I think its an absolute travesty that the NHl not only takes the games away from networks after round one, but have a miserable duo of Emrick-Olczyk as their lead team.

Doc Emrick replaced Gary Thorne as Devils play by play on Sportschannel only because Thorne quit to be the national announcer for ESPN.

When Fox took some national games from ABC/ESPN, they were scraping the bottom of the barrell for a dedicated national voice. They couldnt find one, so they asked guys like Emrick, Rosen, Jeanerette etc to volunteer for Sunday broadcasts -- usually if their organic team was on the slate.

The idea that Emrick is the best is garbage. Thorne and Clement held the highest honor for over a decade, and when ESPN dropped hockey to NBC/OLN, Thorne was already committed to baseball.

What options for a national voice were out there?

Not much. They tried Cuthbert on NBC, but he was loyal to TSN. Strader's great but he wasnt offered. Bennenati is horrid. Rosen has contractual obligations with Fox and the NFL. Pat Foley and Randy Hahn are massive homers.

So they came up with this horrid team of Olczyk and Emrick. Emrick got the job because of seniority. In 1998 he was doing women's olympic hockey. ESPN never wanted Emrick tyo do their national broadcasts once they took the contract in 1992.

Olczyk is just garbage. Great player back in the day, but just a terrible color man.

The NHL needs to do away with Doc. Enough already. The botched Kane goal should have been a sign. Either promote Strader or steal somebody from TSN, Rogers or CBC.
Emerick is the best in the business, hands-down.

Brooks picked the Rangers to lose in the East finals to Ottawa. Rangers beat the Caps and then TO. Ottawa beats MTL and Pitt.

The EA simulation has the Rangers beating the Caps in 7. Pitt in 7. Sweeping MTL. 6 games over the Hawks. Richards wins his 2nd Conn Smythe. Nash has 14 goals in 24 playoff games.

I can live with Emrick, but Edzo sucks.

You guys have no idea how much it sucks for me, though...I have to watch the games on Comcast Sports Net with Joe B and Locker. If I don't post for a few days you can assume I died of some sort of serious bleeding from the ear.

Damn. I legitimately feel bad for you.

Every Ranger game they do together, they will talk about 94 and Doc will say you were on that team Edzo, and Edzo says that was along time ago and changes the subject...but I do have to thank him for bringing the Cup to Belmont Racetrack, so my son and I could take a picture with it....,

Hey, destroy Washington for me, would you?
Thanks and good luck fellas. I'll be watching every game.

Still not as bad as ROOT with the Pens homer twins. :p:

My favorite one.

IT WOULD NOT GOOOOOOOOOO

I remember running the Doc Emrick drinking game last year... We all added rules, although we didn't have a flashy graphic.

Stresssssssssinnnnnnn' we need a counselling/therapy/stress management thread. Can a certified psychologist please identity him or her self?

Emrick and Olczyk are a very good pair. I enjoy listening to them. We all love Sam, as his voice oozes Ranger hockey history of the last ~30 years, but Emrick is an outstanding announcer.

We're all just going to have to get used to not having the 'Dolan' experience of the 'Canon goal cam', and seeing ads on the glass behind the nets during the game.

And...this is a biggie...we're just going to have to figure out for ourselves when we are getting close to the 'Foxwoods Final Five'. It's not going to be easy...

Gary Thorne and Bill Clement. Dave Strader and Darren Pang. Hell, even Steve Levy and Barry Melrose. I loved those tandems back in the day. And then you had the idiot Buccigross on NHL Tonight.

I don't know if any of you guys know Craig Laughlin, the Caps' color guy. He's a really nice guy in real life, a cool dude. In the booth, though, he and Joe B form an absolutely terrible pair. Talk about homers. And Locker sounds like he had a stroke, the way he talks. He didn't, it's just his speech is so slow and drawn out with that Canadian drawl.

When the Caps score, it's simply awful. You have to listen to Joe B screaming at the top of his lungs, and the background from the arena itself which sounds like a ****ing firetruck crashed into the stands.

In the past, I've used the pause function on the DVR to sync up a radio feed of the game. Listening to Kenny and Dave while watching the game on TV is actually a really cool experience. I'll be doing that this year as much as I can.

Wtf?

I feel your pain brother. Just remember you are not alone down here in enemy territory.

I actually kind of like Doc. He always sounds excited no matter which team scores. I appreciate that. And I like his creative use of words.

That being said, I miss the days of Gary Thorne and Bill Clement. They were my favorite duo. Maybe it's nostalgia. Who knows. I have childhood memories of playing The EA sports NHL games on my SNES and those two doing the commentary. Sigh.

“@KatieStrangESPN: #NYR No Clowe or Boyle on the ice. Staal and Dorsett continue to practice, the latter in a yellow non-contact jersey”

Doc is fine. I wasn't so thrilled when we were playing the Devils in the ECF, but any other team and I'm fine to have him call it.

Having gotten too sample a lot of the commentary teams around the league this season, 80% of them are horrid.

Thank you for being the first person on this page to start a conversation that doesn't involve an experts opinion, but actually involves facts that can contribute to the Rangers postseason.
