I love how well he is playing, I still think sending him down to the WHL is the best move at this point. He is a pro regardless next year, there is no need to rush here. I was higher on him than most, but I think he should build off his camp and go back for dominating juniors. That is important for a lot of players, he can elevate a team down there in the way he can't at the pro level. He will be a big part of the Canadian WJC-20 team, I think his pre-season entrenches him on that team. I just really haven't changed my mind on the long-term goal and thinking it is best to give him one more year in junior to develop and dominate games.

If he does go back to the WHL I'd like the Wings to put pressure on the Wheat Kings to trade him. Sure WK has gotten better, but they're still not great.

Seattle lost a good chunk of players while maintaining a really good group of players. He'd do well there.

While it would be exciting for Danielson to make the roster this year, the only way I think that makes sense is if he's going to play in all situations. To his credit, Lalonde is putting him out there on the PP and PK in addition to giving him lots of ES ice time. So at least he's being given the opportunity to play in all situations during the pre-season.

If Danielson is kept up (which I don't think is likely), it must come at the expense of a Top 9 spot. They won't keep him up to play 4th line minutes. So they COULD waive Fischer to make room for him, but someone else would need to be moved down to the 4th so Danielson could take a Top 9 spot. So Nate needs to be better than one of our Top 9/10: Larkin, Debrincat, Raymond, Copp, Compher, Rasmussen, Fabbri, Perron, Sprong, Berggren. The Veleno, Fishers, Kostins aren't really in the discussion.

If we were to move on from one of these guys to make room for Danielson, I think the most logical options here would be Perron: maybe something like the PIT or NYR as a trade candidate to give him a shot, and help their runs with an experienced greybeard secondary scorer and those are good enough teams in good markets where Perron might waive.

Even before his preseason, most were projecting Danielson in Canadas top 6 at the WJC. He'll just need a solid start offensively and hes a lock for the team. I dont think Fantilli will be back but Shane Wright might be, after those 2 Danielson has as good of a shot as anyone at the top center spot

TIL Shane Wright is STILL eligible 2 years after his draft. Do you really think he’ll go?

Nate Danielson.

- 11th best forward at preseason points/60.
- 8th best forward at pre-season GF%.
- Bottom3 at pre-season xGF% (of 18 forwards, only Söderblom and Kasper are worse)

Impressive start, but those raw numbers really does not give him a spot.

There's just so many people in front of him.

Unfortunately, your stats do not reflect the other 4 players on the ice with him. The "eye" stat would certainly suggest he out-performed expectations and many other forwards on this team.

Regardless of any stat, Yzerman must decide what is best for Danielson's long term development. In the long term, that is the only thing important for this team.

I think he should get the 9 games and see if the NHL is the appropriate and correct challenge for him to develop further.

Can this be done at mid-season?

Now when the team is full healthy, I just don't see this happening. But when the injury bug will hit, can you call him mid-season?

If hes in the AHL, maybe. Hes already been sent down by the Kraken, but if theres injuries and stuff maybe hes up?

Hard to say really this early

Unless I'm mistaken (very possible -- just about everyone else here has more knowledge of these arcane rules than I do): No, Danielson can't be called up mid-season.

If we send him down to juniors, then once that team's season starts, he's obligated to play there for the remainder of their season.

Which sucks, because it would be great to call up Danielson if one of Compher or Copp is injured.

If we don't have Danielson as an option, what would we do? Move Rasmussen back to center? So in this case, it might be better for the team, this season, if we could keep Danielson up -- maybe make him third-line center and push Copp down to very expensive 4th line center, move Veleno to 4th line wing, put Fischer (2 points last night) in the press box.

But it probably wouldn't be best for the player's development, or for the team long-term, so I bet we send Danielson down. And I'm fine with that.

If a center gets injured, we could call up Kasper and move Veleno up to third. Czarnik and possibly Lombardi are options too.

He can only be called up as an emergency recall if there is no one else available. And I believe he has to be returned once the emergency is over.

Big Nate looking good in the preseason games, let Nate tell Veleno that he is a bum who we dont need...

I have no one on my ignore list, but you are getting very close to going there. Every post on here and on the trade forum from you lately is running down Veleno ad nausea um. WE GET IT, he kicked your dog, peed in your cheerios and stole your girlfriend, MOVE ON!

As far as I know, the only way he can get called up before the junior season is over, is under emergency injury recall. Like if Detroit literally had no other available forwards to play due to injury/suspension they could recall him. So he won't be getting called up before seasons end unless we have like 7-10 forwards all get hurt at least.

The comparison for me is Larkin, and Dylan spent one year in the NCAA. That's the main thing, the NCAA is a much higher level of competition than playing in the WHL or juniors in general. Nate seems super mature so I think he would handle another year of juniors just fine, but I do wish he'd play against better competition. He seems to have the maturity to handle being challenged. Also, going back to Larkin, when he first made the team he was playing on Zetterberg's wing. So you wouldn't need to necessarily start Nate off at center if he was to make the Red Wings roster.

Ultimately it's a good thing that Danielson is already playing well enough that this is a problem. But the WHL contract situation is annoying because playing in the AHL seems like the best spot for his development.
