I’ve seen byram and rantanen by Avs fans a bunch of times. so it’s not really “my” proposal.

My question is is rantanen someone you whip out $12M for?

If you have the space to pay him 12 million, yes, it’s easy to justify paying him 12 million.

Also, he and Pettersson are similar caliber players, the difference would be positional value. Byram or Ritchie should be adequate for that.

Byram+Rantanen wouldn't offend most people but you're acting like Ritchie is just some throw in when he's not. Button has him ranked as the 6th best NHL affiliated prospect in the world.

I like Button more than most... and my reasoning is because of things like this (he has his own thoughts and just puts out what he thinks). That said, Button thinks some pretty wild things at times.

I don’t know if I would say they are similar calibre players. The defensive play alone is leagues apart

I would think you get a lesser kicker (B+, 2-3 rounder) back from Vancouver if either Byram or Ritchie are included.
Petey moves because he doesn't want to be there and the positional difference isn't enough to get one of those 2 outright

Not sure about that. Look at the Tkachuk trade. It was:

Tkachuk
4th round pick

Huberdeau
Weegar
1st round pick

IMO the value breakdown is pretty straightforward of:

Pettersson > Tkachuk

Rantanen > Huberdeau
Byram > Weegar

I think the hardest part to evaluate is Byram/Weegar. Byram being as young as he is and an expiring RFA are points for him. While Weegar being the better Dman is a point for him. Ultimately I think slight value favoring to Byram here but I'd say it is quite close.

Where it all balances out is with the Avs not including a 1st round pick in the deal.

I'd say Weegar had more value. Weegar is an analytic dream of a player, coming off 2 seasons where he was arguably a #1D, still in what GMs consider prime ages (that I disagree with), and was asking a reasonable amount on an extension.

While Byram's value is completely tied up in promise. He's an analytic nightmare, erratic on the ice, can't stay healthy (though this year looks positive so far), and has not shown he can be a consistent middle pairing defender let alone a top pairing or arguable #1.

Hello avs boardz

Been seeing a lot of rantanen for Petey proposals.

Rantanen + Byram is intriguing largely because we get Byram included in the package as well.

Rantanen and the contract he wants is a bit scary though. I’m more than fine re signing Pettersson to $12M as he’s a top 6 C and if he’s willing to re sign then this whole trade idea is moot, full stop. Rantanen on the other hand i’m not sure. Avs fans correct me if I’m wrong but he’s not an all situations guy? And many of his points come from Mackinnon as well? Though could be a case where both benefit each other.

I’d probably want Rantanen, Byram, and Ritchie back in an ideal trade so we at least get a promising center prospect back in return. Although I’m not sure if he’s untouchable or if that would be too much on your guys part.

Regardless, I really don’t think we end up winning a trade that involves Pettersson, but this is likely the type of deal that would happen.
Including Ritchie on top of Rantanen and Byram would be a big blow -- because at that point the Avs are running out of tradeable assets to fill their other holes (including the new and big need for a top four defensman in the absence of Byram). But in the hypothetical world where CMac actually wants to do something bold, yeah. MacK, Pettersson, and Colton down the middle solves all of the Avs' center issues for the forseeable future. Would probably want something like Podkolzin and a pick included. Podkolzin seems to be struggling to find his place in Vancouver but is the sort of winger Bednar can get something out of.

Regardless, I'm pretty certain our GM will never do something this big -- and, despite the rumors, I have to believe that the Canucks and Pettersson figure something out.

Based on the basesless chiclets rumor that Brady could be moved would anyone do Mikko for Brady?
I would do that, personally.

Mikko is the better scorer and point producer but B.Tkachuk is a pain in the ass to play against and can still put up 80 points. At $8.25M for the next 4 years after this one, hell yeah I'd make that deal.

I'm probably the only person on these boards who'd be more than okay with this trade. Probably would have to include more stuff just to have salaries balance out or whatever but pfffft yeah I would do this.
