Where is the big mouth always putting down Staal?

New York Post:

And though it was a collective effort, Staal and Pionk were the pillars on the back end. Pionk was at a significant size disadvantage while battling in front, yet he got the job done. Indeed, Quinn had him out for the final 1:29 after the Stars had pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, where it’s kind of a melee.

The Staal-Pionk matchup pair has been intact for the last 13 matches. Of the club’s eight defensemen, only one has avoided being scratched. That’s Staal, who has been difficult to play against and has defended well while continuing to confound those who are confounded by his presence in the lineup, if not on the roster.

Brooks reads these boards.

I love how we are projecting Lias as a bottom 6 player already when he is 20 years old and has played like 10 NHL games.

Chytil was an AHL player 2 weeks ago on here, now he is the best player on the team.

There's a lesson to be learned from this, have patience and don't jump to conclusions.

Edit: This lesson is multiplied when said player is flanked on the wing by Cody McLeod.

Agree whole heartedly with all of this.

Blew by Lias last year. @Edge told the board he was coming strong and sure enough he rear viewed Lias before Traverse City ended.

Your top 10 forwards next year.

Panarin
Zibanejad
Chytil
Kreider
Kravstov
Buchnevich
Howden
Vesey
Fast
Namestnikov
Plus prob whichever kid we get in the Hayes trade make it 11.

WHO WANTS TO WALK BY LIAS?

Funny that analysts called 50 a “safe pick” with limited upside. I think they meant “it’s safe to say he has limited upside.”

I guess I'll be listening to games on this thing for the rest of the year?
You turn me on, am a radio.

Staal sucked yesterday.

The emphatic nature people are speaking in regards to the fact that they think Lias isn't going to be more than a bottom six player despite the fact that he's about a month into his second season post draft is absolutely hilarious.

Give me a break.

Ah yes, no more growing to do there. As we know in hockey, if a player isn't good by his D+2 season then there's no way it's going to happen. Fully formed at this point.

You said he doesn't use his linemates and when he does anything, he does it all by himself. That is the definition of dominance. Now it's that he doesn't dominate with his size and skill. How does he have 17 points in 21 games with 6 PPP? You complain about 3 EVG in 21 games but that's also 4 PPG for a satisfactory total of 7 goals in 21 games. If he has 6 EVG and 1 PPG, then you'd complain he doesn't do enough on the PP to be considered a legitimate 1C. 5 EVG and 2 PPG? Not enough PPG still for a 1C. Would 4 EVG and 3 PPG be better than 3 EVG and 4 PPG?
Something to think about. I mean, you really have to think hard. Lol. Anyway, some people are just never happy, but i do see his point, if hes not being just plain difficult.

I never really looked at Zbad as a 1C, then again, I still wanted him here when he was still playing (and killing us) with Ottawa. If Ottawa thought he would pan out as a 1C, do you think they would have traded him? Prob not.
They wanted Brassard for experience and leadership, we wanted to get younger......we got the best of that deal, even if Zbad is a 2C.

He has rounded out his game and become a better defensive player. Lets face it, if he helps minimize other teams top lines, and still scoring at say .75 rate, then i suppose we should be happy. Its not always what you score, its what you dont give up as well. Imo.

This feels so much like a Torts coached team in that Quinn is squeezing water from a rock with this unbelievable effort level. There will be no tank this year... Quinn is just too good. It was obvious earlier in the season even when we were losing. If a team is going to try this hard, they are going to be tough to beat.

Quinn seems to get players to play over their heads and get the most out of them for the most part. Keep getting him players that have ability because he's excellent at getting them to buy in.

Ottawa wanted Brassard because he was more of a name in the league... Same reason they traded everything for Matt Duchene

Basically, everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong last season.
Everything happens for a reason.....right? Supposedly anyway. If everything went WRONG last season as you say........many will say everything is going wrong "this season". I do not per sé, because its been fun to watch and winning is good for the boys, but this really isnt, what was part of the master game plan. Shouldve let AV stay 1 more year, that would've solidified another high pick. Quinnie is too good.

You know, one of the underrated aspects of this rebuild was moving out the old leadership and allowing new leaders to emerge.
And probably when all is said and done......we will all (many anyway) miss Marc Staal. They dont really play him "because of" his contract. He just doesnt make those egregious mistakes that everyone that has been benched makes. Yes, he is slow and thinks the game like a 50 year old, but he is a solid, steady defender of the net.

This goes back to when Stepan and even Brass centered Kreider. He's a possession demon and he's this generation's Tomas Holmstrom in front of the net. If he takes the JVR contract next off-season, the Rangers should consider themselves lucky.
Steps was adept at passing off the boards and sending Kreider off and away. Probably accounted for 15-20 of his assists.

It's one of those things when humans are pushed up against the corner and lose their thought process and decision making abilities and instinctively do the easy and comfortable thing that's almost always the opposite of what needs to be done in a difficult situation.
This is me right now. Thank you for putting it all into perspective.......going through a rough patch here.

Here is the thing... I think we need to trade Hayes now. He's playing fantastic... and we have a glut of centers. Only way to get Lias more time is to move a center.

Now is the time... sell high... Plenty of teams (Dallas might be a prime landing spot) would love to get Hayes.

Overall, I think we are way too quick to turn on these kids when they don’t hit the ice with guns blazing.

Be it ADA, Chytil, Andersson, Pionk, whoever, we are way too quick with the doubts and criticism.
Agreed. Way too quick and would rather EXACTLY what Quinnie is doing, starting them off slowly and making them EARN their rising up the food chain.
Better than fast, furious and burnt out in a heartbeat.

Which means, Lias will come along in a couple of weeks......right?
