Yes. I think giving Bedard 13x8 based on his play so far would be an overpay. But to echo @MTU34 it would be foolish to take an extension from his camp currently. As I also mentioned earlier.

You have a chance to lock in Bedard -- who will have been as or more productive than Toews and Kane were in their first two seasons, while playing on an NHL team in name only -- to a contract that would take him through most of his prime at 11% of the cap or less and that's somehow dumb. Alrighty then.

I don't think Bedard signs for 8 years regardless because it's bad business from his end. Doesn't matter if he were coming off back-to-back 65 point seasons or back-to-back 150 point seasons. He'd be leaving money on the table. I'd be shocked to see him sign for more than 5 years.

The linemates thing needs to be put to rest. He’s fourth in goal scoring. And tied for first in points with a 30 year old teravainen

Some of you guys are completely unhinged as fans. Deep down, I really do respect your fanaticism, but when you are trying to pass it off as being based in rational thinking, it grows awfully tiresome quickly. I think I’m about done with anything other than the GDT today.
I got news for you. They aren't just unhinged as fans.

Your takes are only the best of the best.

Everyone includes me. I'm just not the one currently arguing against signing an elite young player to a max-term deal that would have him making <10% of the cap through half the contract.

Acting like paying a guy 13 for 8 years after two 60 points seasons is a no brainer is wild. He’s going to get way better. The team will get way better. He’s not worth 13 right now and he probably won’t be for a few seasons.

Again, you're too focused on the AAV and not the % of cap. The AAV doesn't matter as much as the % of the cap.

Okay. Swap the money for the percent of the cap. It’s the same thing. He’s not worth 10% of the cap now and he won’t be for a couple seasons.

You can argue whether he's worth that or not today. The point was and is, if Bedard is signing for term, he's not signing for less. You have to pay for potential to an extent. The good news is Bedard is very likely to reach his.

From the team's perspective, if you can get Bedard signed to a contract that would have him paid less than 10% of the cap through most of his prime, you do that every single day, even if you don't think he's worth 12/13% right now.

I understand the concept. It likely doesn’t matter anyway. He hasn’t been good enough to get the money he wants at the term the team wants. Which means it’ll probably be shorter term.

There is no term that would pay him enough money. The NHL's cap system is designed to benefit teams exclusively, as long as they aren't signing 28/29-year-old UFAs to max term deals into their late 30s.

Look at McDavid. Signed an 8-year deal for the 2018-19 season at 15.92% of the cap and he's basically been underpaid from the moment he signed the deal. He's certainly now criminally underpaid.

Elite players need to take the Matthews approach (Bedard's agent too) if they want to maximize the money they can make. You take 4/5 year deals at the highest AAV you can get.

Offer sheet Knies, sign Ehlers and a veteran RHD. Move on from Kurashev and Reichel

Knies-Bedard-TT
Ehlers-Nazar-Bertuzzi
Foligno-Dickenson-Donato
Dach-Slaggert-Mikeyev/Veleno

Vlasic-Veteran RHD
EDM-Murphy
KK-Crevier

Knight
Soderblom

I’d give reichel a month or so next year before moving on. See if he does anything if the offseason to better his game. He has slightly improved this year over last. He’s smarter with the puck and better on defense. I think he is better than veleno at this point.

Kurashev sure. See ya.

I like Ehlers goal scoring and skating, but I would still like to see some more dirty goal scoring jam which is why they are keeping Donato.......Knies makes sense with that power forward frame and North-South skating.
