I wonder what game it was in 2019. Could it have been canes and caps game 7? That would be pretty neat

It was the Bruins-Blue Jackets Game 5, though the numbers are misleading. It aired immediately after a very controversial Kentucky Derby, and somehow wires got crossed at NBC. After the Derby, only the Boston and Columbus area was supposed to be sent directly to the hockey game, while the rest of the viewing audience stayed with post race coverage. Instead, only Boston and Columbus got post race coverage while everyone else was sent to the game.

As fun as the international psychodrama spilling over into hockey is, can somebody explain why there is this big, lengthy international hockey tournament literally the year before this process is repeated in the Olympics? Is there some connection to it, like the seeding of teams? Or did everyone just decide there needed to be additional opportunities to injure star players shortly before the playoffs begin?

Vegas...how else will they get cap space before TDL without having the "injury" spill over into playoffs?

Two reasons:

1. Everyone is sick of the ASG. The fans have kind of soured on it, the players frequently skip it, the NHL needed something new to bring excitement back to the league.

2. The Olympics are run by the IIHF, not the NHL. The NHL gets nothing from allowing players to play in the Olympics. They actually lose money for those weeks. So this is the NHL's way of having an international tournament, as well as sending a message to the IIHF that they may not be needed in the future.

Also, extra bonus reason: This tournament is played under NHL rules, and thus, allows things that the IIHF wouldn't. If an Olympic game started with 3 fights in under a minute, every one of those players would have been kicked out of that game, and probably would have been suspended for the following one.

I daresay the NHL had benefited tremendously as the advertising of their product goes. And, I would hazard to guess that didn't come entirely as a surprise to their marketing people.

Probably the only reason I'm glad that the NHL isn't with NBC instead of ESPN anymore. I still remember them preemptively cutting away from OT in the f***ing Eastern Conference Final in an elimination game for not just the race but hours of pre-race fluff for the Preakness.

Well, laid out like that it sure seems to make a lot more sense. So this is a replacement for the ASG- does that mean it is going to be a yearly thing?

I think the plan will be a 4 year rotation:

Winter olympics
Asg
World Cup (nhl sponsored tournament)
Asg

Maybe they go 4 nations in between instead, but i think this is their current plan. Every other year for best on best international seems frequent enough. Same with all star games.

Sabres vs Senators right? And it got moved to Versus although I think the Buffalo market wasn't affected.

It was going to be the same thing the year before with our series vs Sabres, but whatever game that was didn't have OT.

That game 7 was on the cable network but IIRC it was the highest rated first round game in like 10 years.

yep, that's the one. It's come up a couple times since then as well but the games never went to OT IIRC

To be fair, Jarvis hasn't had the kind of impact I would have expected of him. But he's not the only one. Marchand has also been invisible. Reinhart is getting more minutes than both of them and is struggling just as much
