They better not, but my 2 cents are that they would have budged and overpaid for Crochet if they had gotten Soto. Because Crochet could have been on the payroll for only 3m. The extension could have been announced in April during the season. They did something similar with Adrian Gonzalez.

Now that Soto is not happening, neither is Crochet. Mayer would be a dramatic overpay. Cease returned less value than a top 20 prospect.

If the Red Sox pay with prospects instead of pure dollars, I am going to be annoyed.

To me, Crochet fits as a final move of the offseason. If you really want to go all-in and get Soto plus Burnes or Fried (or any other combination of major moves), trading for Crochet makes sense as the final piece for a contender (similar to the Sale acquisition). If the plan is no big free agents and Crochet-only, I don't see how that makes sense for where the team is today. They're not Crochet-away from being a contender.

I agree, but they may not. Crochet is young enough to not be considered a "win now" move. And their aggressive plays for Yamamoto (allegedly) and Crochet makes it seem like they are still shying away from giving 30 years old pitchers 6-7-8 year deals.

I guess it could be BS anyway. Had they made MM available, the trade would be done by now. WSOx won‘t get anything better than that.

I would have no problem moving Mayer in a deal for Crochet if that’s what it comes to. Crochet was always an elite arm coming into the league and if he didn’t have the injury he had and if the White Sox hadn’t rushed him and made him a RP, he’s probably be going for a lot more. That said, idk how much the Red Sox should add in

Conforto to LAD. Writings are on the wall concerning Teoscar. And he by himself wouldn‘t be worth giving up a high pick for.

1. FA: Burnes / Fried
2. FA: Teoscar Hernandez

Do we know what the pick would be, or is it based on the contract?

Any team that signs a player who has rejected a qualifying offer is subject to the loss of one or more Draft picks. However, a team’s highest first-round pick is exempt from forfeiture. (Players who are unsigned after the start of the MLB Draft in the year that follows the rejection of their qualifying offer are no longer tied to Draft pick compensation and can be signed without their new club needing to forfeit a Draft pick.)

Three tiers of Draft pick forfeiture – based on the financial status of the signing team – are in place to serve as a penalty for signing a player who rejected a qualifying offer:

• Competitive Balance Tax payors: A team that exceeded the CBT threshold in the preceding season will lose its second- and fifth-highest selections in the following year’s Draft, as well as $1 million from its international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. If such a team signs multiple qualifying-offer free agents, it will forfeit its third- and sixth-highest picks as well.

• Revenue-sharing recipients: A team that receives revenue-sharing money will lose its third-highest selection in the following year’s Draft. If it signs two such players, it will also forfeit its fourth-highest pick.

• All other teams: If a team does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the CBT salary threshold in the previous season, it will lose its second-highest selection in the following year’s Draft, as well as $500,000 from its international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. If one of these teams signs two such players, it will also forfeit its third-highest pick.

Red Sox fall under the "All other teams" part.

I'm ok with moving Mayer in right deal. As I have said for a long time, you're not keeping all these prospects. Be bold. Identify who you think will make it and don't be afraid to trade someone like Mayer. I have been skeptical about Mayer for a while now.

15/765 is fun

I hope (sincerely) that he really wants to play there because, IMO when you’re over $500 million, there would be nothing dumber than playing somewhere only because they offered more money.

I feel like the worst thing about Soto going to the Mets is it just kind of feels like the end of elite talent coming to the Red Sox unless they develop them.

These players will just command the kind of money that ownership will always let themselves be outbid for as there's too many teams with insanely deep pockets now. 15/700 being their final offer just means they weren't even close.
