WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

Wondering if we ever had that many early promotions lol - 10 players?! Generally, it's 2-4

I believe the mid to late 80s it was close to that.

But my lord, 10 players! I suspect by the time December camp opens we'll be missing 4 players.

It's funny, going into the year I thought Minten would be a bubble guy for the WJC team. But the fact that he made the Leafs is probably a sign that he should definitely be on the team if Toronto ends up releasing him.
It's okay, there's someone on this board who is stupidly adamant Marner wouldn't sniff Team Canada, shows opinions can be way off.

In the late 00's it was close to 10 - I think, we maxed out at 8 in 08'. I agree, over time, the players will either end up in the CHL or AHL and play at the World Juniors.

To the players credit, it's a hell of a crop of kids.

We have a good group of posters here, who all get along, so please don't come in and be a jerk. Thank you.

Nice to see Sportsnet carrying the Bedard game, tonight - God knows, there's NO Jays game :( :) . I sure hope the kid plays well - it's going to be difficult (next to impossible) to live up to expectations.

He did; he's already so hard to play against, it's only going to get worse for the rest of the league from there.

I'm someone who believes he could use some more time in the CHL / AHL - not because he's not good enough, but because he needs more size. Still, I thought he played well last night and got better as the game went on.

It's beginning to look at lot like Christmas... With this cool weather we're having, the shorter days, and nothing but work work work from now until December I am just dreaming of vacation, a nice fire, and watching the World Juniors (during the day as it should be!) non-stop for days on end. Can't wait. So happy games are on from 6am until like 4pm this year. So stoked. Go Canada go!

I think in 10-15 games, you'll feel differently. He's still adjusting; my only little "*" is if Taylor Hall gets injured and he's suddenly left to play with AHLers in the NHL, that could be dangerous.

I just don't want to see Bedard get hurt because he was rushed - that came to mind when I saw the size difference between him and the other NHL'ers.

When Sid came up, he was the same height as Connor (according to the NHL website, there is one inch difference), but Sid was more SOLID than Bedard. A better center of gravity. Bedard will get there, he just needs some time.

I've been a Leaf fan my whole life but, for some reason, I'm starting to get pleasure when I see them fail / lose. When Montreal scored first, tonight, I burst into laughter - instead of tears.

Anyone else experience this with a team you love?

LOL.... 2-0... and on it goes. :help:

I think Connor is at the same level as Crosby; he's just not built like Sid - a smaller structure. Bedard is already in the same sphere as Pat Kane.

If by chance this team happens to acquire Minten or Poitras those are big additions
We are just an after thought in 2024 :sarcasm: - let Sweden and the U.S. be the Big Dogs, we'll fly under the radar.

But, you are right, if we get the right players back, the upside for this team is huge.

Bedard absolutely does not need time in either of those leagues for gaining strength. You can gain strength at the NHL level, which is where hes staying. The strength will come with age, growth and conditioning

What kind of injury does Matthew Savoie have?

How long is he out for?
Already skating and practicing supposedly. My guess is early-mid November he’ll play games in WHL, then off to World Juniors.

Sid was more solid, I would agree, but look at clips of him from 2005-'06, it is easy to forget just how much of a babyface he had. He was slimmer than he is now too. Maybe still a bit more solid than Bedard is at the same age, but he was getting lots of liberties taken against him. Derian Hatcher hit his mouth pretty hard once. I can remember the idea at that time that Sid was going to get worn down. Well, here he is in 2023, still an elite player. And in his rookie year he played 81 games. I think Bedard is just as smart as Sid on the ice so he'll know when to pick his spots.

So if there was a World Cup in 2024, and I know there isn't last I checked, does Bedard make the team?

Good post. Well said.

The World Cup is supposed to be in Feb 2025 - but don't hold your breath. He has a very good chance of making that team.

He would make my team if a best-on-best tournament were happening tomorrow. But we all know how Hockey Canada operates. It is far from a guarantee in February 2025 at 19 years of age.

If he were to play any games, it would probably just be sparingly as a 13th. forward and PP time with McDavid and MacKinnon.
