Kelenic was a 3 WAR/162 player who was/is one of the younger regular starters in MLB and they basically gave him away to dump the contract of a starting pitcher who wasn’t even bad and is off to a great start this year.

Not a perfect player but that deal was terrible.

You can shave about a win off that projection based on his fWAR but regardless he was a negative value player before last year and was worth 0.2 fWAR in 79 games following his hot April. It’s easy to see why they soured on him. Currently their two best offensive players to start the year have been Canzone and Haniger who are their replacements for Kelenic and Teo. Plus Raley (OF) and Garver (DH) have been cold but should provide better production than Kelenic over the course of the year.

I just don’t buy Kelenic being a very good player.

Bullshit. How do you figure he's "one of the best defenders in the league"? He's a fat slob in a professional sports league.
I hope this isn't a serious post but in case it is, Kirk is one of the better defensive catchers in the league. He blocks the ball very well and more importantly, his pitch framing is one of the best in the league. His pitch framing at the bottom of the zone is elite.

I love how all the stats suggest he's a fantastic defender, and anyone who watches Jays games can tell how great he is at blocking balls and stealing strikes, and someone really thinks "No, actually, he's fat" is a solid counterargument.

"The only thing he's good at defending is a cake. By eating it! lololololol!"

After last night's games, Kirk is now tied for 1st in catcher DRS (with Raleigh) and leads all catchers in Def

And Chapman is off to an awful start.
i just had a look at his game log stats. Ouch.

One monster game (game 2) and then very very little.

It will be interesting what Chapman's and kiner-Falefa's stats look like at the end of the season, but so far i like what i'm seeing from IKF.

Kirk's a solid catcher. Good catching numbers last year too
Kirk was a gold glove finalist last year, finished 7th in all of baseball in Def and 2nd in DRS for catchers.

Heim led all catchers in Def (which is arguably the best current measure for a catcher because of all of the different elements it encompasses) and won the gold glove.

Raleigh arguably should have been the third finalist over Rutschman, but the difference wasn't really big enough to complain about (Vasquez and Rogers could also have been candidates for 3rd in the two-horse race).

Something to keep in mind is that Kirk would have led the AL if he played more (having a quality catcher in Jansen actually hinders his ability to win the gold glove)

Man, varsho blows :(

He has a noodle arm for sure though and can’t run the bases to save his life.
Are you kidding about the baserunning? He seems above average at that aspect. Had a great instance of it last night.

I want Varsho to succeed so i'd rather prop him up than put him down. He has the tools and the work ethic to be a solid player. I thought he was good yesterday.

Some oddities so far.

IKF is playing 3rd significantly better than Clement so far.

Chapman is pulling his best last year defensively. He's a mid-pack defender by Def who is leading DRS. IKF has a higher Def but lower DRS.

Varsho finished 32nd overall in baserunning last year. He was also arguably the best defensive outfielder in all of baseball.

If he can get on base more often, he'll only do better.

He was referring to Kirk with the baserunning and arm stuff.

Varsho doesn't have a strong arm, but it's one of the best in the league because it's accurate, quick, and he gets to the ball so quickly.

Remember everyone saying Varsho this and that…. He’s f***ing garbage and always has been. The fact we made a trade HOPING he might be able to hit one day at the age of 28 is beyond disgraceful . Management should be f***ing fired.

Kirk is up .5 ft/sec over last year so far.

I know, but we also need him to hit a little. I don’t like what I am seeing of him at the plate so far. very little hard contact, and everything on the ground. It’s fine if we had a murderer’s row for a lineup, but we don’t. I really like him and want him to start hitting much better, like we all know he can.

The biggest thing about his season so far is his ridiculous IFFB rate. That's usually an indicator of a timing issue (which could be mechanical). Fixing that will improve a lot of other things (he's currently hitting the ball on the ground 3% more often but having 44.4% of your AB leading to K or IFFB leads to absolutely garbage stats).
