The weird part about Hale:

This is the list of 18 year old D+1 prospect drafted in the 1st round out of the USHL from these dates:

View attachment 733795

Yes. Just Hale*. So, that’s weird. He ended up being a defensive depth piece, like most of the guys drafted at 18 out of the USHL who work out.

As a reminder, David Hale was drafted out of the Sioux City Musketeers and went to the U of North Dakota.
2000 NJD 1st Rd #22
Jun 18, 1981 (age 18)
5 years 102 AHL GP
7 years 327 NHL GP

Hale's not D+1; NCAA players were drafted at age 19 pre-2005, for what reason, I cannot say. That said, your point about him still being in the USHL is valid - he was young for his draft year but that is somewhat strange as much of his cohort would've been in the NCAA already.

Yes, my point was we drafted a guy who was still playing in the USHL at 18 in the 1st round.

I limited it to D+1 because if I didn’t I would get late birthdays. If I didn’t:

Keith Ballard (2002 BUF 1st Rd #11) was drafted at 19 out of Minnesota. Birthday: Nov 26, 1982

John Moore (2009 CBJ 1st Rd #21) was drafted at 18 out of the USHL. Birthday: Nov 19, 1990
Moore was the 2nd in points (39) and PPG (0.68) among defensemen in the USHL. Tory Krug was 1st and went undrafted because teams were real size queens at the time.

Jordan Schmaltz (2012 STL 1st #25) was also drafted out of the USHL at 18. Birthday: Oct 8, 1993
Schmaltz was the 2nd highest in PPG (0.75) and 2nd in points (41).

Hale was 15th in points (24) and 18th in PPG (0.44) in 1999-00. That’s real underwhelming for a first rounder. And underwhelm is what Hale did.

He’s not our worst pick ever.

My fave bad pick might be Anton Kadeykin.

His D+2 season in the OHL:
40 GP 0G 2A 2 points 38 PIM

The least productive D+2 season ever?

Larry Shapley was Vancouver’s 1997 6th Rd #148 pick and face puncher.
Scott Todd was Nashville’s 2005 7th Rd #213 pick and face puncher.

BTW, Sean McMorrow, the Sabre’s 2000 8th Rd #258 pick played 1 NHL game, as well as 245 AHL games. He also was a face puncher. 3rd in PIM in the AHL (315) the season he got his 1 NHL game.

How about if we limit it to 2nd round picks?

Listed at draft (this is more like a NBA draft):
Kadeykin (2002 NJD 2nd #51) 6’2” 180
Linnik (1998 STL 2nd #41) 6’3” 182
Forbes (1998 PHI 2nd Rd #51) 6’6” 185
Pasma (1990 WSH 2nd Rd #30) 6’4” 207
Ustrnul (2000 ATL 2nd Rd #42) 6’5” 235
Van Hoof (1999 PIT 2nd Rd #57) 6’2” 200
Grushnikov (2021 DAL 2nd #48) 6’2” 198
Moro (1995 OTT 2nd Rd #27) 6’1” 220
(30 NHL GP, 489 AHL GP)
Roger (2021 OTT 2nd Rd #49) 6’4” 200
Carkner (1999 MTL 2nd Rd #58) 6’4” 238
(237 NHL GP, 587 AHL GP)

Kadeykin is the smallest guy on the list, we didn’t even get freakish size lol.

We had 5 picks in the first two rounds of the 2000 draft and the best player we got by a landslide was Paul Martin. I know it's irrelevant to rehash it time and time again but there were a TON of just total loss type of drafts in the 2000s.

Go look at that 2000 draft...it wasn't very good. You literally can make the argument that Paul Martin was the best player in that draft from the bottom of the 1st round through the next 3 or 4 rounds. Paul Martin was 13th in games played from the 2000 draft and besides Vermett, Moen, Lundqvist there wasn't a whole helluva lot to choose from. Even that isn't much.

I mean if you get one of the two or three best players from #22 to #204 what more can you do? You can't get what's not there

This thread just keeps on delivering. Looks like we are into the 2000 draft review!

Waiting on LOTR prequel suggestions or perhaps we can tackle the controversial subject of Apartment Therapy and the growing trend of net zero operations.
What is Apartment Therapy?

But going back to 2000 even worse than the Stevens -Hale comparisons were the DiMarchi - Daneyko comparisons.

You seem to only be contained to this thread.

Hop on over to the Filmon thread where the last 5 pages don't even mention his name but rather go into the benefits of intermittent fasting and peanut butter.

I'm a fan of peanut butter. Especially the all natural kind.

I love all nuts and seeds. Sesame too.
I can live on sunflower seeds.

Sunflower seeds are an awesome snack. Don’t know if you’ve had cracked pepper sunflower seeds but they’re awesome!

Peanut paste! No sugar, different cooking method, absolutely different influence on health. But don`t use it with problems of liver.
Cashews walnuts and pecans are the best nuts. Almonds have great flavor but they’re hard as rocks and annoying to eat. Pistachios are also great but too expensive.
Pecan is the best nut without any competition.

Hale's not D+1; NCAA players were drafted at age 19 pre-2005, for what reason, I cannot say. That said, your point about him still being in the USHL is valid - he was young for his draft year but that is somewhat strange as much of his cohort would've been in the NCAA already.

NCAA had an arbitrary rule in place for players to be drafted and still be "amateurs." Funniest case might have been Rick DiPietro who was supposed to be in the 2001 Draft, but his advisor(s) were worried that he might be the third goalie taken behind Dan Blackburn and Pascal Leclaire. Back in those days there was a rookie salary cap but it wasn't as stringent as it would be post-2005. So there was more financial incentive to go top 5 rather than be in the mid-first round.

DiPietro's people kicked the tires and it seemed like he'd go top 5 if he were to enter 2000 but at the cost of his NCAA eligibility. DiPietro declared so late that he wasn't included among Central Scouting's list of top North American goaltenders. Islanders won the lottery a month later and simultaneously got new owners. One of them in particular seemed to take a ton of pride in taking a goalie first since nobody had done it before. Several years later, he'd be in prison.

Minnesota had DiPietro 3rd on their list but happily took Marian Gaborik who they had #1. Columbus had DiPietro 4th (and they would take Leclaire in the first a year later).

Funny to think if they hadn't won the lottery, they might have been defaulted into keeping Roberto Luongo. Or if DiPietro decided to stay in school, they would have had Gaborik-Jokinen-Luongo instead of Parrish-Kvasha-DiPietro.

I recently bought the THN 2000 Draft preview on eBay. I had fond memories of having the cover posted on my dorm room wall. I'm definitely ready to rehash!

I thought maybe that 2000 THN issue was the one I have which proclaims ''DiPietro is the best goalie drafted since Brodeur'', but this issue seems to be pre-draft, which DiPietro had not yet been drafted at the time this was released.

I've long since laughed at ''DiPietro is the best goalie drafted since Brodeur'' but looking back on it, it probably wasn't some out there proclamation, as DiPietro was only drafted 10 years after Brodeur, and was the first ever goalie taken at 1st overall.

Funny enough, the best goalie drafted since Brodeur actually WAS taken in that 2000 draft (unless it was Luongo 3 years earlier in 97) and that was Henrik Lundqvist, who not too many people outside of Sweden had probably even heard of at the time.

Everything I remember was that scouts said DiPietro was the best puckhandling goalie since Brodeur. It was muddled where DiPietro stood compared to Blackburn/Leclaire, so I don't remember people saying DiPietro was best goalie prospect.

Also Paul Martin's picture from the THN issue is priceless:
