News Article: A message from Glen Sather and Jeff Gorton

You're wrong about that.

They looked past character the last couple of years for guys that can skate, and now they have a listless group that's low on effort.

They haven't have a guy that played with high character and gave it his all every night since MSL retired.

The Hagelin trade... they traded away a full effort guy for an artsy washout.

They traded or got rid of those heart and soul guys in favor of skill and skating ability and ended up with a soft group with a low competitive drive the last few years.

That's why you see character in there.
It has been so long since we had character here....people have forgotten what it actually is . It certainly is one of the biggest needs for a club to succeed in clinching that 16th win needed for Lord Stanley .

If AV is fired before the year is out, it has to be Ruff in the interim, right?

Absolutely. Vigneault and Arniel are tied to the hips. Without a coach with NHL HC experience, Arniel might have a chance of staying around to steer the ship but with Ruff, it's almost a guarantee.

Depending on who you follow, there are somewhere between 5-8 real blue chip prospects this year. Dahlen is clearly the jackpot pick. We may get there on merit but remember the draft lottery. I'll get my people doing rosaries and my friends can put together a prayer quorum.
Dobson having a great season in the Q....he could be a good piece . I hope I can catch a game of his in Charlottetown when they are in for a visit . He has been a real riser on the draft charts.

Huh? Zucc is way more likeable and a way more exciting player. I’ve never heard a single Nash chant as MSG let alone at away arenas like Zucc gets
To be fair how are people supposed to chant “Nash”? Bruins fans do the same thing with Tuukka Rask, it’s just because it rolls off the tongue.

Who do you think they have their sights on?

Too early to say.

I might have better idea by April or May. But in the age of social media, it's harder to get concrete info before something happens and a lot of misinformation is purposefully floated out there to determine where it is coming from.

It's a different world then it was 20 years ago, or even just 6 or 7 years ago.

Some people like to be angry for the sake of being angry. It's one of my main problems with NY and why I am 50-50 on eventually raising a family in that environment.

But back to leaking the firsale info to Larry Brooks, it was also a message sent to these players. 100%. You want to stay here? Show some heart. Clearly this group all sulked and gave up. If that's the general attitude, I'm sorry but I don't want that as my leadership core. The room is dead. The team is rotten.

And I'm sorry, yes a few points out of the playoff but you have Peter freaking Holland and David Desharnais as two of your centers along with a Zibanejad who is playing with all the intensity of post Dec 2001 concussion Eric Lindros (for those who don't remember after the butt of the stick hit his head in SJ he came back and was very tentative for pretty much the rest of his Rangers tenure until he picked a fight with Jason Doig on Mike Richter Retirement Night and we pretty much never saw him again until post lockout Toronto/Dallas). You're not going to do any damage.

This isn't 1986 with Pierre Larouche/Mike Ridley/Kelley Miller. No one on this team up front individually is as good as those three were. There's no Cindarella run with Holland and Cody McLeod trying to shut down Crosby and Matthews.

It's ok to miss the playoffs every now and then if it means coming back stronger.
No joke this I saw easily the best post I’ve ever read on this forum. Well done. Especially your first two paragraphs

It’s reached the George Carlin prediction of bullshit becoming inseparable from the system it ironically keeps afloat.

Grabbers scored like what...55ish goals over the last 2 years....he'll get a first...he should probably get more tbh
I don't think a first is a certainty with Grabner without him re upping to a new deal with his new team . A first for a rental like Grabner...is a high price IMO.

This Rangers season might be over already and there's no guarantee we're going to be in the playoffs the next couple years but...the Rangers will try very hard to ice a competitive team next year.....it will be a younger team and I expect it's going to work a lot harder than this year's team and I also expect it will be grittier.

The Rangers need to re-identify what their team is about. We're no longer the speed team of the league. Routinely we're getting out skated. I've been getting this kind of complacent country club vibe this year and I don't like it. There's been a lack of urgency--a we'll win the next one thing--and all of a sudden there's no time to do anything but win and they can't get out of each others way and all of a sudden some guys are finding out they're going to get moved and now they've awakened to that reality but it's too late. AV could not get them onto the proper track---that is his failure. That so many needed to be pushed or wouldn't go past their comfort zone that's on the players.

The Rangers new identity is going to be about a younger team that works hard and plays from the first whistle to the last. You can't say that about this year's team.

What do you think the new META will be in the next 3-5 years? Do you think we could add those pieces?

Teams hot in pursuit of a cup is more than willing to give up a 20th-29th OA pick for Grabner. His PK prowess is enough to win over many coaches. Then there's the goal scoring and overall speed factor. Dreger or someone said a 1st is likely the price for Grabner but I am optimistically hoping he gets slightly more than that. Not a jackpot but maybe an extra pick.

Yeah I'd ask first plus 3rd.

Not to mention his cap hit is only $1.65m

Great post. The identity I’d love to see them adopt is a hard-nosed, up-tempo north-south game like the USNTDP plays. Bob Motzko isn’t leaving his spot, but I loved the type of game he coached for the US at the WJC

Speaking as a Hab fan, I can only say that I wish my organization had the same transparency and willingness to look at long term success.

I won't comment on the GM or his abilities but I'd be applauding this if it came from our organization. At least the Rangers acknowledge the reality and seemingly have a plan.

Meanwhile in Bergevin world...

Most Efficient Tactics Avaiable.

You do everything that can make your team better of course. You do due diligence in your hunt for the best coach possible. You go after the best college free agents whether drafted or undrafted. You make astute draft picks. When free agency comes around you try to get players who are going to fit in well with your new coach and younger player core. I have to say though I don't like the idea of Mika Zibanejad as our No. 1 center. I'm okay with him as a No. 2--so if John Tavares was available in July I might seriously make a pitch to him. With no Nash and with McD and Zucc possibly gone we should have the money. Apart from that any UFA's I would sign would be younger ones in the range of 25 to 28--though I would be open to Grabner too.
