Sure. They also have less overall assets using that theory, though. And they still go all out.

It’s a very different sport in terms of roster construction. Out of all the major North American sports basketball is the one where one player truly can carry a team quite far. Due to that, you can actually toss massive amounts of futures. A big NHL deal has a 1st round pick and maybe some prospects, a major NBA deal can involve years worth of 1sts being thrown out the window

No doubt they are different, though basketball does get misconstrued as being a one or two player team sport when it's really not. Just look at the LA Lakers. Two of the best players in the world yet struggling. You need a deep team to go far, just like in the NHL.

GMs in the NBA just happen to be more proactive in trying to acquire star players because then you can properly build around them. NHL teams are far too patient most of the time.

If I am CMAC, idgaf about draft picks this year, next year, in 2026 or in 2027. If I can get as many Stanley Cups as possible, I am willing to trade every last pick and prospect over the next four years to make that happen. Whether that be core type players or players to complement on really good contracts.

NHL GMs would never do that, though.

Who knows, maybe CMac is secretly recreating the Jokinen and Luongo for Parrish and Kvasha deal where the Avs get two guys that look mid and turn out to be Grade A. Most likely we trading for some current/former Jackets…but none of the guys that would actually be any good

Might have to do something with the fact there are no good Jackets :-D
