Not so hot take but Shesty is the 3rd best goalie in the league and is significantly better than Lundqvist was through 50 NHL games

I was harder on Hank than most and I love Shesty (partially because we share a name) but I don't believe the stats bare that out. I looked last year. Hank was worse to start his sophomore year than Shesty ever was but overall his stats were better this early.

just stats

IGOR 49gp / 27w / 2.57 / .921
HANK 53gp / 30w / 2.24 / .922

About the same, slight edge to Henrik, IMO. Hanks first 50 (basically his first season) was something special.

Correct me if I’m wrong…but wasn’t there a stat or something that showed Shesty with the edge in terms of higher amount of danger shots? In other words, Shesty is getting murdered with higher amount of chances against than Hank.

MAaaaaaaaaybe give Georgie the day game
I know this place will go into full meltdown mode every time Georgiev starts but the reality is, Shesty will start 55-60 if healthy. So Georgiev will
be starting once every few games.

If we've won a few it'll be "but we can't break the streak", if we lose a couple it'll be "but we can't afford a loss". They need to slot Georgiev in against weaker opponents.

If you believe MSG’s shot recording (there’s legitimate reasons not to), I’m not sure there’s a goalie that’s ever been abused more than Hank throughout his career. There’s a good chance that MSG’s shots are not recorded well and that leads to a lot of the noise when trying to determine the scoring chances/GSAA statistics.

Igor does have essentially the same SV% while allowing an extra goal every 4 games compared to Hank, so he’s definitely getting peppered quite a bit.

Fair point, like I said the only knocks against young Lundqvist were his slow starts and tendency to give up awfully soft goals at the worst possible times, but since that didn't happen until years 2-4 ish, I guess is irrelevant in a discussion of the first 50 games.

If I'm being honest the Rangers didn't look great today and from what it sounds like didn't look great the first three games (I only saw a little of the Stars game). That said the 11-12 Rangers started mediocre (remember that Vancouver game it was like today's game), the 13-14 Rangers started horribly, and the 14-15 Rangers were a .500 team in December. I like football more, but it's a 17 game season, we're privileged that this sport is 82 and allows for slow starts.

maybe, but the eye/memory test tells me otherwise. that first years team was crap aside from Jagr. Our top pair was Malik and Rosy, not a Norris winner and Lindgren.

@Machinehead or other analytics gurus, curious with Hunt's and Reaves' advanced stats. They and Rooney got the least TOI but I think Hunt was especially good in the numbers.
I really don't care what the stats say but Hunt in an AHL level player on a decent team. Sure the occasional start against a heavy team is fine but reminds me of Howden with the Puck on his stick.
Maybe he's really good defensively?

Also was fun to watch K'Andre fly up the ice in ot. I thought he held his own tonight against some very high end offensive talent.

There's no need to throw mud at Georgiev here, who also has dominated the Leafs in their own building in the past.

That said - thank you Igor. This win is ALL on you, we never should have made it to overtime.

Howden could never do puck retrieval on a zone entry like Hunt has already shown in a couple of games. There was a play late in the third, Hunt went in first and pivoted/spun left then right (or vice versa) to protect/win the puck from the defender and moved it to Reaves that got a cycle started. I notice him with Reaves winning their zone entries more than they do not.

That OT was one of the craziest I've seen.

That OT at one point with Igor reminded me of havin a brew with your buddies before heading out for a night on the town - so you fire up NHL 94 on Sega. During the game you go to bring up a player to grab a loose puck only to realize you had control of the goalie the whole time...here you are up by the blue line, flopping around making saves...yeah...showing my age. lol

Man, we did that every Friday & Saturday night with a few beers before heading out on the town. I still have nightmare about the Bruins. Oates, Juneau & Neely.

The fact that we are getting wins while still get used to the new coach is very reassuring. Most people won’t like these games because they aren’t flashy. But where has flashy gotten us the past 3+ years? Hopefully we can get healthy again and start going to that high quality forecheck game from all 4 lines.

Also Igor is a mythical creature at this point lolz

Kakko and Laf not being able to mesh with those two married pairs in the top two lines is really making line combinations difficult. Kreider getting 3 goals in 4 games really shuts down the possibility of him slotting down. Kakko with Blais, Chytil in the middle, might be a possibility for some chemistry there. Might try Goodrow with Strome and Panarin. This isn't new, trying to get some board and puck battlers blended with the finesse guys. What we used to have but are not getting anymore consistently is that 2-man aggressive forecheck. Panarin-Strome don't do it. Blackwell tried but required Strome to support him, and that happened just occasionally. Kreider and Zib aren't much better, still needing that wrecking ball guy to go in deep and muck it first for them. Kreider will glide in, looking for the hit on the dman to separate the puck, than moving his feet to be first to the puck. Oftentimes he's merely late on the play and lets the dman fly up ice and by him.

He gets to the puck with decent speed but once he gets it nothing happens but I guess for a 4th liner I can live with him. I just think we should have some better options especially on the 2nd pp unit.
Eventually even as decent as the 4th line has looked they are gonna have to manufacture some goals here and there.

I agree. He's not going to create much offense by all indications. But him and Reaves have been good at puck retrieval and getting offensive zone time started. Just keep doing that, working the puck deep and back to the point for a point SOG and try to jam and crash for garbage goals, is all we can expect.
