2025-26 Roster…too soon?

The cap has been supressed artificially due to COVID and escrow. Now that is paid off it’s going up due to past revenues. The economy is definitely going south but I think the cap will still rise aggressively.

Most of the discussions have been around the weak Canadian dollar causing issues for Canadian teams that pay their players US Dollars.

Yep.

Me and Disgruntled (who has disappeared from here recently, hope he's alright) sort of touched on the topic of tariffs a month or two ago and what it could do to the league and, in turn, the salary cap.

In fact, here's an article from today about Gary Bettman discussing how tariffs could affect the league's future revenue.

Hope DHF is all right!?

The forwards situation is fluid, but the D seems very straight forward.

Vlasic - Crevier
Del Mastro - Murphy
Young guy* - Vet RHD
Brodie

* Camp battle between Korchinski, Allan and Kaiser.

I think we only have one spot open for the young LHDs with Del Mastro solidifying his so far this season.

It's good for the competition, but I wish we could have a spot for both Korchinski and Allan in case both are ready.

Maybe Vlasic - Del Mastro could be tried after the TDL and have Crevier bottom pairing with one of those guys?

Still that's probably too green for an NHL GM, Crevier I guess is still more of an unknown than a for sure stable guy.

As for the RHD we bring in, well doesn't really matter, just be better than Brodie, and decent enough to hold down the fort if Murphy gets injured or traded. Maybe decent enough to be an option with Vlasic if needed too. 1 year deal max until Lev & Rinzel time.

I agree on bringing in a vet defensemen as I'd really like more experience back there going into next season and Brodie being what he is. If he is right handed, even better. And hopefully Levshunov or Rinzel will be ready when Connor Murphy inevitably gets hurt.

Forwards (14):
Connor Bedard
Teuvo Teravainen
Frank Nazar
Tyler Bertuzzi
Jason Dickinson
Ilya Mikheyev
Nick Foligno
Landon Slaggert

I think these are the forwards that are most likely going to be on the roster. Leaves room for 6 more.

We really need true centers and two top 6 forwards. I'd like to see us add a 3/4C in the Dickinson mold. A guy who can play physical, take D zone draws and play a matchup type role. Then you have the internal competition between guys like Slaggert/Dach/Greene/Savoie/Lardis/Thompson/Moore for prob a spot or two

Defenseman (7):
Alex Vlasic
Connor Murphy

These are the only two that are for sure locks. Then you have the EDM/Allan/Crevier/Kaiser/Korchinski/Levshunov group. Then Rinzel who you are adding this year. LD probably good with what we have, need a veteran RD but so does everyone else. Levshunov might make it if he has a really good camp, considering the strides I've seen him take in the AHL this year.

Goaltenders (2):
Spencer Knight
Arvid Soderblom

Player salaries will always rise to meet cap % (certainly once an entire existing contract cycle runs its course), bit there could be a bit of an opportunity in the short term to try and incentivize players to sign for similar (or not as big of a raise as they should demand) real dollar values as existing comparables and players (particularly if still team controlled and not UFA) relenting for security/to be not greedy/help the team win. Inevitably, the markets are "reset" though when a few guys start taking more closer to their entitled percentages.

He burned his first year signing during the season. So he’s not waiver eligible to start next season due to lack of games played
Yeah you can be post-ELC but still waiver-exempt depending on the circumstances of ELC signed, ala Crevier this year.

They are set to have 38 million in space for next year with that being still 17 roster players. Giving a UFA crazy dollars just means you're paying an external player the most on your team which can make the guys who have been here want max money too, which I get, but other than that I don't see the huge risk.
Other than Bedard who has the potential to eventually command UFA crazy dollars?

Personally, if Marner and Rantanen want want to come in on matching 7 x $14m contracts I would sign them up. With a potential top six consisting of Bedard, Marner, Rantanen, Misa, Teravainen and Bertuzzi I think the Hawks would be contending for a playoff spot next season. Dickinson, Foligno, Nazar and Slaggert as 2/3 of the bottom six… now we are ready to compete.
