WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

Not sure why anyone would wake up for this. Record it and watch it whenever you wake up minus commercials. go Canada
I would have if it started early in my area. I have to stay up for a 10:30 start tonight. I am happy to do that too.

The struggles in clearing the puck were pretty horrifying at times but on the whole we handled the Finns far more easily than we typically do. You could count their high quality 5v5 chances on one hand and they were fortunate to enjoy such an edge in PP opportunities.

It felt more like playing the Swiss than the Finns, honestly. Very encouraging start.

I think that EN goal for Poitras is going to be big for his confidence going forward. He looked (to me but I also missed the first period) like he was gripping his stick a bit too hard and maybe wanting to do too much as the most experienced guy there.

Now he will probably be able to relax and play the game that brings him so much success.

Am I off on this one? Maybe somebody was watching him with a keener eye than me.

Empty seats, no 4K broadcasting, the ice is so big that the camera angle feels way too far from the action even on my 85 inch TV. Really bad TV experience all around. That tournament should always be played in Canada.

I'm okay with that. :)

That would be a great way to sell and spread the game...

An attendance of almost 10000 is also higher than what USA - Finland drew last year in Canada, which would be an eqivalent. So not sure what you're on about?

@Dominance with the best take, as always.

Where is everyone? I recorded it and watched when I got up. Maybe everyone else did the same? My take...

Sloppy game but a good one for Canada. Nothing went right, including a ton of PK, but we managed to win handily. Ice was a mess. Goaltending was very strong (we don't get to say THAT very often) but the D needs a LOT of work. The offense will be better going forward.

With this win, Canada will finish either first or second in the pool. There are worse ways to start - see 2023. All things considered, a good day.

Game tomorrow against Latvia, then we get a day off before facing Sweden. Sweden will have back to back games - who made the schedule because that's a bonus for Canada?

Feeling pretty good about the team. :)

Well you should watch the first because Poitras and Savoie were the best players on the ice. But anyway, that’s how Poitras plays - he’s a pug hog and a puck hound. He holds onto the puck for . . . ev . . . er looking to make a play and then suddenly makes a pass when no one’s expecting it, least of all his teammates. Got some Marc Savard in him in that respect, although Savvy did everything more quickly, and better. But Potsy’s still young.

Another thing he’s great at is hounding the puck and puck retrieval. He’s been good in that regard so far but not great. Probably the big ice as it takes longer to get to the boards and into the corners to get the puck back.

Canada's trek to a Golden Three peat is off to a good start, it's not as flashy a team that we've been accustomed to but they have the tools to walk away with a 3rd straight crown.

I was impressed by the boys today. First game is always tough but they started to put it together.
Me, too.

We need to grow as a team and get better each game but that will come. As for the negativity in this thread, I'm used to it. Unless Canada wins every game 20-0, there will be posters dumping on the team. It's too bad but it's the same every year.

Repeat from another thread...

Because reseeding of the semis is based on goal diff, Canada's gonna need to run up the score against Latvia.

The U.S. played their weakest opponent and only won by 3. A bit of a shock and an opportunity for Canada. If we can run up the score against Latvia and Germany, and, of course, beat Sweden on Friday in regulation, we could be Top Seed going into the Semis.

Having said that, that can be a curse - Slovakia looks GOOD, but I'd rather play Slovakia in the semis than the U.S. or Sweden <-- maybe I'll change my mind. :)

The ignore feature works really well on the new HF, I implore you people to use it and get this thread on track!
Difficult to do when you have a confused gramps posting about his retirement that no one gives a shit about.

On topic:
I like the snarl this team has this year, it'll be useful when we need to grind out some games. Not sure how they're going to contain Hutson though.

Apparently the Luneau sickness is pretty serious. He's still in hospital care without a diagnosis and family is expected to come over.

This is crazy. He must have caught some severe flu. Hoping he recovers quickly, and thankful that whatever it is did not spread across the entire team.

Rousseau is our guy, hope that works out.
I would have preferred St. Hilaire, I think. We’ll have our answer in a couple weeks!

Wood bumped down to 13th forward, much the best course.

I see a smaller guy with not the best positioning or smoothness of movements, or exceptional reaction time. Could be disastrous against Sweden or USA, who have guys who can pick corners up and down their lineups.
