 1st liners etc. It also puts guys like Chytil and Andersson and whoever we draft in the first round this year on the fast track to make a real impact with the team quicker.

This team is toast.

I’m ecstatic they might finally build.

Me enjoying the ride

If AV is fired before the year is out, it has to be Ruff in the interim, right?

Yeah and they referenced both the deadline and this coming summer in the letter.

I was pretty confident they'd do something significant before the deadline, now I'm convinced they're going to do more than I initially anticipated+ disband this group even more during the summer.
