What year? Class of '08! Go Blue!

I had a class with one guy on the team and we chatted quite a bit. But he was a 2nd stringer at best and likely was not going pro. We were in Calc together and I remember him acing a lot of the exams like it was nothing.

I would imagine that more of the 1st stringers weren't nearly as smart and/or focused on classes.
The only athletes I remember in calc/chem/physics type courses were from the non-major sports, but I suppose there may have been some football 2nd-stringers in there and I didn't know it haha. Certainly no starters.

I had a couple classes with Dwight Helminen and Jason Ryznar (both got cups of coffee in the NHL) and wow were they dumb. Reminded me of kids from high school who didn't graduate lol. Like @Konnan511, my now-wife studied sports management and had a lot more classes with athletes than I did. She had a bunch of classes with Andy Burnes (Michigan captain in '04) and he was a pretty sharp guy, they became friends. He helped my wife pick out a Wings game to get me tickets to for my birthday when we were dating since she was only then getting into hockey. Had a great time that went into the early morning (ah to be young again), so I gotta give Andy some credit for that night lol. I graduated in '04, so probably just missed ya in AA ;)

Kasper is bigger and faster Bertuzzi, Kasper is a bit slower Larkin
The thing about Bert and Raymond is that they're in the right spot at the right time, and they read the ice well. We'll see if Kasper has the same level of hockey IQ and vision.

I think he'll be a 2C, not sure if he'll be high end or low end.

For what I saw and heard about Kasper is just that. My only question about Kasper how he will communicate on ice with players like Raymond

Because he actually definitely has Kopitar level potential and I’m tired of people acting like he doesn’t.

Anze Kopitar's best season was 92 points and a Selke.

He's never scored under 50 points in a non-lockout season.

It's not an impossible projection for Kasper, but it's very lofty. I don't think you'll find many neutral evaluators of Kasper's game who see that as a likely outcome.

He was praised for his hockey IQ

#teamkasper
Hockey IQ can mean a lot of different things though, both defensively and offensively. Raymond know what to do with the puck before he even touches it, but that damn Robertson kid anticipates the puck so well he looks like he's got a puck magnet on his freakin stick..

I don’t think it’s a likely outcome, if it was likely he would have gone 1St overall.

I just think that’s what his ceiling is. Not a 2C.

The size difference is pretty notable.

So is the skating difference. Kasper’s skating is not far off where Larkin’s was in 2014.

I’m not going to say that Kasper is a for sure 1st center, but I wouldn’t rule it out as a possibility with his work ethic and IQ.

Earlier in this thread I posted a range of outcomes with potential comparables. I think it’s possible he hits in multiple ranges on there during his career. We just have to have patience.

Kopitar is a great example of how good a player can be despite not really producing superstar numbers. Basically a ~70 point guy.

That is fine. But I just want to make sure when setting the bar that people realize Kopitar is indeed a superstar, he is the LA Kings, the Kings went places they had no buisiness being if it wasn't for Kopitar, he has won multiple selkes, and has been one of the preimiere players in this league for his entire career. The guy is 34 years old and still as good as Larkin is in his prime and I believe Larkin has evolved into a legit 1C in his current form (albeit not a preimiere 1C).

There is a reason that back in 2016 he was able to sign a 10 mill per year contract. He is 34 years old and no Kings fan is complaining about paying him 10 mill.

Kopitar in my opinion, as well as many others, is better than Bergeron. Bergeron has got to play with really elite offensive wingers. Kopitar played most of his career with Dustin Brown. If Kopitar had Bertuzzi/Raymond as his wingers let alone Marchand/Pastrnak in his prime his ppg would be a lot higher than it is. Kopitar also owns the same rights as Datsyuk when it comes to the arguement of not having the luxary of playing in an offensive system.

I don't know exactly where Kopitar ranks among greatest players in the last 15 years, but it's very high.

I've always seen Kopitar as the nearest comparable for Datsyuk, without the flashy things.

But sacrificing points, points come after defence. Carrying crap wingers etc.

Some of those comps were quite good. The one I think you missed and perhaps the closest for style and impact is 2018/19 and 2019/20 William Karlsson. A good skater who uses speed to be sound defensively. Contributes but isn't a huge power play scorer, while being dangerous on the PK. Stat line is something like 20g/36a.

Their size is almost identical:
Karlsson (6'1", 189 on Hockey-Reference.com)
Kasper (6'1", 187 on CapFriendly)
