I wouldn't want them to have to score 20, but I would want them to take a regular shift. They need to take 10-12 minutes a night without their shifts being white knucklers hoping they don't get routinely burned. If they can PK then all the better.

Thats the problem though, people would have this stance while trotting out Jacob de la rose,, Emmerton or whoever... despite those guys leaving you white knuckling without providing much of anything.

Like people this year saying Kostin isnt good enough at hockey, despite the fact that he had very good analytics and played well. If you can fight, half the people on ths board dont hold you to the same standard of other players

The trade of.Andrew Gibson made me curious about Cleveland. Disappointing (but understandable) that he was not invited to USA Hockey's summer showcase following his freshman season at Wisconsin.

Will be interesting to see how things go for him at Colorado College.

Clearly he could have benefited from a year of.junior hockey before joining the Badgers.

But the competition level in the NCHC and a year of physical maturity and perhaps an opportunity to see more ice time could help him reach the potential Detroit scouts envisioned.

Brady should have spent another year in junior.* He went to Wisconsin to play for Granato and his asst, who were near immediately canned. He, and two others are now transferred.

* Very few 18 year olds play in the NCAA,.

Adultish NCAA hockey players - a problem?

NCAA hockey has evolved tremendously over the past 20-30 years. The path for most college players now seems to be Junior A/B hockey, with many, many players playing Junior A until their eligibility runs out at age 20. Very few players go from a high school program directly into college.
This has led to significant age creep in NCAA players. There are currently only 36 NCAA players out of 3,875 who are 17 or 18 years old - the age when most students enter college, give or take. There are 106 who are 19 and 380 who are 20. Most players are 21 (945), 22 (936) and 23 (850). There are 507 players who are 24, 114 who are 25, and 1 who is 26 years old!
So it appears as though NCAA hockey players, on average, are about 4 years older than typical college students.

I'm guessing a lot of them are USHL or junior B players, like Hirose.

Still, it's disappointing for a second round pick to get healthy scratched and put up zero offense when he did get a chance to play. Didn't like the pick and still don't.

While I agree on the healthy scratch, he has never (and will never) put up points. What I don't like is this first step, because it indicates he is getting bad counsel. Everyone knew Granato was on his way out, but he signed anyway. Further, Hirose types at 22 are still a challenge for most 18 year-olds. He should have stuck in juniors. A tough course correct for a guy who needs every eligible game he can get to develop.

As for the pick, I have no idea why they drafted him at 47, when all indicators lead one to believe he would have been available at 147.

Yeah, at 147 this thread would have died pretty quick. This draft he waited until 144 to pick Whipple.

I don't think we're the only ones who've noticed Draper's picks (especially 2nd rounders) are putting up really low point numbers.

BC has played in every game for Colorado College, is a +3, has 1 point, they are 9-2 and ranked #8.

I know, for some, the eulogy has been written, the grave dug and the head stone ordered but I still see this guy in Detroit. That move to Wisconsin was ill advised and he can ill afford a year's worth of development being only in practice, but that is behind him. He'll likely need all 3 years at CC and whatever remains as waiver exempt, contract, whatever in GR.

“Cleveland shows as a bit of a solid but unspectacular defenseman who didn’t stand out in a positive or negative manner in this one. He saw very limited ice time as the team’s seventh defenseman, but still remained effective when hopping over the boards.”

“He’s a huge, long, mean, tough, and physical defenseman. He’s going to play in the NHL as a match, shut down that kills penalties and impacts games with his physicality and defending. He won’t be a guy that scores or points but he’s going to be a really valuable player in the NHL and will make highlights with his hitting.”

To use the famed language of former General Manager Dean Lombardi, Cleveland “checks a lot of boxes.” He plays left defense, has size, plays with grit, and provides a steadying presence on the blueline. While comparisons always need to be careful, it’s safe to consider roles a person is projected to play. In Cleveland’s case, there’s the potential he could grow into a left-handed version of Matt Greene.

While I'm a Brady supporter and am not overly concerned about his offense (there are plenty of defensive defenseman who only luck into points with cheap secondary assists and pucks bouncing off skates), our boy most certainly does not have 7 points this year.

I could only wish Chiarot just played defense and not to carry the puck, or try to be offensive

Those secondary assists is an indication of being able to move the puck and pass. You know, skills a player needs to make the NHL. He needs to be putting up some points playing at a lower level, even the aforementioned Matt Greene put up 17 points in 40 games his D+2 season in college.

So full disclosure: I know literally nothing about this prospect nor have I ever seen him play, and only know anything about based upon a quick scan of this thread

Looking at this kid, he's basically projected a 6'5+ 200+, 19yo Stay-At-Home with a nasty physical streak and likes to hit? So this is is a guy who should be what when he's 25? 230? And it sounds like he's a pretty good skater? Was part of the USNDP...which obviously he was chosen because of his defense and not that miserable point production...so his D must be pretty good?

This is not good...because why? Do we not want a giant, physical, stay-at-home?

Ever since it was pointed out that he just does not think the game well, I see it on near every shift.

Can we agree that his D+1 year was waste and this is his actual D+1? < He should have stayed in juniors for another year. I posted this up further ni the thread but less than 40 18 year olds play in the NCAA. He really doesn't have the skill set to be that exception. It was poor advise.

IF we can agree on that Matt had 4 points in his D+1.

Because he has the puck handling of a goaltender. That's not going to cut it in the modern NHL. He'd fit right in to Lalonde's chip it out strategy... but that's not a winning strategy.

Got it, so he can't carry a puck. Is his passing equally as bad? Is it a lack of skill or acumen?

He may as well be using a goalie stick or no stick at all. He's a big body that hustles but that alone can only get you so far. Someone above posted Matt Greene in an attempt to raise hope for Brady but 1. Greene outproduced him at almost triple the rate in his draft year and 2. that was in 2002 when scoring was at almost half of what it is now for top end kids in Junior leagues and/or college.

What about Oleksiak? Hes huge and a stay at home and provides zero offense contribution. I remember him as a junior and he didn’t do anything offensively either? Or is Cleveland much like the real Cleveland - sad and broken beyond repair?

Who are we talking as a comp here? Gudas? Schenn? There aren’t many examples of that type in the NHL. Is it because they’re unicorns or is it that most guys that play this style just don’t make it in the bigs? I guess we’ll find out in a couple years.

Oleksiak had 13 points in the NCAA the season before he was drafted.

People underestimate the offense of "no-offense" NHLers prior to getting to the show. To have a guy putting up goalie numbers in Juniors as a skater is hard to overcome as it shows a complete lack of any puck moving ability. Again, Gudas mentioned just above, 37 points his draft year.

If on were listening to the actions of the Wings management team for the past 25 years, the answer is yes, we do not want a giant, physical, stay-at-home defensemen.

Some of us fans, disagree. If he is in the corner, he can impact the dump and chase game. He can impact the pressure the D or forwards game. The big question is does he have the feet and stick skills (first pass) to play as you state. Some on here think he would be available in the 6th round, but that isn't where he was ranked. I don't know if he lasts until the 4th or 5th round, but the scouting reports I read didn't have him over 100. Yet, none of that matters today. He was drafted for the exact role you present. If that is 9-11 minutes a game on the PK and against the 4th line and keeping the flies off, it will have been a good pick.
