The cap has been supressed artificially due to COVID and escrow. Now that is paid off it’s going up due to past revenues. The economy is definitely going south but I think the cap will still rise aggressively.

Most of the discussions have been around the weak Canadian dollar causing issues for Canadian teams that pay their players US Dollars.

Yep.

Me and Disgruntled (who has disappeared from here recently, hope he's alright) sort of touched on the topic of tariffs a month or two ago and what it could do to the league and, in turn, the salary cap.

In fact, here's an article from today about Gary Bettman discussing how tariffs could affect the league's future revenue.

Hope DHF is all right!?

The forwards situation is fluid, but the D seems very straight forward.

Vlasic - Crevier
Del Mastro - Murphy
Young guy* - Vet RHD
Brodie

* Camp battle between Korchinski, Allan and Kaiser.

I think we only have one spot open for the young LHDs with Del Mastro solidifying his so far this season.

It's good for the competition, but I wish we could have a spot for both Korchinski and Allan in case both are ready.

Maybe Vlasic - Del Mastro could be tried after the TDL and have Crevier bottom pairing with one of those guys?

Still that's probably too green for an NHL GM, Crevier I guess is still more of an unknown than a for sure stable guy.

As for the RHD we bring in, well doesn't really matter, just be better than Brodie, and decent enough to hold down the fort if Murphy gets injured or traded. Maybe decent enough to be an option with Vlasic if needed too. 1 year deal max until Lev & Rinzel time.

I agree on bringing in a vet defensemen as I'd really like more experience back there going into next season and Brodie being what he is. If he is right handed, even better. And hopefully Levshunov or Rinzel will be ready when Connor Murphy inevitably gets hurt.

Forwards (14):
Connor Bedard
Teuvo Teravainen
Frank Nazar
Tyler Bertuzzi
Jason Dickinson
Ilya Mikheyev
Nick Foligno
Landon Slaggert

I think these are the forwards that are most likely going to be on the roster. Leaves room for 6 more.

We really need true centers and two top 6 forwards. I'd like to see us add a 3/4C in the Dickinson mold. A guy who can play physical, take D zone draws and play a matchup type role. Then you have the internal competition between guys like Slaggert/Dach/Greene/Savoie/Lardis/Thompson/Moore for prob a spot or two

Defenseman (7):
Alex Vlasic
Connor Murphy

These are the only two that are for sure locks. Then you have the EDM/Allan/Crevier/Kaiser/Korchinski/Levshunov group. Then Rinzel who you are adding this year. LD probably good with what we have, need a veteran RD but so does everyone else. Levshunov might make it if he has a really good camp, considering the strides I've seen him take in the AHL this year.

Goaltenders (2):
Spencer Knight
Arvid Soderblom

Player salaries will always rise to meet cap % (certainly once an entire existing contract cycle runs its course), bit there could be a bit of an opportunity in the short term to try and incentivize players to sign for similar (or not as big of a raise as they should demand) real dollar values as existing comparables and players (particularly if still team controlled and not UFA) relenting for security/to be not greedy/help the team win. Inevitably, the markets are "reset" though when a few guys start taking more closer to their entitled percentages.

He burned his first year signing during the season. So he’s not waiver eligible to start next season due to lack of games played
Yeah you can be post-ELC but still waiver-exempt depending on the circumstances of ELC signed, ala Crevier this year.

They are set to have 38 million in space for next year with that being still 17 roster players. Giving a UFA crazy dollars just means you're paying an external player the most on your team which can make the guys who have been here want max money too, which I get, but other than that I don't see the huge risk.
Other than Bedard who has the potential to eventually command UFA crazy dollars?

Personally, if Marner and Rantanen want want to come in on matching 7 x $14m contracts I would sign them up. With a potential top six consisting of Bedard, Marner, Rantanen, Misa, Teravainen and Bertuzzi I think the Hawks would be contending for a playoff spot next season. Dickinson, Foligno, Nazar and Slaggert as 2/3 of the bottom six… now we are ready to compete.

I mean yeah I guess but that was when the cap was new. Bedard is not going to be making 13M after his ELC unless he goes for 100+ next year and thats still maybe not enough to get McDavid money.

If Bedard is signing for term, he's going beyond 13M. There's no chance he's making less. Maybe on a 4-year deal you could get him for under 13M. There's no chance if he's signing for 6+ years that he signs for less than 13M though. He'd be leaving so much money on the table.

What has he done to this point to earn 13M? He won’t go long term because he’ll feel he’s got more to give. But the hawks would be really dumb to give him 13x8 this summer.

I was very pro Marner or Rantanen, but giving them 15 mil is now making me hesitant.

Imagine we land Misa, then both him and Bedard could be asking for that number on their next contract, just like what happened with Toronto no?

I would be fine if they had no questions marks. But apparently Rantanen needs a top play driver and we know his defense is iffy, and Marner isn't a tough area player either. Those are both legit questions marks, where you have to consider if the test is worth for mucking up the internal cap situation down the line (again not space, but more a point of reference to match for the young guys).

The problem is, you really don't have too many other options that don't have these kind of question marks.

I would love Vilardi, but Winnipeg has obscene amounts of cap space.

I've had Cuylle's name long circled as an RFA we could offer sheet, but now the Rangers shifted out enough money to easily keep him.

Who else? Boeser is slow.

Ehlers I could see actually. But again Winnipeg and space.

Bennett I would love, but we need wingers. But he's the type of players we should be looking for.

I guess I'm more open to trying to get Marner because he's a good defensive player, and would be pretty good with Bedard in theory (although I want two heavier skilled players on his wing eventually). Cuylle would be an ideal partner for those two.

I think trades might be a better avenue to keep the internal cap in check, and trying to add the type of player we need.

Alex Tuch, Dylan Cozens - these are the guys I'd be trying for ideally. Would need to be three team deals though.

Sorry I'm rambling a little, but it's not clear to me how the forward situation is going to shape up yet.

It's clear we need some skilled, fast, defensively responsible, heavier type wingers.

Edit: actually want do you guys think of trying to trade for Forsberg now? Nashville turned into a complete disaster, maybe theyre open to get some picks and prospects for him now?

He would be ideal. Obviously skilled, plays heavy, not that old either.
Vilardi's injury history scares me. He hasn't played close to a full season yet.

Connor has one more year left with Winnipeg. Maybe he'll tell them he doesn't plan on resigning so he could be an option.

With how lifeless Buffalo has been the last 10+ years, I would most certainly hope Davidson inquires about Peterka as he's an upcoming RFA. As for Cozens, he's making 7.1 million and hasn't hit 50+ points in two seasons. I would hope either the cost isn't much or Buffalo retains.

Chicago can't let Bedard go on strike. He is known player in the team. If his agent knows anything he will sign offer sheet.

A Bedard extension is a moot point until this time next year. Almost guaranteed his agent will want to wait and see if he takes a huge leap in year 3

You think the Hawks would be dumb to give him 13Mx8 if he'd actually sign that? Are you serious? That's 11% of a 115M cap. That's literally how much Toews and Kane signed for coming out of their ELCs, but those guys played on real teams with actual NHL players -- good NHL players at that.
