Not much to write about in a game when you know you're so far above the competition. You just hope of course you win, no one gets injured, and you don't get into bad habits. I'd say they accomplished that.

Nice to see Perreault finally have a good outing. Not really about the goals (the 2nd one was sweet though) but it's the first game where he's looked like himself, finding open ice, moving the puck quickly, and generating dangerous chances. It also took him a bit to settle into the NCAA, so hopefully he's found his footing headed into the medal rounds.

Moore had another good game. He adds a nice element to the Gauthier line when he's on it.

Gauthier has been good in the tournament but I hope he's about to unlock another level. His shooting % is putrid right now, which isn't the norm for a guy who can wire it like him. If he even experiences a slight regression to his mean, he'll be in for multiple goals in the medal rounds.

Casey looked like himself again after looking like he was still feeling the flu against Slovakia. Snuggerud seemed to still be battling it a bit today.

The Fortescue / Casey pairing was excellent today. Most of us expected an '05 defensive defenseman to make the team (whether it was Fortescue, Fischer, etc.), even if it was a tournament earlier than you'd like. Fortescue has acquitted himself quite well.

Whatever practice time they have left should be 100% devoted to special teams.

Onward!

Really happy. My first goal is always to play a game for a medal. Check.

The d positioning has been much better the last few games. Beautiful.

One miniscule nit pick. Our guys see a play that they think is going to be there….then it isn’t….and we try to force it thru anyway rather than resetting. It’s probably a product of having so many high-end offensive players w crazy confidence. Obviously they can do things I’d never dream of so they try shit….Carle has said he doesn’t want to take the sticks out of their hands and he’s certainly given them freedom. Like I said: pretty miniscule nitpick.

well done all around so far.

I wonder what the lines will look like for tomorrow?

Up front, I think our best bet is to run our lines from yesterday. The middle 6 seems pretty set, but there is probably some question if we should go back to the top line we rolled out in the last two games. I think Oliver Moore's play, and his subsequent impact on that top line, is deserving of another chance alongside Gauthier and McGroarty. Moore's done a terrific job using his speed to jump into open space, and has been great crashing the net and on the cycle.

In those two games:
- Gauthier 1g 5p +4 16 shots
- McGroarty 4g 4p +4 12 shots
- Moore 1g 3p +4 6 shots

Some of the scoring & shooting from McGroarty and Gauthier came on the PP, but it's still a total of 34 shots in 2 games. And it's not like they haven't dominated at ES - by my count, they contributed for 5 ES goals in the last two games.

I also really liked the way Snuggerud fit in with Nelson and Finley yesterday. He's the type of guy who has the ability to create a lot of his own shots, and with his power and skill I think we'll see him feast against the opposition's depth players. Having a weapon like that on the 4th line will create matchup nightmares for Finland.

On defense, I like the pairings, but I haven't been thrilled with the usage.

Hutson 23:03
Chesley 19:20
Buium 18:55
Fortescue 17:33
Casey 15:39
Rinzel 15:13
Pohlkamp 9:29

15:39 TOI isn't nearly enough ice time for Casey, Rinzel is the only regular who has averaged less ice time.

I'd roll with Fortescue and Casey as my #1 5v5 pair, especially if they aren't gonna play Casey on the PP. They were far and away our best pair yesterday.

Here's what I would hope to see tomorrow:

McGroarty - Gauthier - Moore
Howard - Nazar - Brindley
Perreault - Smith - Leonard
Finley - Nelson - Snuggerud
Hayes

Fortescue - Casey
Hutson - Chesley
Buium - Rinzel
Pohlkamp

Augustine
Fowler

All in all, I have to give credit to the coaching staff for putting together a solid group of lines & pairs. I usually have much more gripes about the way this is all put together. You may argue that it would be tough to put together bad lines with such a talented group, but we've seen it. Remember when we kept Zegras on the 4th line for most of the 2020 tournament, and he still scored 9 points in 5 games?

Yep, Moore has looked excellent the past few games and the lines better balanced because of it.

Wasn't it Sean Kuraly in 2013 that got put on the top line & shit clicked and took off from there? Something small like that changed the entire dynamic around and they won gold...I have had a lot to drink over the years so I might be fuzzy on it being Kuraly lol...

I think Kuraly was centering the 4th line. I believe they put Vesey up with Gaudreau and Miller by the end and we just rolled everyone.

Which Fischer are you talking about as a potential '05?

Obviously this lineup is stacked but I think we'll look back at this team even better than we do now. Truly a god squad of talent. Anything short of Gold would be a disappointment.. and I normally hate to have that kind of expectation.

Not Bonney, but I suspect he was talking about the NTDP one.

All signs point to Augustine starting tomorrow? Everyone else would be surprised if it's not him in net, right?
Surprised, yes.

Shocked, no. Fowler is very good, and if he won the net throughout the tournament it wouldn't have been a huge surprise. What would make it a surprise now is that Augustine has outplayed him so far.

But you never know in these short tournaments. Augustine may not be 100%.

I have to say that this has been the most boring WJC ever. It may be big ice or direction where hockey has been going for years now. Probably both and when you add that Russia is not there it is not so good. Only thing that could give something is if we can get that rematch against Sweden.

Im not sure what it is either. Maybe Russia and Canada not having powerhouses. I think the final should be amazing.

For me, I missed the NYE game between Canada and US which was usually an exciting game to watch. I also don't like the games played on the big ice. Additionally, while I understand why Russia isn't playing, it does take another skilled team out of the tournament.

Always the same story against Finland. I knew this. Good luck to bronze medal game.
