WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

Do you think any of these London Knights get a sniff:

Bonk, Cowan, Barkey, Dickinson, George?
Don’t think Barkey or Dickinson have much of a shot. They’d need to have a monster start to the season to have legit shots.

Bonk, Cowan and George I think have a chancr though. Bonk and Cowan due to draft pedigree and George because of his two-way game.

2025 is when i’d expect all the ‘05’s, and Dickinson to have a legit shot, to be frank.

Agreed. 2025 could have 4 Knights!

There must be a better reason than funding for not having a summer camp; you would have to think WJC U-20 which is (outside of best on best) Hockey Canada’s premier tournament would take priority over Women’s u18 in terms of funding if they are having a camp and the WJC team is not

It's not about doing what makes sense from a hockey or interest standpoint. They want things quiet regarding the WJC as the people who are loudest about what they think happened in 2018 don't have attention spans to keep up their outrage, but they also want the mild good publicity of funding the fledgling U18 women's team/tournament. There's obviously money to fly in the U20 players and hold the camp at Hockey Canada's own facility in Calgary.

If there are still people that are upset over that then they will never be satisfied. The entire board was replaced, a new chairman and and president were named, and the entire 2018 team has been provisionally suspended. Eventually the world has to be stop being run by trial by Twitter or Shireen Ahmed.

Forwards will be interesting. Centre depth looks stacked with really strong two-way players; there won’t be much of a need for line-matching, although Danielson will likely be tasked with smothering the likes of Cooley. Someone will need to step up with Bedard, Wright and Fantilli unlikely to be released - but I think Benson and Savoie can be those guys who are near the tournament scoring lead.

Benson-Savoie-Wood/Yager
Goyette-Beck-Firkus
Barlow-Danielson-Dumais/Ritchie
Minten-Celebrini-Wood/Yager
Geekie/Ritchie/Dumais

Tempting not to go with an all Winnip…. Wenatchee first line. Geekie probably gets a spot if he has an ok season based on chemistry. Wood and Celebrini renewing their amazing link up from the u18 would be nice to see. There’s no Bédard here and Sweden and the USA might have more pure talent up front but the amount of two way forwards is immense. Hopefully they pick a coach that fits a group like that, like the Tourigny team in 2020/21 that was able to suffocate opponents with neutral zone positioning and forecheck.
Defense comes together really nicely. Funny but not surprising that not a single 05 was invited.

Korchinski-Warren
Pickering-Luneau
Mateychuk-Lamoureaux
Nelson
Again I don’t think this group will be as good as Sweden. But pairing a puck mover with a stay at home option is a good formula.

As for goalies I was slightly surprised to see that Bjarnssson was not invited. Can’t really get a read on who has the inside track

Basically everyone I had on my list was invited, except for Josh Filmon.

Heidt and Cristall are certainty more talented than several players that were invited, but given their age and concerns some scouts have raised I'm not entirely surprised.
Interesting that it notes that Fantilli is invited but not participating but nothing about Wright. I'd think that there is a better chance that Wright is available than there is that Fantilli shows up.

Left sidetop 3 look pretty set...you think there's any chance Buchinger sneaks on to the team?

I really like Buchinger but I am pretty sure the team will go for bigger guys and some mix of the top-6 I laid out, maybe shifting around the puck movers and more defensive guys. Maybe if he has a fantastic season he pushes Nelson out of the 7D spot.

Buchinger sounds like a very good prospect for the Blues and I'm also a huge fan of Nelson, his hair and that puck incident already has him in mythical status for all time.

I would be surprised if this team wins Gold. I'm no expert, but it's extremely difficult to 3 peat especially in this era where Canada is not as dominant as they used to be. It helps that Russia isn't participating though.

They have already won two. Winning the next one has nothing to do with the difficulty of a threepeat. It's just another tournament. You are engaged in Gamblers fallacy.

As a Jackets fan I hope that the added mass will help Mateychuk to earn his spot in the top-6. Sounds like he's 5'11-200 currently.

Another season with Moose Jaw will allow Mateychuk to hone his defensive skills and adjust to the added muscle needed to play professionally. He is listed as 6-foot-1, 188 pounds but said during development camp in July that he is about 200 pounds.

"I tried to put on the right type of weight where I still feel powerful and still feel like my skating is really good," he said. "It's been a really good start to that."
Mateychuk said he is is spurred by not being named to the roster for gold medal-winning Canada in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.

"It's definitely a big motivator," he said. "You want to show them that you're ready to take on that role with them and be a contributing factor."

Exactly what everyone expected...

Strong 19 year old D.
Amazingly talented but YOUNG "O".

We'll need great goaltending, along with the D, to fend of the U.S. - build from the net out and hope the 18 year old kids can score at a 19 year old tournament.

Of course, if (2 of) Wright or Fantilli or Bedard play, it could be a tournament changer.

Either way, I think we surprise to the upside - some posters seem to be writing us off.

We'll need great goaltending

I can't wait until puck drop on Boxing Day when Gord Miller will start with: "Every time Canada has won gold in Europe, they have had the tournament's top goaltender as voted by the IIHF Directorate."

I do think DiVincentiis has the ability to be that guy. When he gets on a hot streak, he's very tough to beat, and we only need him to perform at that level for ~6 games.

In terms of the above list, I'd like to see Ty Nelson get at least an extra d-man role to be able to slot in on the PP. We may need his big shot at some point. He also hits like a truck.
