Huh? Over the last 8 games he is averaging about 20 minutes a night, he is not getting anything close to sheltered minutes or "favored" lineups. Maybe people get defensive when you spew out BS?
Staal and Pionk play against the opponents top line.
Also, not playing 1PK and yes, small sample size.
Did you get the bit where I like ADA? Will he live up to many's expectations? That is yet to be seen, but he has the talent.

Not well.
I would agree that Pionk is being thrown into the fire. Playing with Staal doesn't help all that much.
If ADA was put into Pionks role and got exposed in the D zone, would you be patient with him or crucify him like many do to our almost rookie FA signing?
Point is that Pionk is a damn good player. He isn't a top pairing D at this stage, but he is doing a decent job and putting up points.

Pionk was battling out there tonight. From what he brings on the offensive side I can deal with it. Plus only in his first full year in the NHL. This coach and the last both have lots of faith in him. Hoping he turns into a Ryan Ellis

My issue on his pair is not with him, though there are a ton of things he needs to clean up.

He'd probably get shat on too.

But if you gave him those minutes, he'd do a better job with them. There are certain things that DeAngelo does at an infinitely higher level than Pionk which are required for a good NHL defenseman. Pionk has done a good job on the PP and I'm pleased that hes starting to shoot more, but there is just so much work that needs to be done in his own end, both with and without the puck, DeAngelo has the first half of that down.

Anyone who was paying attention during the 2014 playoffs shouldn’t be surprised by Kreider.

Him coming back from the broken hand and McD shaking the shoulder injury were probably the most important keys to that run.
Yep and you could see it in him again last year after coming back from a very serious injury and playing tremendous hockey down the stretch.

That is speculating though.
ADA is stronger. Pionk's lack of strength seems to be his biggest issue in his own end.
What is it that ADA does that makes you think he would do a better job?j
Keep in mind when you are out there against the opponents best players, time and space are very limited.

Overall, I think we are way too quick to turn on these kids when they don’t hit the ice with guns blazing.

Be it ADA, Chytil, Andersson, Pionk, whoever, we are way too quick with the doubts and criticism.

People want/hope for the special talent that steps in right away and shows that they're elite.

It's extremely rare and unlikely any of the players the Rangers have will show that but we all hope...

Chytil is so off-center in his NHL.com portrait

Ooops! He did it again!
Before the game I wished 4th goal in a row for Filip...

Where is the big mouth always putting down Staal?

New York Post:

And though it was a collective effort, Staal and Pionk were the pillars on the back end. Pionk was at a significant size disadvantage while battling in front, yet he got the job done. Indeed, Quinn had him out for the final 1:29 after the Stars had pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, where it’s kind of a melee.

The Staal-Pionk matchup pair has been intact for the last 13 matches. Of the club’s eight defensemen, only one has avoided being scratched. That’s Staal, who has been difficult to play against and has defended well while continuing to confound those who are confounded by his presence in the lineup, if not on the roster.
