iirc Zadina was ranked 3oa by most publications and BT was 4oa

here's what we know

the first team up with an opportunity to pick Zadina went elsewhere

next team up with both available went BT

next team up with Zadina on the board went elsewhere

so notwithstanding what the publications felt, three teams had a crack at Zadina and went elsewhere

regardless of what happens years from now I don't think there is a basis for criticizing what the Sens did. We do redrafts all the time on these boards and they work out different than the draft order. that's life. but as things stand right now choosing BT 4oa isn't an out of left field choice.

personally I'd rather have the flashy goal scorer if he pans out but the BT types more often than not lead to winning programs

The latest examples of Tkachuk types are Crouse and Virtanen. That didn't really lead much winning for their clubs. The history of drafting powerforwards early in the draft is pretty ugly and rarely works out. Andrew Ladd would be one of the successful comparisons.

Better examples would be Matt Tkachuk and Alex Tuch. Going a little further back, Landeskog would be a decent comparable also.

I’m hoping he goes back to school, dominates and also destroys the world juniors. No need for him to go pro yet.
Man... he would crush at the WJC. Would be something to look forward to in a hockey year that isn't shaping up too well for us fans.

I always find it interesting to watch physical/large players make the transition to the NHL.

The physical attribute advantages they have in Junior disappear for a few years when they're going up against battle-hardened, more muscular, bigger and faster players.

Tkachuk and Brown will both be projects IMO - requiring a great deal of patience.

Brady Tkachuk to choose between Ottawa Senators and Boston University

Boston University coach Albie O’Connell said he and the school will support and respect whatever decision Tkachuk makes, but added there are clear benefits to returning for a second year of college hockey.
“I think it would be a great chance for him to continue to develop and be a big part of next year’s team,” O’Connell said. “The biggest improvement Brady made last season was his skating, and part of that was strength, and part of it was the fact he’s still growing. I think he grew an inch at BU last year. He’s a really talented player, but is still a little bit of a work in progress. He’s not completely fully physically developed so there’s a lot of gains that he can make [if he returns to school].”

Yeah Tuch is probably a good example. Tkachuk is more of a 10-20 pick talent like Tuch. Both guys will probably put up similar numbers with Tuch being the better goalscorer.

I still think it's criminal that we left Anze Kopitar on the table for Brian Lee.

It's rare where I outright want a player over another player on the actual day of the draft and the Senators fail to follow suit.

By and large, I've agreed with most of their drafting decisions (e.g. Zibanejad/Puempel/Ritchie) even when they haven't worked out, because that's the name of the game.

But when there is a situation where I think they've left legitimate talent on the table, and it's obvious to everyone, it's going to stick in my craw for awhile.

In a way, part of that is a credit to the Senators in that it's so rare. Compare that with teams like the Flames and Islanders who seemingly fail with all of their 1st round draft picks, year after year.

Brady's numbers have been consistently a year ahead of Tuch's in their development. They both put up similar numbers in their first year of NCAA hockey but Tuch was drafted before he played in the NCAA. Brady should top out higher than Tuch.

They both played their first year of college at 18.

I don't really think they're comparable besides being brothers. Matthew is a vastly superior offensive player and the numbers show that.

I am confused. How did you come to the conclusion that Brady is nothing like his brother Matthew due to putting up better numbers in a different league but at the same time say he is like Virtanen who also put up really good numbers in a different league?

You compare players against their peers. Brady's peers were drafted this year. Brady has an early birthday, not a late birthday.
He has a late birthday....that's not debatable. It isn't as simple a second that. Brady has a late birthday, Formenton is his peer, he's literally a few days older. You don't go by draft year, that's incredibly, incredibly flawed.

Same way that Groulx and Parent are Lavoie's peers, though Groulx has the closer relation being born in the same birth year, even though Parent and Lavoie are both 2019 draftees.

Justt for clarifications sake, who would be Henrik Borgstrom and Tanner Pearson's peers?

What's confusing? Matthew put up about 2 PPG in his draft year, Virtanen 1 PPG, Crouse just sub PPG. Matthew was legitimately one of the best players in the CHL in his rookie/draft year. You cant really say that about the other two. They're not really comparable imo. Tuch and Brady are more comparable to the other two than Matthew, who's on another level and has proven that thus far in the NHL.

ya that one really grates on me

I have said on this board that the one thing cup winners have in common is 2 or more HoF calibre players on their rosters in their prime

with Alfie's wind down and EK's emergence spanning Kopitar's career that needed element would have been there.

Would we have won in 07 with Kopitar on the roster? in 16?

idk but it's entirely feasible that that mistake cost us one or more cups.

Matt Tkachuk got to play with Dvorak and Marner which formed one of the more dominant lines in recent CHL memory on the most storied franchise in the OHL. Brady didn't even play with a legit C at BU and played against older competition. Trying to compare offensive stats from NCAA vs CHL is bound for failure.

Disagree cause you are looking just at numbers but in terms of play Matthew and Brady are definitely comparable more so than Virtanen and Crouse. You are also comparing different leagues and linemates which moves the needle by a lot...where Brady didn't have a true center. The same arguments could have been made for Mittelstad who by the numbers looked just okay but play him with players who are at his level like him and Tkachuk at the WJC and you see their potential come out.

Like you said, M Tkachuk was dominant. That's the big difference here. All those other guys were far from dominant in their draft years, they were just very good. Brady wasn't truly dominant in his first NCAA season ( 18 yo) like a Keller or Eichel.
