I don't see where they get these penalties from, both calls were questionable so far.
Verdict after 1 period: team NA leads, but they're letting the Russians play, much more so than Sweden did. 1-0 doesn't mean much at this point, since the Russinas have shown they're capable of locking NA in their own zone.

I agree. However, Team North America looked exceptional in the 2nd last night. Let's see how the second goes.

Yup. This game is far from over, NA needs to tighten things up. Russia was buzzing in their zone for extended lengths.

I was actually refreshed seeing this - it was almost completely absent in the Sweden game. They're more fire and dedication today. I'm hoping for a win for Team Russia.

Russia needs a quick tying goal in the 2nd, after that I think they'll be able to catch momentum and win. One can't say they're being outplayed, like yesterday, actually in the 2nd half of the 1st, Russia was sharper than NA imo.

I agree. this game could go either way at this point. I thought this tourney was going to provide great hockey, but it's surpassed my expectation.

the people refusing to like this on principle because of the hybrid teams are missing out on some entertaining games.

Russia looks much better this game. It's a close game, good hockey so far.

Or he could simply play better.

Well I mean he is terrible at hockey. Drafted about 3 rounds too early. Every mistake anyone makes is clearly because he is so bad the rest of the team feels bad showing him up so they make mistakes to make him feel better about being so terrible at hockey.

Both penalties were questionable, are they trying to help out the NA team? Strange. Let's hope the Russians won't be the only ones going to the penality box, hehe.

Actually, the game's very fun to watch - fast skating, the game going both ways, lots of offense. The Russia-Sweden was another story :).

I've not been impressed with Eichel at all throughout these WC games so far. One of a handful of team NA players I can say that about.

He plays a little more of a deliberate style of game I think, the rest of the kids just love to run like a pack of wild dogs, lol. I think Eichel likes to play that East-West game a little more than strictly North-South.

Scott Oake:
"Hi Auston Matthews. Can we do an interview?"
Matthews: "Sure."
Oake: "Auston, how awesome is Connor McDavid?"
Matthews: "Ya he's pretty fast and can do some amazing things he's a special player."
Oake: "Thanks Auston. Back to you Ron."

Eichel hate is quite easily explainable. He will always be tied to two players. These two players cover at least 80% of the HF fanbase so the odds are against him.

big eichel fan, it isn't hate, he just hasn't played good in this game. I don't know about the other games, this is the first Team NA game I have watched. I'm expecting a lot more from him for the duration of the game

Have to admit, I laughed.

This has been a fun one so far. Lots of speed and a good pace, NA can't get hemmed in their own zone like they were towards the end of the period.

I think people can stop saying Matthews isn't that fast. Watching that replay he was absolutely flying to the far post. He and McDavid made it seem like everyone else was standing still.

Eichel has been ordinary, but it's no slight against him. As a Sens fan I have seen the absolute agility and skill he can demonstrate. He can take it over soon.

Matthews is annoyingly good. I reiterate again that nothing less than a rout of Toronto in our first game is acceptable, so that he's thrown off his NHL game and regresses.

@Seattle: Matthews is agile but he doesn't seem "fast", he just has very economic strides, like a Crosby-ish thing. Wish we'd finished lower in the draft to have a chance at him.
