For older fans like me, with memories going back to the Original Six, Emrick is a real treat.
Back then, there was very little hockey on TV or the radio. At night, if the atmospheric conditions were right, I could sometimes pick up radio broadcasts from Toronto and Montreal (I lived in the Bronx). So I got to listen to some of the classic hockey announcers of those days, Foster Hewitt in Toronto and Danny Gallivan in Montreal. They had a particular cadence to their announcing.
Emrick, who is about 14 months older than me, obviously listened to them too and I often can hear echoes of Hewitt and Gallivan in his announcing. It just sounds right to me. Sam Rosen is a different kind of announcer: you hear the streets of NYC in his voice. Although I've heard all the great Ranger announcers over the years: Marv Albert on radio in the early 60s, Win Elliot, and Jim Gordon (who was great), it is Sam's voice that I hear in my head when I think of the Rangers. In the middle of July and August, it is his voice that I crave hearing.
Eddie O. I can live without. One of my complaints with the national broadcasts from MSG is how they turn down the crowd mikes. You loose some of the feel for how passionate the Garden crowd is and lose some of the emotion of the game. I hate how they lower the volume on the goal song.
Although I like Emrick a lot, I wish we could keep Sam and JM for however long we stay in the playoffs. One of the great things about 1994 was having Sam and JD broadcasting Game 7 vs. the Canucks and listening to how ecstatic they were at the end. They captured what all us long suffering fans were feeling.
But, Emrick, he's fine in my book.
