Chara was an elite defensive d-man in his prime for about a decade. He's a HoF lock. Bergeron is a very good bet too.
Neither were top 5 picks. Success depends on how a team performs at the draft table. You need to draft good impact players.

Hayton needs to be an impact player if we are taking him at 5. His selection is a statement by Chayka that they have figured out a better way to identify talent; that they are able to identify players that previously did not go high in the draft but became dominant NHL players. That's a hell of a statement if true. A fireable offence if not. Chayka could have easily taken a less controversial player at 5 and not risked anything. The fact he was willing to go all in on Hayton and risk so much rings volume about Chayka and his commitment to his philosophy. I respect the move. I can't wait to see how it plays out.

Quick too.

Ehhh, the hall standards are very high for goalies. There are only 36 of them in. He's got some time left in his career to make a more clear cut case but no Vezinas will hurt him. Basically every goalie in the hall was considered at the top of their position consistently and Quick hasn't really done that for the most part. Maybe the lack of other standouts in his era will help him though.

You might be correct, though I'm too lazy to research the 36 goalies. Would his two Cups and a Smythe mitigate the lack of a Vezina?

Somewhat, I think it will make it easier on the hall voters if he ends his career well.
But I think basically every goalie in the hall since the Vezina has existed in its current form, has one. Except Tretiak anyway
I could see the standards loosening a little as time goes on. We just left an era of greatness at the position, the guys around nowadays are a lot like Quick. A couple seasons at the absolute top then they kinda muddle around the top 10. Instead of being consistently top 1-3.

Quick arguably should have won over Lundqvist in '12. But they were really close
(of course in reality Smith should have won, not even a homer statement basically every fancy stat says it)

You'll be able to make a case very soon that Quick is the best ever American born goalie.

Loved his 1st exhibition game. Unbelievable vision, some good looks at the net and tough as nails.

Anyone see the hit on Zadina tonight?
For all the concussion talk lately there sure have been some dangerous hits this pre-season already. And yes I know this wasn't a head shot but it was still predatory.

Ridiculous hit for a prospect tournament.

The time between the puck leaving his stick and the hit is minuscule, and it looks clean. Guy who delivered the blow is trying to get noticed...mission accomplished.

He takes strides and starts behind him, not the type of hit that needs to be in the game. Standing someone up at the blueline that is not. Reminds me of the dumbass invitee that nearly shredded Janik's knee during the prospect camp.

He manages to get in front of him as well.. What would the rule be that eliminates that type of hit?

You get suspended for a long time if you hit a guy after he has gotten rid of the puck? Even if it is a short time ago. Then you must stop and think, and you can't do it at all.

The original purpose for hitting in hockey was to separate the player from the puck, there is little reason to hit someone who has already moved the puck other than an intent to hurt the player.

True, but hockey is a fast sport and you are on ice. These hits look worse when everyone looks at them in slow motion. I agree, they have to take away the bad hits, but common sense has to play into the decision as well. Every single time you step on the ice you risk a serious injury. What makes it even worse is when a player is hit goes down like a ton of bricks, squirms around like they were shot trying to draw a penalty.

Now I have tried stating I don't care anymore about Zadina. But just for those of you who do: try reading the GDT at the Wings-forum. Apparently, they are dragging themselves a bit down to earth: 'he is 18. He isn't used to play with or vs actually talented players. He needs time in the AHL.' It's things like that. Now, that's the last time I talk about Zadina, I promise and let's see what kind of awfully unreliable person I am... :naughty:

Hayton it is. And I still trust Chayka.

The hit in question serves zero purpose in the game of hockey when considering the purpose of hitting. There is no puck to seperate the player from. I would be perfectly fine with having all hitting that isn't a shoulder hitting a shoulder penalized, obviously hip checks are different. I doubt there is any real purpose in having a shoulder into a chest except to attempt to hurt your opponent. Take away those body armour shoulder pads would be a great start.

But hitting after the player moves the puck is intended to make the player 'rush' the play the next time as to avoid the contact that comes with having the puck. Remember the old "smeer the queer" games as a kid, you had those kids that once they got hit, they would only pick up the ball if they were all alone and would jetison the ball quickly when anyone approached them. Same in hockey, the intent is to make the other person rush and make mistakes. Hockey is a game of mistakes.
