I think its an absolute travesty that the NHl not only takes the games away from networks after round one, but have a miserable duo of Emrick-Olczyk as their lead team.
Doc Emrick replaced Gary Thorne as Devils play by play on Sportschannel only because Thorne quit to be the national announcer for ESPN.
When Fox took some national games from ABC/ESPN, they were scraping the bottom of the barrell for a dedicated national voice. They couldnt find one, so they asked guys like Emrick, Rosen, Jeanerette etc to volunteer for Sunday broadcasts -- usually if their organic team was on the slate.
The idea that Emrick is the best is garbage. Thorne and Clement held the highest honor for over a decade, and when ESPN dropped hockey to NBC/OLN, Thorne was already committed to baseball.
What options for a national voice were out there?
Not much. They tried Cuthbert on NBC, but he was loyal to TSN. Strader's great but he wasnt offered. Bennenati is horrid. Rosen has contractual obligations with Fox and the NFL. Pat Foley and Randy Hahn are massive homers.
So they came up with this horrid team of Olczyk and Emrick. Emrick got the job because of seniority. In 1998 he was doing women's olympic hockey. ESPN never wanted Emrick tyo do their national broadcasts once they took the contract in 1992.
Olczyk is just garbage. Great player back in the day, but just a terrible color man.
The NHL needs to do away with Doc. Enough already. The botched Kane goal should have been a sign. Either promote Strader or steal somebody from TSN, Rogers or CBC.
