The Senators sent Tkachuk to Florida in a blockbuster trade on Sunday, landing three first-round picks and a second-rounder for their 26-year-old captain. Brady Tkachuk had told Ottawa management he wasn't going to sign an extension when his current deal expires in 2028.

Yeah sure. But Steve Staios, their GM, told that Brady asked for a trade in April:
Ottawa Senators president and general manager Steve Staios said Monday that Tkachuk requested a trade about 10 days after the end of the Senators' season. Staios declined to say why.

Steve Staios literally confirmed Brady asked for a trade.

You should watch his presser.

The way it was initially reported was that Brady told them he wouldn't stay after his current contract, which is basically the same as asking for a trade.

Now I don't know if that changed, or if Staios realizes it's essentially the same thing and just said that he "asked for a trade."

At the end of the day, for players like that it means "If you don't want to lose me for nothing, trade me."

Well by the sounds of it, he had basically been telling everyone (including his teammates) for years that he didn't intend to stay in Ottawa. And now, after it had reached a boiling point after the season, he finally told the GM "trade me to Florida plz". And they obliged.

Just wait until Vegas says a player requested a trade and the player disagrees that a request was made.

I mean it could happen for any team but you know Vegas will do it to Marner once he leaves his prime years.

McCrimmon: what's your summer plans Mitch?

Marner: I'd like to go to the GTA and stay at the family cottage by the lakes. Maybe see the Colorado river.

McCrimmon: request granted. We'll have you in Winnipeg by end of the week.

Hot potato, now everyone knows they tried to send Harley to Columbus in year one of his 8-year contract.
I don't think it really is that big of a deal TBH

"Yeah sorry we tried to trade you for the best D-man in the game (last year)"

I don't think he'll feel slighted.

Ok, that doesn’t change the fact that Werenski didn’t say that to Columbus 2 years in advance if his intent was to finish the contract and walk. I get that it’s different than, say, Larkin who clearly doesn’t want to play in Detroit anymore.

Still, functionally it’s the same as a trade request. A "soft" one.

There's literally nothing wrong with an employee honoring his contract and not renewing.

Hellebuyck and Larkin are still in a very much different place, compared to those players who are not going to reup in a year and want a change of scenery.

Define nothing wrong.

Blocking trades and walking at the end of the contract is the most damaging outcome for a team, worse than a player with an NMC asking for a trade and narrowing it down to one destination. At least that still gives the team a chance to extract value.

That’s what Marner did, except he has the excuse that the trade offers came late.

You really lean heavily on the owner side for all of these things.

Team gives player a no trade clause.

Player honours the duration of his contract and never requests a trade. Gives it his all for the team.

Contract expires and player moves on.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this.

Why is Werenski or any other player obligated to help their team out? The team hasn’t exactly done a lot to make his job any easier. I’d get it more if this was a player that played on an incredibly successful team looking for a change of pace, but that’s not this situation
