It would if it were January 1st. I thought they chose September 15th so it wouldn’t. Also, what if Zadina started playing games at 5 but Hayton didn’t until 6? Still matter?
Minor hockey and Junior hockey start by birth year. The NHL draft is the only time that Sept 15 is the date that I know of. (Something to do with wanting kids to be over the age of 18 before they a full time pros)

I'm not referring to their youth hockey, I'm talking about there years playing elite hockey.

Bouchard has played 3 years in the OHL
Zadina has played Junior (Czech and Q) for 3 years
Hayton has played 2 years in the Soo.

By rights you could argue that you need to compare Hayton's D+1 to the other two's D years.

I’m good with this pick now that more information has been made available. Other than being just a good hockey player, Hayton is mature, professional and intelligent. That is extremely important when millions of dollars are invested in a player. Smart money doesn’t take on unnecessary risks. I wouldn’t either.

I thought Zadina’s comments about being passed on, etc were childish. Ya, he will mature, but that revealed his current character. That’s not something you say. These guys are prepped on how to speak... Zadina obviously marches to the beat of his own drum. 3 teams picking before us saw something they didn’t like.

Anyways, my gut tells me that Zadina didn’t want to go to the Coyotes. And he would have the balls to make that clear to us.
He wouldn’t have been the first one to not want to play here.
That is a reality we have to deal with because of our past reputation.
Hell, who would want to be drafted by one of the worst teams in the league? Financial issues? Possible relocation, etc?
I wish that information would surface one day so we can all put this “passing on Zadina”thing to bed.
These kids want to play in the NHL and I don't think where enters the picture. IF Zadina made such a statement I have not heard it. Zadina fell for a reason, maybe attitude, personality, position he plays, who knows, and I really don't care. I just want Hayton to prove the negative posters wrong.

You're just being silly by making this statement.

So you get a full bonus year of development and it only costs you 7months. Sounds like a bargain!

I’m pretty sure that Chayka’s draft style is equal part analytics and throwing spaghetti at the wall

Sure, it can be a bonus if you are desperate to get the player into your lineup quickly.

More strategically, you are dealing with guys on different trajectories. Often the younger player, who is performing close to the older player's level, will have a higher ceiling than the older player who has had an extra year to develop in JR Hockey.

The older player is closer to his ceiling, having had the extra year. The younger player has further to go to reach his ceiling because he's earlier on in his development path.

This is all assuming that the players have the maturity and determination to reach their ceiling. (crystal ball, anyone?)

Bottom line - we wanted Patrice Bergeron. Boston does not want to trade Patrice Bergeron. So we take the player who compares to Bergeron the most in the draft and is likely to develop into a similar player.

I would not be unhappy with getting the second coming of Bergeron. Provided that the four or five players taken behind him are not the second comings of Erik Karlsson, Patrick Kane, or Conor McDavid.

That isn't a given. I could just as easily say Zadina is likely to develop into a 40g scorer...just because I say it doesn't make it so. Hayton is a huge question mark...time will tell. Hopefully I'm wrong and Chayka is right.

Bergeron is my favorite non-Coyotes player, but it seems nearly every two-way C prospect nowadays slated to go in the first gets compared to Bergeron at some point

Furthermore, Bergeron's draft scouting reports back in 2003 generally highlighted his offensive skills and faceoff ability, not his defensive prowess or "completeness" as a player. He wasn't pegged to become a perennial Selke winner when he was drafted.

Oh, get over yourself Jake. I'm rooting for Hayton to succeed because another top draft pick failing to pan out would be disastrous for this team. Doesn't mean Chayka's decision to draft him is beyond reproach, nor does it mean Hayton should be exempt from the scrutiny that every other top pick goes through in their development.

Real life is not a video game or management sim, so who knows what will happen with Hayton. Sure, I'm nervous, because the last guy we picked because he played the game blindingly smartly enough to overcome our doubts about his other aptitudes is teetering on the edge of being a bust. But we won't know whether the kid is going to be a truly good or bad pick for another decade or so, so I'm not going to worry about it.

"Get over myself"? What are you talking about? Grow up.

Exactly. Life goes on. One player does not make a team.

Bergeron would be nice.

I'm expecting Dvorak production out of him. Not very high on him.
Well, then we are good. I think most on this board think highly of DVO. I'm with Feckless and will not lose any sleep over it. Hope for the best.

Who’s being negative about Hayton? This is an interesting pick. Very much against the norm. It’s interesting to discuss. It’s against conventional wisdom.
Do you like the pick or not? A yes or no question.

We'll know if he's on track by spring. It's really not that complicated. He has to pop in a major way. Getting a usable roster player isn't the objective when you are picking top 5.

There are about ten kids I’d have preferred but he seems like a fine prospect.

His production is not typical of his draft position and he’s a very unique selection in the top five from a historical perspective. It’s a noteworthy selection that begs further discussion. Which is what we’re doing.

It’s okay to have a discussion beyond complimenting the team and voicing support for everything they do. That’s what their website is for. People aren’t press releases.

That's an interesting observation, does anyone have the numbers of recent top five pick's D-1 to compare hayton to?

Still didn't answer my question, but that's fine. Picking top 5 should give us more than a fine prospect which Hayton may or may not be, but let's give the kid a chance before we start to throw rocks at him and Chayka.
