Watching the Kyper & Bourne show on sportsnet and mentionning Rantanen. Not sure if they are just speculating but they seem to think he signed in Dallas both to get the whole thing over with AND to shove it down Colorado's throat. Whatever.
I doubt it. To me it's pretty clear what happened, and there are plenty of reports to support this:

- The Avs and Colorado are very close to an extension last summer. Probably around 11-12M dollars
- Draisaitl signs for 14M, the same agent who has Draisaitl also has Mikko and puts all talks on hold, demanding the same money
- Rantanen and his camp don't really believe CMac has the balls to trade him, and they will eventually cave in
- Rantanen is traded, and totally blindsided as he thought they were still negotiating and that the Avs were not serious about trading him
- Rantanen has a not so great go with Carolina, his agent also tells him that the Carolina offer is not the biggest one they could get
- Dallas emerges as an option, Mikko likes it
- Deal goes dead because his agent is still pushing for more money
- Mikko eventually calls up his agent and tells him to get the deal done

I would argue, that If Mikko could time travel 3 months back and sign for whatever the Avs were offering him (11.25-11.75 seems to be the consensus), he would do it in a heartbeat. He almost did that during the summer. Then his agent got Draisaitl that contract, and thought he could do the same with Rantanen and convinced him to go along. Rantanen finally saw the writing on the wall that 13-14M is a pipedream when the Dallas deal was falling through, and told the agent to take what was offered.

The silver lining is that the Stars are rolling with Ceci or Dumba in their top 4
I think the Avs, Stars, and Panthers are the 3 favourites on paper.

their bottom 3D are:

Avs - Manson, Lindgren, Malinski
Stars- Ceci, Dumba, Bischel
Panthers - Mikkola, Kulikov, Schmidt

I don't think there's a clear loser, and if anything I like our group there. So that's one thing that gives me some relief. There just weren't a lot of depth D moved this week.

I don't doubt Kyper here, because he was the first to break the eventual Rantanen signing as well. He has a source in the Rantanen camp. But what would've this meant for Mitch Marner? And what does his 12x8 deal in Dallas mean for Marner?

But it wasn't enough, and we f***ed ourselves for next year too.
Ah yes. Doom and gloom spoken in absolutes, never change lol…

We inarguably upgraded 2c,3c,1g, while acquiring a ton more depth as a team this year.

We have all been saying that we can’t waste these years of Mack and Mak.

Yet you consistently complain about this team not being good enough while simultaneously complaining about the cost we need to pay to upgrade. This while also speaking in absolutes that we cannot defeat the stars, a team we may not even face.

You must live off your own tears or something….

And so the bastards sent him to our division instead. And to think I used to like Carolina.

If we match up against Dallas in the 1st round, and they possibly don’t have Heiskenen, we should be the favorites. I wouldn’t say this before all the moves, but now I can. If they have Heiskenen, we are pretty evenly matched IMO. It will come down to Blackwood vs Oettinger

I want them full strength, and with no excuses. Bring them on - and watch us devour them.

Because it was a half measure. It wasn't truly all in. We needed one more forward and a defenseman. We spent a f*** ton of assets to get a lot older for one year, and we still aren't the clear favorite. I was fine with the goalie trades and the Mikko trade, but this TDL was not great. Not enough, and getting older is never a good thing. God, I hope I'm wrong, but I really don't think I will be. Have a feeling this slams the window shut for this core. I have no confidence in flipping guys like Colton and Wood for anything of real value after this year.
