I think he might have caught the ball when his foot was still on the bag, then the momentum of the catch pulled him off the base.

I believe thats what required for the out at 1st, not having to hold it as the runner crosses.

He didn’t actually need rest the other day. It was an opportunity to give Vogelbach some PAs against an RHP. Likewise today was a day to get Schneider some PAs against a lefty and for KK to sit. He doesn’t actually need the rest 3 games into the season but situationally management is looking to see where guys fit.
