Gryz is a 5 on 5 specialist (with question marks even if you are a fan) and Forbort is a PK specialist. They combine for 6.7 in cap. If you can get someone that can do both for 4.5 it’s something to ponder. But someone like that usually doesn’t cost 4.5. Which is what makes Chychrun so interesting even if he might be a downgrade in some aspects (but an upgrade in others like actually being able to shoot the puck).

And there's no reason for the Bruins front office to believe a guy like Chychrun wouldn't improve in the Bruins system with guys like Lindholm, McAvoy and Carlo, who are infinitely better than anything in AZ

But they can extend him at a lower, number right?

If they both agree to a 5 x 9.0 extension, that's ok, right?

(not that they can afford even 9.0 --- just wondering)

sure…but why would he do that?
From a business perspective.
A team either makes the player a qualifying offer or he can be a UFA.
He can then shop himself everywhere.

Got it.

I'm not sure if/what the QO was on Lindholm last year --- but didn't he extend at a lower number than expected?

Lindholm was going to be a UFA. Timo on the other hand will be an RFA, but if SJ wants to be compensated if he signs a QO with another team, then they'd need to QO him at $10 million. If they decline to give him his $10 million QO then he becomes a UFA.

different. He was going to be a UFA. So Sweeney had to be very confident they could work out an extension. Which of course happened.

Meier will be a RFA . Different rules apply. QA being one of them. Thats based on last year base salary minus signing bonus. So his contract for this year( last year of contract) was end loaded at 10M base with no bonus. Big QA if thats the road it goes down. But done in such a way that because of high number he could possibly be a UFA early. By team not doing it.

After the Greer fight last night i'm all in for Looch. We have no tough guys. If the B's can work something out with the Flames at the deadline that would be fine with me. Looch's value shouldn't be that expensive plus he can be the 10th forward.

For anyone still kicking around the idea of Pat Kane…

You're not acquiring Kane to shutdown the other team, you're acquiring him to generate offense.
Kane maybe done for the season, he needs hip surgery

Patrick Kane, RW, Hawks

Stats: 44 GP, 9-23-32

Contract: $10.5-million cap hit, pending UFA

Cons: Seems like the whole league knows now that Kane needs hip surgery. If he doesn’t shut down the season and get the surgery soon to be ready for free agency and 2023-24, he’s going to be damaged goods. If he only wants to come to the Rangers, Drury could see if a low-ball offer gets accepted. But it’s hard to see how Kane is the centerpiece of anyone’s deadline plans now and even a last-minute deal would require major finessing due to his cap hit.

Yeah, I don't think folks realize the cap comeuppance happening next year (if the cap only goes up a million) and removing salary from the D group, while still trying to keep it good, is going to be the cleanest path to remaining competitive.

1. Toewes with double retention is my #1 target with Smith/Reilly also going out
2. Tarasenko would be the homerun swing I'd go for if the Blues were sellers, would cost 1st +Lysell with retention
3. Schenn for Zboril

Marchy-Bergy-Debrusk
Zacha-Krejci-Pasta
Hall-Coyle-Tarasenko
Foligno-Toewes-Frederic
I cannot see Tarasenko bringing in a 1st and a top prospect. He might get a first and backwash. Teams' top prospects don't tend to move for deadline UFA deals. And in the unlikely even Tank does cost that, might as well add a bit and grab Meier instead, as he's exponentially better at this point in their careers.

I was going to say Schenn is terrible, but so is Zboril. No blood, no foul.

Yep and they could give other teams permission to talk with Meier and his agent in an attempt to workout an extension in efforts of getting a greater return.

He is very affordable. Young. Wants to win. Chychurn is actually a very good add for any contender. After last nights loss to the bruins due to poor defensive coverage in front of the net I’m sure Toronto just called the yotes and offered them every draft pick they have left for the next three years.

I feel like Sweeney pioneered this move.

Would have made no difference. Simmonds wanted to fight Greer, not Looch, Freddie, Shawn Thornton or anybody else.
