James was a monster during playoffs. We have no idea how those 18 years old will be progress and if he becomes Bertuzzi twin it's a win , big win
Or he could be an unskilled player who falls down a lot because of average or below averag skating.

The black book, eliteprospects draft guide and a few other scouting reports have talked about how Trikozov takes shifts off and has very inconsistent effort. This isn't something that I'm pulling out of my ass here.
Blackbook ranks his compete level at 6.
Same as Buchelnikov.

Category - Buch vs Trik
Sense - 6 vs 7
compete - 6 vs 6
Skill - 6 vs 8
Skate - 6 vs 7
Misc - 5 vs 7

Blackbook
Triikozob rated 18th
Buchnelkov rated 80th

Or he wouldn’t have been able to put up 60 something points in 60 something games without having some skill.

Direct quote from the blackbook:

"The compete level I saw from him in the first three months of the season was so infuriating, he was an easy no-draft for me." -HP scout Jerome Berube, January 2022.

"I actually watched some tape last week. Absolutely zero work ethic in his game. Too bad because he has some talent" - NHL Scout, december 2022.

"Straight line winger with no compete. Pass." NHL scout, december 2022.

EDIT: More!

"If you only watched him in october then you wouldn't even draft him." NHL Scout, May 2022.

"At his best he's up with the big boys in this class but we seldom saw his best. He's a player I'll be interested in seeing where he ends up on draft day. Won't be us, but I think I know who is going to take him." - NHL scout, May 2022.

"Watched him more in april than I did the rest of the season combined. Much better late than he was early in the season because he got rid of some laziness in his game. He shot up our list once he started to compete, and it didn't take much to improve in that area when comparing to early season viewings. Skill was always there. I'm a big fan and I like him least in our group so that gives you an idea how high our other scouts have him on their lists." HP Scout Mark Edwards, June 2022.

I just gave you the rating.
They rated him a 6.
Same as Buchelnikov.

So if you want the so-called 5'10 winger, ovveraged, with less skill and the same compete - have him.

Damn, it's super convenient we have these accurate and definitely tangible numbers to make sure we don't have to think for ourselves.

Here's MBH emerging every summer with his Black Book.

Red Wings brass also said that Buchelnikov did get really going at 2nd half of the season.

So something agrees with the Blackbook analyze.

Just wonder... If his first half of the season was abysmal and "easy pass" for those analysts, what kind of absolute dynamite his later part of the season was?

Because statistically his FULL season was Top3 DY+1 season from last 3 years at MHL of any players.

Smells more and more for a late-bloomer which some scouts did write out too soon. Kid has been struggling with his physics or something.

Here's what I know, Bench.
However limited my knowledge is about a prospect - and it is very limited even if I did spend probably 40 hours of time on it - it's not shaped by whether or not the Red Wings drafted the guy.

A player like Dylan James doesn't go from No-Draft or Maybe-Draft to Good Player just because Kris Draper talks him up.

The scouting reports haven't changed since draft day.

Here's what EP and HP wrote about Dylan James

4th line projection if he makes it.
I don't see how he makes our board unless it's 175 names long.
He has to create something to make the NHL. Not a pick.
He's a low-probability 4th liner
Looks like a potential fourth liner.
Little to suggest NHL upsdie in his game.
He'll be a pro, but I'm not convinced there's much more upside.
“If he makes the NHL he’ll be a 4th liner and he will only get there because he works so hard.”
but he's just not overly talented...a bit of a puck pusher. And then when you factor in that he can't stay on his feet, that makes this a tough hill to climb.

vs
There were non-insignificant portions of this game where he was its best forward.

So we drafted a poor man's Alexander Semin after using the first second rounder on a kid that's "hard to play against"? Complete opposite draft philosophy?

Crap, I'd take Goyette over either of these kids, though I have not watched any tape on Buch, so take it with a grain of salt.

Edit: NMD, didn;t realize the quote was about some other kid.

Lucky for you there's plenty of tape on the kid in this thread. (Buchelnikov that is). :thumbu:

Also take my advice and read up more on Dylan James. I pointed out in the prospect camp thread the list of USHL rookie of the year winners he belongs to. Winning that award isn't easy and the guys that have done it have mostly gone on to strong NHL careers, or are on their way. I think that it shows that he has a decent probability of being something.
