For me, there are a few ways to react to the Ullmark trade.
In the moment, in a vacuum, I'm not very pleased with the return. That is partly due to hearing all the rumors for the past few months about possible destinations and returns. What they actually obtained pales in comparison. I don't like Korpisola, in a vacuum or otherwise, because that just seems like subtraction by addition. That part is unlikely to change unless he is flipped in the near future.
But then there are the other factors that temper the gut reaction. It will take another 10+ days to put the Ullmark trade in context. What other trades are coming? What free agent signings are coming? What will happen at the draft? Who will be gone and who will have joined over the next 2 weeks?
And of course there is the reality of Ullmark's situation, which is convenient to somewhat ignore, but which helped determine where he could be traded and what they could get for him.
Things could break many different ways. On July 5, we could be looking at a nothing burger as far as roster chances. Or we could be looking at some major upheaval to digest. Without knowing that, I can't really say what the Ullmark trade means or fully judge the return. Last night, I wasn't happy at all. Today, I'm not much happier. In 2 weeks, I could be very happy. Entirely TBD.
I will say, even though it's only the #25 pick in the 1st round, it probably still matters a fair amount. Boston has not been making 1st round picks for a few years. Their farm system is not the best around. The roster is ageing in place. Getting a crack at adding a 1st rounder who might someday get into the regular lineup was a big need. Could become a 2nd liner, could become a 3rd liner, could become an AHL lifer. And who knows, maybe they can inch their way up a bit to get a higher pick, whether that means #22 or #15. Not something to count on but... who knows. At least they're back in the game.
But taking a shot in the draft is important. Those teams that continuously skip drafting in the 1st round, it catches up to you and it's usually ugly.
