WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

I cannot believe the weekend is over. Where did the time go?

Need to get up early, tomorrow, and watch Canada vs Finland.

It would be nice to see Canada lose a RR game - we always play better in the playoffs when we do. If not, hopefully the pre-tournament loss to the U.S. will do.

Seems like an early (game 1 or 2) RR game lose really galvanizes the Canadian squad to roll into the medal round. But that spirited pre-tournament game may have their blood up already so it's possible they're already approaching the whole round robin in a more determined fashion. And that's not to count Finland out - they've shown so often that they are a tough nut in their own right.

Hell man, I catch myself sometimes wondering at not making it to Hamilton for their hosting of the '85 tournament. It ALL goes fast.

Again. I don't document anything. I don't record any hockey games I watch and I don't record any conversations I have either. I don't screenshot every article I read etc. If you have any sort of interest in the WHL or the CHL, if you watch the games or even just have a network of people watching then you know about the reputation of lots of players. Unfortunately that doesn't always match suspensions handed out. That's the same in any league. How many times did Mathew Tkachuk get suspended in the NHL? Once? He didn't even get a hearing for most of the stuff he did. He's actively trying to injure players. For years. The dops doesn't care. He kicked at Marincin's leg after the final whistle knowing it was Marincin's first game back from injury. He got nothing for it and there's probably no video either. Yet still everybody knows about Tkachuk's reputation.

I don't record or document anything either, and I think Fraser Minten is a good, hard, clean player. An example to us all.

I guess my opinion is every bit as goods as yours, if not better!

Been watching international hockey since I was a kid. Lots of NHL teams I dislike. Never once bothered me those team's players then happened to be on the team I was cheering for. Nor should it.

I was actually surprised when they announced the final roster than the Leafs actually had 2 players suiting up for Team Canada.

I was like "how? Dubas traded away picks like candy?"

But it doesn't matter, it's not about their NHL teams.

And the amount of hate over Minten being named captain, kinda confirms some suspicions with regards to certain posters on here and well maybe we just take some mental notes there.

I wanted to clarify though that I couldn't care less about the Leafs or the Canadiens but I do watch a lot of CHL and I just don't think Minten and Beck are role models based on their CHL actions.

Ok well in regards to Minten specifically his leadership qualities are like the main thing about him. They are what make him good. There has been nothing but good things said about how he is as a teammate and such. Nobody cares about your specific opinion that they made a dirty hit and thus are bad captains or leaders. Trouba is the dirtiest player in the NHL yet hes a captain of a top team.

Look. I already said that I'm not gonna continue this stupid discussion with people who obviously did not watch these guys on a regular basis. You obviously did not read my posts though so you triggered me and I feel like I have to put things right.

If you read through this thread you'll see me stating several times that I like these two guys as prospects. I even cheered for that Petes team quite a bit...something I rarely do. I wrote that here in this thread. Beck just crossed the line and he did it more than once. The lifted ban was a scandal. This has nothing to do with a rumour. Since it was playoffs and affected the Memorial cup it's all well documented. This is a story for another day and another thread though. If you missed it, feel free to read up on it.

I'm not an expert and I never said that. I'm not a scout, not a fan of a team either. There are people who know far more and better than me. I do however follow the CHL (granted mostly OHL/WHL) quite a bit so I know more about prospects playing CHL than the average poster that doesn't follow the CHL at all.

I didn't. I wrote that most here don't follow the CHL at all. That becomes clear when reading their posts. I also hardly ever spotted any of them posting in the draft section...which they most certainly would if they actually watched junior club hockey. Just because others don't have a clue that doesn't imply that I'm an expert. If you read the draft threads you'll find that there are much better posters than me.


I explained my opinion already and I can't repeat it on and on. Everything beyond is a discussion for another thread, not this one. And since 9 out of 10 posters obviously don't follow the CHL at all but still think they know better it's a useless discussion. So unless you have something new I wish you merry christmas and am gonna say that I'm out of this discussion.

When I retired, I promised I'd destroy my alarm clock. I never kept that promise but I seldom use it and I certainly don't miss getting up and going to work. At the risk of telling you something you already know, work saps the life out of you.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow. I expect Canada’s 4 second lines strategy will lead to Finland having a really good shot at taking this game. Hoping for the best though!

You're the first person I've ever heard say they aren't a fan of any team and also declare their superior knowledge about the CHL but that they're not an expert.

Very humble of you to admit these things and also to recognize that your posts are not really making this a better reading experience.

He learned them from Stankoven, Zellweger etc. Nothing to do with the Leafs.
