Capitals didn’t do really anything in 2018 either I believe.

You're right, although Kempny was pretty important for them in the playoffs, leading to them giving him that 4 year contract.

I chose the Blues over the Caps since MdZ was pretty useless. Kempny was logging key minutes for the Caps.

I don't think the window will be closed, but it's a different mentality I guess. It seems like you want to be competitive as long as possible, and I want them to go balls out for a handful of years and take the cup by any means possible. Hard to say what's the best, but it's hard to win like the Pens did where they had 2 windows.

I personally don't think we draft well enough to keep the window open super long, so that's partly why I lean the way I do

That's close to how I view it, and I agree their draft record makes it harder, but that "competitive as long as possible" time frame, includes some very competitive teams with the best players in the world.

That makes a big difference between the Avs and just a good team being as competitive as long as possible.

Think about it this way. If the Avs went all in every year, there's a good chance they wouldn't have won last year anyway with all their missing players, and they wouldn't have Ritchie, because they probably traded that 1st round pick in a year they shouldn't have.

Which would mean they wouldn't have a potential cheap 2C with Ritchie in future years, that will allow them to keep good players like Val and Lehky, and have more shots at a Cup than they would have by going all in when they shouldn't have.

Also, they may not have Lehky, because they went all in a previous year for a worse player, and couldn't afford him. Manson too, who I think is very valuable in the playoffs, though some disagree.

That's the benefit of calculated aggression. You wait for the right players that fit your team well, and you believe you can keep so they can help you long term, and then you aggressively pursue them like we know the Avs did with Lehky all year. And you don't give up key players/prospects, you give up prospects like Barron or Helleson who play a position you have lots of depth in.

Just my opinion, but I think this is much closer to the optimal strategy for team building under the cap, than just rolling the dice by going all in every year.

I just want to see the team trying to improve. At this point I'd say the roster has been neglected. They can't hit home runs on every gamble. This is gonna be as good as a shot as they get in the coming years. Make it count and get some pieces that can help next year.

You’re right but I think at the time it wasn’t viewed as much but my memory is shot.

Yeah, but Kempny only had 5 points in 24 games, and was still in a depth role far behind the big three who they relied heavily on. You can see it in their playoff minutes.

Carlson - 25:38
Niskanen - 25:23
Orlov - 24:12
Kempny - 17:42

I’m not sure what we are discussing.

I said the Blues getting MdZ was a smaller move than the Caps getting Kempny.

Do you disagree?

Teams around the league know how desperate the Avs are to get off RyJo’s contract..that’s not a good thing.
Apparently another team offered a 1st and a player. Lebrun thinks it was EDM with Ceci, so could also just be Calgary doesn't want to add salary for next year.

I woild consider a defenseman to be the absolute least of their problems right now. So strange.
2C is obviously a bigger need, but them wanting to move RyJo clearly means they're looking to add another C. Tanev and a 2C would've been a great TDL.

I was mostly agreeing with you (?) that the Caps didn't make big moves their Cup year either, but disagreeing that Kempny logged key minutes.

I have a feeling this will be the case with a lot of teams. I’ve said it before but I think the cost to move off RyJo will be more than we expect however it’s good that they’re aware they need to dump him.

Frankly I don’t care about the amount of assets they give up as long as they fill the needs of the team. In a year where there is no clear top team above the rest(could argue Florida) you have to go all in.
