WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

FWIW, Luneau is having a fantastic camp, like good enough that it isn’t out of the question that he plays a few games with the Ducks (though I still wouldn’t say it’s likely). He had to have played 25 minutes in yesterday’s preseason game. He should be a horse at the WJC.

Seems like this team is going to possibly lose guys like Danielson and Benson, they’re at least getting 9 games. Even a guy like Poitras looks like he’s going to get 9 games with Boston. Outside of Wright and Beck the forward core is going to be completely different.

Update to my projection from a few months ago. I'm assuming that none of Bedard, Fantilli, or Wright return.

Team looks great, but you need to find a spot for Poitras at this point. As of today, he’s already looking like a top-6 NHLer.

Our incredible depth of two-way centres and very strong defense, where Korchinski and Luneau and Mateychuk all already look like they are ready to play top-4 minutes in the NHL this year, is gonna be key to neutralizing Team USA’s offense.

We have so many great R-shot options, it's going to make for a competitive camp. Especially considering many of these players play similar styles/roles. Perhaps Savoie doesn't make it due to his shoulder injury?

There are other teams in the tournament:laugh:if you pick a team to beat one specific opponent in a tournament you end up with a result like USA on the 2016 World Cup
Our team is top-to-bottom leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else.

USA looks to have an absolutely lethal offense this year, hence my comment!

I really hope Savoie is not out for nearly that long, but I haven’t read an update recently.

It seems highly unlikely as of now that he would be out anywhere close to that long, but he wasn't at yesterdays morning skate for BUF, and hasn't practiced with them at all during camp. Regardless, I think he'll be healthy come WJC. It's nice that there should be some competition amongst 2004s for the last few spots. It will come down to who has the best next couple months.

Minten could make the leafs this year. If he plays well tonight he’s gonna get some of those 9 games I think.

Mateychuk sent back by Columbus. He was one of their better players in the preseason and honestly played well enough to get an NHL look but too many bodies and no need to rush. If he continues to play the way he did in the preseason and build some momentum before the WJC, Canada will be adding a minute munching stud.

Dumais is on IR, there is a small bit of banter wondering if Columbus will do what Seattle did with Wright to get him some AHL time before heading back to Halifax

Luneau is on Anaheim's opening day roster, but there is suspicion it might not be for too long.

It's funny, going into the year I thought Minten would be a bubble guy for the WJC team. But the fact that he made the Leafs is probably a sign that he should definitely be on the team if Toronto ends up releasing him.

A 6'2'' guy coming together can suddenly be amazing; he's had an incredible last six months. I think he sticks with the leafs, they need a 3rd line center too much and there is no other option cap-wise. Yes, he'll hit the wall at some point, that's fine as long as he's ready come playoffs time.

I guess Misa we'll be creeping back in the discussion after all these early promotions.

U-20 Canadian players on NHL opening night rosters/IR:
  1. Connor Bedard
  2. Adam Fantilli
  3. Zach Benson
  4. Matthew Savoie (IR)
  5. Fraser Minten
  6. Easton Cowan
  7. Jordan Dumais (IR)
  8. Tristan Luneau
  9. Kevin Korchinski
  10. Matthew Poitras
I suspect Cowan will be sent back shortly. I wouldn't be surprised if Dumais and Luneau played a few games and were sent to the AHL for a "conditioning" stint prior to the WJHC. Hard to say what will happen with the rest at this point (except Bedard and Fantilli), they all showed quite well in pre-season

I didn't include Samuel Savoie since he definitely won't be back by Christmas time.

Wondering if we ever had that many early promotions lol - 10 players?! Generally, it's 2-4
