I still really like these two moves:

1st + RyJo for Dowd(@50%)
Byram for York + Frost

It's a solid depth move for this year, dumps RyJo, and gives us good players for reasonable cap hits next year as well. All 3 guys would be signed for next season:

Nuke - Mack - Mikko
Landy - Frost - Lehky
Wood - Colton - LOC
???? - Dowd - Kovalenko

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
York - ????(Chatfield)

George

That roster for next year would be at $81.5M. Which means you'd have $6M left for 4th line winger, a #5/6 RD, a backup goalie, and then a 13th forward and 7th Dman

You could actually build out the depth with players not just on league minimum contracts. Could grab a decent bottom pairing RD for ~$1.5M, a decent Backup goalie for $1.5M, and then still have $3M enough for 3 $1M players.

I get that Frost maybe isn't the perfect 2C, but he has produced to a near 50 point pace last year on a fairly poor offensive Flyers team and again this year is on a 45-50 point pace. I think if you put him with a couple solid wingers here he could be a 50-60 guy.

And at $2.1M it's the kind of target we need to make. We can't really afford much higher quite frankly.
Yeah I've watched a bit more of Frost, he'd probably work well with Landy/Lehky and Nuke.

Malinski as 7D, Jalen Chatfield as 6D

We need to find a Zach Whitecloud

Honestly, this seems like one of the most realistic scenarios of all the wishful speculation.

6 million remaining on a contract is the general threshold for a dump costing a 1st? With less than half the year left, RJ might cost a 2nd to move instead of a 1st. But theyre wanting a 1st for Dowd on his own. Do you really think the incrrase from a 2nd (to take RJ) to a 1st really meets their ask? Or do you think theiir ask for Dowd is overshooting?

I think its a bit of both. Asking for a 1st for Dowd is a little much IMO, but dumping RyJo right now instead of in the summer probably would cost a little more then just a 2nd.

Basically if the two moves were to happen separately, I think Dowd at 50% is worth a 2nd round pick. I think RyJo as a pure cap dump costs a 2nd. So you combine two 2nds of value you get roughly a late 1st. For the Caps, its a great way to secure the most valuable asset out of Dowd. For the Avs, it's a good way to dump RyJo while also getting a solid piece that fills an important depth role for a couple of playoff runs.

Dowd would be 4C here behind Colton obviously, but he can also play 3C and play pretty well in the role. He's been 3C in Washington for a couple years now and played well. I think having a guy like him as your 4C and really good 3C insurance would be quite valuable to a team with deep playoff aspirations for the next 2 years.

And again, you dump RyJo's $4M entirely without having to buy him out this summer and be stuck carrying a $1.3M penalty for the next 2 years. We honestly cant afford that penalty with Landy coming back. We need every single $ we can possibly find(Which btw we would get another $150k in space by having our 4C make only $650k instead of the league minimum of $800k, or more).

Unfortunately this would never happen but getting a Saros level goalie would hide a lot of our roster problems. We'd IMO even be fine with a Henrique level 2C addition if we had an elite goalie like him.

I had too much time so I played with Armchair GM. I did a couple of signing and trades, I suck at these so don't flame me too much. Completely unrealistic but here it goes:

TRADES:

To Nashville: Byram, Georgiev, Avs 2024 1st round pick
To Avalanche: Saros (1.25M retained), Nashville 2024 2nd round pick

To Buffalo: Rantanen
To Avalanche: Cozens, Noah Östlund & Buffalo 2024 1st round pick (top 3 protected, if top 3 then 2025 1st round pick)

To Chicago: Ryan Johansen, Nashville 2024 2nd round pick
To Avalanche: Chicago 2026 6th round pick

Total out: Rantanen, Byram, Georgiev, Johansen
Total in: Saros, Cozens, Östlund, BUF 2024 1st round & CHI 2026 6th. Also cap space to sign depth players.

SIGNINGS:

Drouin 3yrs x 3,5M
Zucker 3yrs x 3,5M
Kulikov 2yrs x 1,25M
Brossoit 2yrs x 1,4M

LINEUP:

Drouin - Mackinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Cozens - Zucker
Landeskog - Colton - Wood
LOC - Östlund - Kovalenko
Pavel

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Kulikov - Malinski

Saros
Brossoit

With the signings I made this team has 40k cap space if the cap rises to 87,6M.

I'd sign Saros to 7 yrs x 8M contract
If Landeskog continues playing I'd trade Colton after the 25-26 season and have Ritchie or Östlund as 3C, then we shouldn't have cap issues even with re-signing Saros.

If Landeskog doesn't continue playing.. well, cap isn't an issue then at all.

Buffalo fans would likely murder me. I personally value 100+ point players a lot. I'd HATE to trade Rantanen but the cap will be a huge issue going forward, especially if Landy continues to play.

I'd hate to pay that much for a goaltender, 8mil.

They are too voodoo ,even if they are great.

Rather go with the approach we had before. Try to win with a mediocre goaltender. If you get a good year, easy cup.

If we were getting a Vasilevsky I’d be all over it. I just can’t tell if Saros is going through this Gibson decline or if he’s just over being on a perpetually bad Nashville team

LA have tried hard on Saros before. If he’s traded I expect Blake is the guy who pays up for him.

I mean, Vasilevskiy's numbers aren't better. He's putting up an even worse season and he's all over the place with his consistency. His numbers over the past few years have been very much the same as Saros. I'm not saying he's bad, or that there's no risk at all with Saros, but he hasn't been better so what's the difference?

If they seriously try to run him as a C as soon as he comes over, and that’s the solution. That’s a giant turd on this core.

I'm not sure Kovy has the skating to play C. 4C would probably be OK...maybe 3C...but I think 2C is way too high for him with his skating. Regardless I just can't see the Avs gambling on Kovy to fix their 2C issue unless he comes in the NHL with guns blazing. I can see them trying him at 4C though as a way to be able to keep him in the lineup.
