Confirmed Trade: [VGK/NYR] Reilly Smith (50% retained) for Brendan Brisson and SJS' 2025 3rd round pick

I fail to see how this is anything other than a good deal for the Rangers. Maybe Vegas exceeds the Rangers in total games played from this point forward (on Smith's current expiring contract). It's of course possible that Brisson gets 5 games or less the rest of his career and the 3rd round pick the Rangers got amounts to no better than that. In that case, Vegas got a good depth player for basically no one that plays NHL games.

On the other hand, I think there's a chance that Brisson could bounce back and be an NHL regular (it's far from a long shot just because he had a bad season, probably like 40/60), and then an early third has value. I would've taken like a mid 3rd for Smith, so getting an early 3rd and a prospect with some NHL potential is a great return.

Can Brisson play center or he's only going to make it in the NHL as a winger?
He will not bounce back with the Rangers. They insist oh hiring coaches who refuse to give young players a chance to develop. They should move him for a vet who might get to play.

K.

feels like a Brisson - Parssinen - Kaliyev 3rd line is a mini vegas misfits line. Is Laviolette the kind of coach to explore that?

Brisson is probably only worth a 2-way deal. He's 23, has 20 games left on his ELC and has 8 career NHL points. Aside from being a late 1st five years ago, hard to see much there at the moment.

I don’t think acquiring Brisson is some coup, but the Silver Knights have been anemic offensively, and the two-best +/- on the team are +2 and +1. I would think his weak season could be attributed in-part to the team as a whole being a disaster.
The team is a disaster because Vegas has traded every single viable prospect they’ve ever had.

Oh I don't mind the trades for either Tampa or Vegas, just funny teams are getting the band back together

Recognition that this late in the season the TDL guys don't always fit in quickly enough to do good, and sometimes mess up the chemistry.

Been wondering whether McCrimmon will try to bring Marchessault back too, since his overpriced acquisition wasn't a winner for Nashville and they may want out of it.

I get your point, but it's basically one bad year and he's only 23. Every other year has been sort of reasonable. He might only be like a 13F or 14F, but good organizational depth, at least. Hard to believe this year becomes the trend. Players sometimes just have bad years (maybe he's injured or having some personal issue or whatever). And there's a chance he could bounce back and makes the NHL as like a middle six forward.
He will be an ahl lifer

Brisson just can’t hold onto an NHL spot. He’s been given several opportunities now. He gets pushed around in the league. Pretty easily too.

He’s got to get much stronger still. Maybe if he can play with two bigger forwards who create space?? He’s officially hit the bust stage though.clearly isn’t a C btw.

That's a hell of a return for NYR, although Brisson has kinda stagnated this year.

Not even a little bit surprised that Smith is going back to Vegas. Dude basically pouted for the past 2 seasons after they traded him.

Edit: man I didn't realize how bad of a season Brisson was having. Still a win for the Rangers but damn, 19 points in 45 games as a 22/23 year old AHLer sucks. The Rangers better hope he bounces back.
Kind of annoyed that he made a toddler like stink about being traded out of Vegas, and in the end he got his way.

...So early 3rds are basically 2nd rounders now and late 2nds are basically 3rd rounders?
