Would you rather have Zadina, yes or no?
No, which doesn't mean much as I don't follow these kids until they are drafted, but Zadina fell for a reason. If you would have said Tkachuk, I would have said yes.

Exactly. Life goes on. One player does not make a team.
One player certainly can make a team. Gretzky. Mario, Alex, Cindy. They all made their teams what they were. Generational players do that. The only reason why McDonald hasn't already made his team a perennial contender is, well, Edmonton.

I think Hayton needs a 90-100+ point season pace that can only be jeopardized in absolute numbers by a strong showing at WJC. If that occurs maybe Chayka and co are on to something.

If he makes the WJC team I will be impressed as well. That’s a tough team to make at 18.

Curious to see the sort of minutes he'll get in SSM if Frost is sent back to junior.

Totally disagree. Not one of those players did it by them self. Each had a very good supporting staff.

The Coyotes are a very good supporting staff. They would go far with just the addition of a Crosby, Ovi, or McDavid. Most teams outside the top 10 are very good supporting staff, lacking the one special player which would make the team great.

Not yet. Third from last place last year. We have a few nice pieces, but nothing more. None are a Messier, Kurri, Anderson, etc. yet. We are an unproved bunch.

I'm willing to see if Chayka and co's analysis has identified the next Bergeron. This was a huge statement pick. I can't emphasize it enough. The easy play was Zadina. Nobody would have questioned it. This is a bold move. It's a we are going all in on our philosophy on how to build a team. I may not agree with passing on a talent like Zadina but I'm willing to keep an open mind.

We have a few nice pieces, nothing more. But we should still consider this a major underachieving disaster if we don't arbitrarily make the playoffs anyway.

Let's see how it plays out before we declare disaster. There is potential for Chayka to have nailed this pick. Expectations need to be ugh though. Strong statistical start and making a WJC go a long way to provide reassurance.

Sorry. I should have gone blue there.

I'm okay with the Hayton pick. Not thrilled, but I was one of the few that didn't chuck a toaster in the draft chat.

I think that, by and large, there has to be one player, a Tom Brady, a Peyton Manning, Lawrence Taylor, LeBron James, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Sid, Mario, TGO, to make a championship team. That one player who lifts everyone around him to perform greater feats as he, himself performs great feats, is what makes a championship.

I rarely hear accolades about how the #7 hitter, the #2 starter, the second line center or first man off the bench carried his team to a championship.

Disagreeing with Jakey, I truly believe that while supporting staff are important, it's that star who drives a team to championship levels.

A HoF star helps for sure but 3 of the last 8 cups went to the Bruins and Kings who didn't have a player of that caliber.

Doughty will be in the HoF I think.

Kopitar has a shot as well. He's pretty comparable to players who made it like Modano and Sundin. He'll have to remain consistent though.

I agree. It's hard to win the SC, you need that right mix, and you need that star player or players to lead. What I was trying to say is that one star player won't bring you that cup. TGO had help, Mario had help, Kane had help, Sid had help etc. and lots of it. I think we kind of agree, but are saying it different.
