I have grilled CMac as much as anyone, but he can't control injuries and PA programs.

For example, if the Oilers lost Hyman, Nugent-Hopkins, and McLeod, this would be their lineup today:

Kane - McDavid - Foegele
Holloway - Draisaitl - Perry
Janmark - Ryan - Brown
Erne - Hamblin - Gagner

Not exactly scaring anyone even with 97 and 29.

You take 3 top nine forwards away from any team and shit will look bleak AF.
We can't count Landy as "missing" anymore. He's been gone two years, and I'd also point out that we're using up all of his cap space in order to ice our current roster. It's not like they're running a roster permanently ~7 million under the cap -- his money has been allocated to the current group. If he returns next year, the Avs are going to have to find a way to make some pretty desperate cuts elsewhere to fit him in.

Nuke is a huge loss, no doubt about it. But the fact that we lose Nuke and a checking third liner in O'Connor and our roster looks like that is kind of a huge problem. Injuries happen. At least, in your example, the Oilers can trot out a stellar lineup of centers.

Exactly. And there isn't much we can really do because Nichushkin and O'Connor will be back.

Are we supposed to trade assets to temporarily replace them in the lineup?

If any team loses 1st line and 3rd line wingers their depth takes a hit.

Drouin - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen- Johansen- Rantanen
Wood - Colton - O'Connor
Parise - Wagner - Kiviranta

Cogliano - Olofsson - MacDermid are pushed out of the lineup.

That is 10x better than what we are starting tonight.

God, that's a sad lineup. Our second line is a third line, and our third and fourth lines should be combined to make a pretty good fourth line -- and the excess from that combination shouldn't be on the team.

I dont even know if that's true. Parise is the only guy in the bottom 6 I would say makes for a legitimately good 4th liner. The rest are 13th forward caliber(Olofsson, Kiviranta, Cogs) or worse(MacDermid, Wagner).

Landy doesn't count against the cap so he isn't missing. His 7M cap hit is in the lineup and playing.

We're only missing Nuke and LOC, which isn't a lot. Our whole defense is at full strength and we have our #1 goalie.

Avs so far this year have been significantly healthier than previous years.

Other teams get injuries too. More importantly, why do you have RyJo at 2C? He isn't playing 2C, he's playing 4th line minutes every game.

If only we could jettison Johansen and trade for Jenner at 50%.
I would be so happy.gif

If he was healthy, the roster doesn't have Johansen and Wood. Simple as that. So you lose a 3rd line wing in Wood if Landeskog is in the lineup.

False.

If you remove Wood and RyJo you get 6.5M of cap space back.
Add Landy (7M) you're still 500k short and you don't have a 2C.

Try again.

The Avs have more than 500k of free space, and the no 2C angle isn't really an argument. We don't have a 2C we would be basically the same as now. Looking for a cheap 2C with term, by using picks and one of Bo, G or Manson.

That's not the point at all.

The point is we don't have Landy in the lineup right now but we spend his money elsewhere.

If Landy isn't on LTIR this year CMac still gets a 2C last summer. We probably still have Ryjo but no Colton, no Wood and no someone else who makes more than 3M (pick one).

Lol. You try again. The Avs would simply choose to run one of Rantanen/Landeskog at center IF Landeskog was in the lineup. Then they'd just send Caleb Jones down. Voila. Cap issue figured out.

I never said it'd be prudent. But it's likely what they'd do. They knew about this issue when re-signing Nichushkin/Lehkonen so we can't go back that far and hypothesize one of them not being here.

Landeskog looks a lot better than I expected he would tbh. Might be a chance we see him in the playoffs…. A small chance

It's not a small chance, we will 100% see Landeskog in the playoffs.

Whether that's for one shift, one period, one game, whatever, he will play in this year's playoffs. I'll bet the house on it.

Oh yeah, that's totally reasonable to believe that they'd have done that

But CMac wasn't aware of that yet. He'd still have went after a 2C last summer with Landy in the lineup, without knowing that RyJo isn't one.

That’s absolutely not true. Chris MacFarland said in a recent interview that they’re not going to rush things, that they want Landeskog to play in the long term.

That’s not to say Landeskog won’t force their hand, but I don’t think there’s 100% chance of anything.
