Player Discussion: 2024 Vezina Winner Connor Hellebuyck

well if they have helle on the roster, he's good enough to keep them around a bubble PO team. things can certainly change, however going off what dreger said recently there's no appetite to rebuild either.

this team longed for good goaltending for years, they have Helle under contract they will try and compete and hopefully make a run to entice him in staying.

if they're out of it around the TDL, then i can see him being moved for sure (ie: like other pending UFAs such as Ladd, Copp). Same w/ Scheifele and Wheeler. however, i do not foresee them trading all of the players in the off-season. and it's not like they have commonly just sold their UFA-1s. for instance '15-'16 they went in with both Buff & Ladd. 1 stayed, 1 refused a contract and got dealt at the TDL. could play out like that if they're out of the POs at the 24TDL.

I think in the case of Ladd and Buff Chevy probably had a decent idea if they were open to a deal. I am wondering if he knows if any of the current three are planning on leaving does Kevin have the balls to Gaudreau them (own rental) anyways?

I mean what do we do if we’re in the playoff race next season, I think we still have to sell don’t we? Having any of those three walk for free sets us back and we are not a contender as is anyways.

Either way I guess we will find out.

If you go into the year with Helle it defeats the purpose of a rebuild imo. Even if u did trade scheifele and /or wheeler. So I'm guessing folks want to trade Helle this offseason?

I am not a fan of using own rentals until the end of next season if they are of the quality of our top three pending UFA’s. We need to get something back for each one of them IMO. I look at this as our last kick at the cat with our current roster unless all three resign.

To me,

Helle I think will stay.

PLD I lean towards being dealt. Not bc they want to rebuild but bc he won't commit long term.

Wheeler no idea. They didn't want to retain last year, maybe they do this year since it's one season. Not sure. He has 50+pts this year, and whenever he was out other players couldn't produce in the top 6.

Scheifele - well if PLD is gone I think they might need or want to keep him with no suitable top 6 Cs currently on the roster. And I'd say it's unlikely PLD returns one.

Bowness I don't think signed up to rebuild. Apparently He turned down offers from rebuilding teams. Maybe management changes its view, however from what has been posted it doesn't seem that way as of yes. And then of course TNSE staying loyal to their word perhaps.

If Helle wants to stay and we retain one of the two centres that changes things. We’ll see how it plays out.

This is the Jets (primarily Helle) vs NHL rolling 10 game average of sv% (from game 10 onward)

Blue over orange means better than league average at the time the Jets played their game.

League sv% for the entire season is 0.9

Edit should rephrase... NHL average is 10 goalies/data points or a 5 game moving average

I had a great time last night. Entertaining game.
I’m Hellys biggest advocate, but he can’t let the first and fourth goals happen. We need him to be better than that. He needs to steal us the next one. I know he’s capable. He’s far from the problem but I as a former goalie strived to steal games. He’ll get the job done.
Go jets go!

If Vegas can beat us with our old back-up goalie in net, what does that tell us about Hellebuyck ???

honestly, I might be way off base here, but when vegas played winnipeg back in 2017 (or so,) hellebuyck was giving up some goals and not playing greatly. probably should have played brossoit (a wee bit more if he did even play)

with that said, knuck if you buck has been playing pretty dang well thus far in this series, fortunately

I agree I think he needs to steel one but I am hoping it’s the 6th or 7th game. :naughty:

Was listening to Kenny and Renny and they were debating a good point.

Helly has been a Vezina goalie. Helly has been very good in the regular season for the Jets over numerous years. Helly has been a workhorse for the Jets, but....

Has Helly every won a playoff series by actually being the better goalie in a series? Have the Jets ever won a series because of Helly standing on his head? Is Helly actually a playoff goalie? Have the Jets just overplayed Helly in the regular season so he is just out of gas every year in the playoffs?

Last night, I noticed Vegas was positionally sound and making it a lot easier on Brossoit. We were scrambling around Hellebuyck and leaving way too many gaps between our D and the Vegas forwards.

I think even the framing of the debate is kind of f***ed up. Right now I think he's below 900 for the series or very close anyways, and people are saying he needs to steal us a game. How about he just play average as a start?

(ran the math and feel free to correct but he's right at 900)

He stole the Oilers series and was better then Rinne in 17-18. Other than that I can't think of any that he was clearly the better goalie.

If he's been overplayed, that may be at Helly's insistence. There were reports some time back that Helly could be a real pain in the team's butt, and I suspect that comes from raising a stink if he doesn't get the number of games he feels entitled to. Three coaches now have overplayed him so maybe the message from above is to just give him what he wants. Same as the message to just give 55 and 26 whatever they want. Team goals be damned, God forbid we ruffle those feathers.

No one should come above the team. If Helley wants to play 75 games a season plus playoffs then you better not fade in the post season like your iron deficient

Series that Hellebuyck has been superior to the his counterpart:

2018 vs Minnesota Wild (Dubnyk)
2018 vs Nashville Predators (Rinne)
2019 vs St.Louis Blues (Binnington)
2021 vs Edmonton Oilers (Smith)

Series that Hellebuyck has been inferior to his counterpart:

2018 Vegas Golden Knights (Fleury)
2021 Montreal Canadiens (Price)

Considering Helle played above average against Montreal, Vegas just seems to have his number. Goaltending was arguably the main reason the Jets beat Edmonton in 2021. I've never Kenny and Renny, but they don't seem to take 5 minutes to research Hellebuyck's stats, or get their facts right for that matter.
