If the Jets are rebuilding they should move him and hopefully obtain MULTIPLE 1st round picks. He is a rarely available top end goaltender and I firmly believe he is our greatest asset in Winnipeg Jets 2.0 history. A team like the Kings would pay a Kings ransom for a goaltender like him since they have awful goaltending. They were smart to acquire Korpisalo.

Cheveldayoffs employment in my opinion depends on what he can acquire in trade to facilitate a rebuild. Why fire him if he can obtain great assets in return?

With one year until free agency it'll be difficult to get more than one 1st rounder (not including the player assets coming back) unless Hellebuyck doesn't care too much where he goes. The Kings might pay to get him early but you won't get a ton of picks and prospects.

Goalies also don't usually get big returns via trade. The league is moving towards just needing average goaltending to be a contender so we're going to have to temper any trade expectations.

If the Jets let it be known that they were taking offers on Helly, most of the league would be in on it, and the offers would be crazy IMO.

Any gm could obtain great assets for the players that would be traded

It’s what the gm has done before that should make him lose his job

Great from Murat about Hellebuyck's advocacy for mental health. A couple of good passages:

At one point, he asks me to imagine the difference between a player overcoming their struggles when the whole city has their back compared to when they receive sarcastic applause.

That’s part of it — having the lights on us all the time. And that’s always my message to the media. Sometimes, when you guys are writing negative articles, remember our side of it — where we’re trying and we’re working on things. Just have a sense that we’re not just giving up. And I think it’s so important to relay that message. Because I know, when we’re in the locker room with you guys all the time — or even our fans cheering when we get a shot on net — little things like that, that does add up to us.

I think that’s why I get along with Flats (Wade Flaherty) so well, our goalie coach. Every now and then I’ll just let it go. I’ll let my emotions go to him and I’ll just be sitting there and I’ll just be devastated after a game or just mind-blown, and I don’t know what to think. I’ll just sit there. It will take me 15 to 20 minutes and he’ll sit down with me and we’ll talk it through.

Friedman on 32 Thoughts giving major props to Helle's play this weekend on a difficult b2b on the Florida trip (as well as Bowness going with him). Labels Hellebuyck as the most important goalie to his team in the NHL. Has him in the pool of Hart runner-ups with Hughes, Sorokin, Pastrnak etc. Both he and Marek beleive he will be in the mix as the highest paid current goalie in the nhl, excluding Price's contract.

Hellebuyck is the absolute last player the Jets should be trying to trade. He is really the first superstar goalie the city has ever seen. Helly is turning 30, and still in his prime.

Helly is going to be difficult to keep IMO, but so much depends on just how comfortable he is being here.

7 years at say $10,000,000 per being offered in Winnipeg and having that potential to make that exact amount elsewhere, does he stay?

Helly is the #! question this summer... signing Helly or not will dictate what the Jets do with everyone else.

He definitely is the last player the Jets should be dealing, however, if they are going to rebuild it is imperative that they acquire assets for him instead of losing him to free agency as he is possibly the best player on the team.

That makes no sense.

"We have arguably the best goalie in the NHL right now, but we need to plan for the future and (hypothetically), he may not want to sign here at the end of his contract, so let's just get rid of him for prospects and draft picks."

It makes more sense than having him walk for nothing. If Connor Hellebuyck isn't interested in re-signing here, they should acquire assets for the rebuild.

What happens with Hellebuyck will really decide if we're still going for it or it's time to rebuild.
agreed

which is why i do not think they will be rebuilding for the 23-24 season. they still have a top-end goaltender under contract, they'll still go for it and try to win one while they still have him. this team outside of Helle is a .900 SV% through their history, they'll hold on to Helle till the end imo. Chevy is the 2nd longest tenured GM in the league and has 0 to show for it. if they go through the rebuild cycle/phase, it'll be another few years (maybe more) of accomplishing nothing prior to they make some PO noise so perhaps still go for it while you still got the high-end goaltender. & then hopefully he re-signs.

if they're still going for it id expect scheifele to still be here, wheeler too. PLD maybe they handle it similar to Copp rather than Trouba - if he does not sign long-term.

I think It’s all going to come down to if he has faith chevy will win.

Hard to say how it plays out but I agree Hellebuyck is the critical asset. I wonder if Chevy has the stones to Johnny Hockey any of his big 3 assets next season?

I hope it doesn't come to that, but I would guess it would come down to how secure Chevy feels in his job. Does he have to have success now, or is Chipman willing to give him the security to start on a rebuild that might take most of the next decade?

yup.
i just don't see them moving helle. this team had been desperate for strong goaltending and they got it. they'll keep him for the year, do their best to make a run, & then hope he signs.

does helle want to compete for a cup? is he chasing $ at this point? is he ok with being on basically a middling NHL team? :dunno:. all factor into his decision.

but if you keep helle, you're probably going for it right? so the move would be to retain 1-2 of your top-6Cs since there's 0 surefire replacements internally, or obtain via FA or trade.

FA market looks pretty thin.... we've been basically an average team w/ schefiele-pld down the middle the last 3 years. how much would we improve if we replace one of them with these guys below (no idea what the trade market is for top-Cs). or Lowry as a top-6C :dunno:
