Wheeler on Casey:

4. Seamus Casey, RHD, 18 (University of Michigan)

Casey, the 27th-ranked prospect on my 2022 draft board, had a bit of an up-and-down draft season, with a strong start and finish briefly overcast by some struggles in the middle which prompted some scouts to question his top-two rounds merits and his decision-making. I really liked the Devils taking a swing on him in the second round though and he has sure looked like a top two-round guy throughout his strong freshman year at Michigan, where he has shone as a real catalyst from the backend with the puck and in distribution.

I really like a lot of his tools in isolation. When he’s on, there’s an unmistakable flow to his game where the puck just moves through him to its next destination within the pace of play, whether that’s a heady outlet out of a D-to-D pass or a quick carry into a cross-ice pass to allow his teammates to get open for him. Inside the offensive zone, he can make things happen with his blend of mobility and handling (he walks the line effortlessly but he also handles the puck like a forward one-on-one). Inside the defensive zone, he thrives escaping past pressure.

He looks effortless out there at times, weaving in and out of coverage, and mixing in delays and fakes with the puck to create space for himself or take it from others. He’s a fabulous puck transporter through neutral ice and a tactile player inside the offensive zone, where his footwork shines through. He’s undersized, but his feet and stick help compensate and he has made his fair share off tops this year. He can also comfortably play his off side (the left side), providing added versatility. I expect him to get signed out of college as a top junior or senior in the country. If things break right, he’s got top-six, PP2 potential with the right coach and belief from the Devils.

Nice play by him. I hope we don't lose him via trade. Luke , Nemec and Casey all on the bug club with a combo of some shutdown guys like Marino , Siegenthaler and Bahl is a dynamite defense if they all pan out.

He's gonna make the NHL and I thikn he's gonna play forward at least 10% of games. Love this prospect, and love the idea of him as a depth F/D at least initially. If he's more than that and becomes a top 4 mainstay I'll be thrilled but I think that's a reasonable expectation for him.

Glad this kid has NJD ties, makes me less anxious about him going the FA route lol. With Luke coming soon, I can’t wait to see Seamus join him.

5'7 defenseman

I like Lane Hutson also (smaller guy), but a reason why Luke is ranked higher than him almost everywhere is because of his size. I also prefer Luke’s skating to Hutson’s, but his good size will help so much at the next level.

He has all that skill and smoothness while being a 6’2 D-man. It’s impressive and certainly a plus. I hate the “size and grit” talk but it certainly helps, especially for offensive D-men these days who carry play.
