That is a great accomplishment but why not look to improve as Florida and Colorado did? Ovi has one year left, the team is good, push your chips in. Instead, they are riding the fence here which for me is no bueno. That approach usually has you losing at the end of the day. I don’t see how they beat that FL line up in a playoff series.
Playing devil's advocate a bit here but Vancouver pushed their chips in last year and look where they are now.

Being surprisingly really good is a reason to go all-in and capitalize on a chance you know you might not get. At the same time, it's also a reason to hold back and not throw assets at what is at its base an unsustainable run.

Would they be better off in a series against Florida with Marchand on their side instead of the other? Absolutely. They certainly wouldn't be favored by any metric in either scenario.

it’s really hard to argue with all of the negative nelly’s coming out of the woodwork.

And before we just hand FLA the Prince of Wales Trophy or the Stanley cup, let’s not forget that everyone wanted to do the same for Boston after we traded Hath and Orlov to them. They had destiny in their possession. Until they didn’t.

I would have liked more. Fine with where we landed.

Okay, so you're saying that Ovi can't help us in the playoffs and, thus, we have to construct a team capable of carrying him to another Cup?

There was nothing we could do at the deadline to achieve that.

Ovi is still capable of contributing to a winner. I believe that. Your mileage may vary.

You posted that you were on the fence, that "it's either this or that" and I replied with a rebuttal to "that" so you'd land on "this." I wasn't selectively quoting. You said you were on the fence, I preferred having you on the first side, so I gave reasons that the other side is a bad place to be.

My apologies if you took it another way.

What world are you living in that we aren't about to take another run at the Cup?

I mean seriously... We're #1 in the East by a wide margin. Our 3rd line sputters on offense but otherwise moves the needle the way they should. I would specifically ask which trade that happened that you think we should have been in on, but then you said this...

I would not. If that's how you really feel, then we are clearly not having the same conversation. I want to be back in the playoffs ASAP, if not immediately, when Ovi retires because I am I fan of the team first and foremost.

We have a legit shot this year, and there's no reason we shouldn't have one next year. We owe Ovi a shot. We do not owe him the destruction of the team's immediate future to make that shot marginally better.

This organization gave him MANY shots over the years with good teams capable of winning. It sucks hard that we only pulled it off once, but that's what it means to be in a league this competitive. I LOVE the parity in the NHL, so I accept that winning a Cup is crazy hard. Going "all-in" at the TDL to the extent you're proposing here is almost always a bad thing to do.
I think you are in the minority here my friend.

Ovi winning another cup as a Cap is far better than any success over the next 20 years. Ovi is bigger than the Capitals.

I would trade 1 more Ovi cup for 2 non Ovi Caps cups.

Man, it’s amazing how much better SJ is than CHI at their rebuilds. SJ sells both Walman and Zetterlund. Both of whom have been good contributors, the latter I thought was going to be core.

CHI on the other hand, has Donato whose value has never been been higher (with an unsustainable sh%) in a seller’s market, and they are obsessed with re-signing him, even though he’s too old for Bedard’s core. Just dumb asset mgmt.

So do we manage Ovi’s minutes to preserve him for the playoffs or let him go full speed chasing 895 and the playoffs be damned? Not sure which approach makes more sense but I don’t see Carbs giving Ovie a night off.

Negative Nellie’s vs the Toxicly Positivos shall be the teams. Choose an allegiance.

Strike one for the Nepo Baby.

Honestly, today was pretty sad. Their primary competition in Florida and Tampa both got significantly better.

I would rather do nothing than piss away a 2nd round pick for a JAG from Pittsburgh.

Ovi and Carlson don’t have as much tread left as they once did. Ovi can’t be your main go to option in the loffs when sh*t gets real and nor should he be forced to at 39. They should’ve gotten him some help IMHO. Top six Taylor Raddysh in the playoffs will be something when an injury comes up.
Who? Name a player who was dealt for a price you'd pay.

Lmao this has got to be the worst take in here. We're fans of the team, which is and will be more than just Ovechkin.

I don't understand what "big" move was expected by anyone here. Even if they wanted to go all in who would it be for? I get the sentiment of wanting to make a move but if they're not out there or better yet the ones that are out there are marginal improvements at best what's the point?

Some just wanted to see something happen for the sake of saying we did something. Which as others have said we did already JC6, LT, Eller, and Leo to come. The East just loaded up to try and catch up to us we didn't have to arm up to catch up to anyone with a 7 point lead on the conference.

Silver lining, regardless of how the upcoming playoff run ends: All the pending UFAs who were not resigned but moved by their old teams will become signing targets this summer. If Cap mgmt can do a limited repeat of the last off-season, they'll be in even better shape for the next one.
They'll also have a couple of top ~40 picks to move should they want to make trades. The asset base remains strong to pounce should a potential core piece become available. Whereas now so many of the powerhouses seem kind of spent. Then again, some seem to always find a way...

I definitely would have liked more quality for this push to help avoid the possibility they fizzle at the end. And just generally to more significantly reward them for what they've done, particularly in light of how up there 8/74 are getting and perhaps unlikely to have the stamina needed for very sizeable roles over the course of a deep push. The Caps are a bit different having Leonard in the wings and despite what was said it surely had an impact. But it's still hard to love their chances against a FLA/TBL at the very least barring Leonard being an immediate beast. I struggle to recall the last NCAAer that's immediate stepped in and crushed like that. Kreider to some extent but they may need more.

IINM I read the Caps have the easiest remaining schedule down the stretch. Maybe not the best playoff prep but it might keep the offense humming along as they chase 895.

Mmm I wouldn’t go that far, but I would give up 5 years of playoffs success for another Cup this year or next.
