In order to make trouba palatable you have to have the rangers eat at least 1/4th of his salary, and you have to jettison the bad defenseman already on this team. He would have to be played as a bottom pair defenseman and then honestly it wouldn’t be so bad. But Chiarot, Petry and one of holl or Gus would need to be gone. You can’t add trouba and keep all of those bums. That’s just too many bad, aging players. If we were able to get rid of Chiarot for trouba for next year I’d do that in a heartbeat though.

We're just digging a deeper hole.
How?

Troubas contract is in its last year. Holls has 2 years remaining. Next year asp will be up and Petry will be off the roster.

Then depending on play Steve can decide whether or not to resign trouba at say 3m for 2 years.

I won't t be upset if we don't land Trouba but I see no harm in shuffling the deck chairs here. If we can swap Petry, Gustafsson or Holl for Trouba Id say go for it.

I wouldn't expect Trouba to be a needle mover - more change for the sake of change. Still, I think this team could use a shake up of its own.

Trouba with retention for Gus/Holl. A sweetner coming back would be nice but I don't think we need to be greedy here. Call it a "hockey trade."

Columbus seems more likely as they don't need to balance any cap space but Id be pretty happy if Yzerman could swing a move. Id probably be okay adding a late pick to get it done.

Cap dumping Chiarot and then trading holl for trouba retained would instantly greatly improve our team. We really should be preparing this team for next year if we can. This year is a lost cause. Get trouba, off load what we can from the bottom 4 defenseman we have this year and prepare for new guys plus youth next year. One of wallinder or ASP will be on the team next year. Maybe even both.

No hes signed for next year too. Barf. Adding more slow, overpriced D-men is just digging a deeper hole.

All it does is move us into a worse draft pick. Nobody believes that Trouba (the completely unlikeable guy the Rangers have been trying to get rid of for years) is going to take us from where we are now to into the playoffs so why bother?

Chiarot is already a gaping hole on LD.

I'm just not interested in adding to our problems. We have 5 terrible defenseman. We don't need to add a defenseman trending from bad to terrible. If we can subtract one of the problems (Chiarot) while replacing them with a lesser problem (Trouba), that's fine. It's not a trade I love. It's a trade that I can live with.

A trade I love is Ben Chiarot, Jeff Petry, Justin Holl, Erik Gustafsson, and Andrew Copp to the bottom of an active volcano for a bag of pucks. That's the pie in the sky scenario that I want but can't have. Chiarot for Trouba is "well at least he's not the worst defenseman in the league."

No, he's really not. The guy is far from perfect, but he's also the best guy we have on the left side outside of Ed, and Trouba upgrades our right side over everyone that's not Seider.

If we can walk out of today with

Ed-Seider
Chiarot-Trouba
Albert-Petry

as our blueline, with either Gus or Holl shipped to NYR, we're a better team.

Gus isn’t leaving, we just signed him. It’s usually very wrong to trade guys you just signed and yzerman is old school.

He paid a 2nd to unload walman a year after signing him. Yzerman isn't afraid of undoing his mistakes.

That said, Shipping out Holl is probably a better fit for the roster.

Walman was already on the team before that tho, Gus is a FA add. You don’t trade guys you signed in FA 25 games after you signed them. It just doesn’t happen. And I don’t agree, holl is a better defenseman than Gus, trading Gus would be the best thing for us but it’s just not gonna happen.

He’s awful, a mainstay on one of the worst PKs ever and analytically he’s is often shown as the worst defenseman on the team. I do not get how you guys defend Chiarot, he makes almost 5 million and is terrible. He’s a replacement level defenseman. The only thing he does is bring physicality but that would instantly be replaced by trouba. He’s redundant, and you can’t bury him because he makes too much money.

Mantha signed for multiple years in November 20 and was traded in April 21, while this season started in January 21.
Not a FA signing, was already on the team beforehand. It’s different with guys already on the team, but when you just signed somebody in FA they don’t get moved that same year. It’s a bad look for a team to do that.

Please no to Trouba. Is this seriously all we have going on? This is so depressing. A pending Trouba inquiry? This is trash.

I just don't see Chiarot being as awful as people want to make out, and I think people go way overboard in complaining about him. You also don't refute that he's our best option on the left side after Ed. Moving him makes us worse.

And I think Gus is a trade a option if he liked his time in NY, and would get an opportunity to play every day. It's not like we're shipping him off to Utah.

Trouba is signed next year also.
I guess so. I misread his contact. Either way 2 years of trouba at 4m is a big upgrade over 2 years of holl at 3.4

2 years of trouba is better than 2 years of holl at similar cap hits.

If you think you can improve your team you absolutely trade guys 25 games after signing them. Vancouver traded Sprong 9 games after signing him just to dump him.

Ultimately, Im skeptical we land trouba at all but all options have to be on the table.

You have to be careful - you don't want to make a habit out signing a guy an immediately trading him. As a one off, it isn't the end of the world.

I would agree Holl is better than Gus but Id be happy with either being shipped out for trouba.
