WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

Anyone know where I can find the...

TSN Hockey 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship Preview Show?

YouTube has 2021 and 2022 but not 2023. :(

It’s broken up into a

It’s broken up into a bunch of different segments on the TSN site I think.
Thanks! I agree but I can't find the segment on McTavish's save - there's a 4 minute clip on how all the players reacted / breaking down everything. I had it on my DVR but the DVR had to be replaced. Grrrrr.

Well you should watch the first because Poitras and Savoie were the best players on the ice. But anyway, that’s how Poitras plays - he’s a pug hog and a puck hound. He holds onto the puck for . . . ev . . . er looking to make a play and then suddenly makes a pass when no one’s expecting it, least of all his teammates. Got some Marc Savard in him in that respect, although Savvy did everything more quickly, and better. But Potsy’s still young.

Another thing he’s great at is hounding the puck and puck retrieval. He’s been good in that regard so far but not great. Probably the big ice as it takes longer to get to the boards and into the corners to get the puck back.
Indeed, it's been an adjustment even for the BOS vets, Poitras dropping no look passes when they think the play's about to be dead. I haven't watched a single game yet but I wouldn't be surprised if his wingers are struggling to adjust to his playmaking style/abilities.

most of the criticism about Poitras has been about him holding onto the puck too long, not that he's making 1000 IQ passes guys aren't ready for

I think Poitras will get better and better. I think he just sees open ice and thinks he can skate instead of making the quick plays, which ends up not being the case.

He’s a really smart player, high hockey IQ but it seems he’s struggling to adapt to the larger ice.

He’s been pretty meh after a good first period against the Finns.

Good test tomorrow. Looks like a lot of the Swedes were on the U-18 team that demolished us twice. 8-0 is probably the worst pasting in TC history. Good time to return the favour.

Seems stupid not to have a backup goalie with at least some live time in the cage but braintrust apparently thinks otherwise.

I'll be swimming until 2, come home and catch the rest of the game. We need to win in regulation.

If they have to play Sweden again at some point, learn from today’s mistakes. Capitalize on rush chances because in-zone against Sweden they’ve failed to penetrate the scoring areas. North south as much as possible on zone entries instead of slowing it down east west. And players like Minten and Dumais need to see the ice less. Bonk as well having issues today

Losing a preliminary game is whatever. I remember the 2020 team getting killed by Russia in the round robin.

The issue is that these guys have no intensity, no chemistry, and are either clinically Pejorative Slured or horrifically coached with how they play in their own end.

Team doesn't seem particularly well coached. I mean a too many men penalty on the goalie pull?
That’s the least of the coaching concerns.

Most pathetic showing of any TC ever. The bright side is that we got beat pretty badly by Russia in 2020 and went on to win. This game doesn’t mean much…except for the fact that it showed this team is utterly braindead under any kind of forecheck and has next to zero offensive chemistry or creativity. Unprecedented dearth of skill.

Tried to play way too cute and passive. They passed up multiple point blank chances and just generally played soft.

Lots of perimeter play and lack of intensity on the forecheck.

Deserved the loss 100% today. No urgency to start the 3rd period or desperation. Not encouraging to see at all, I didn’t like that style of play at all.

I'm a Leafs fan and I have no idea why Minten is on PP1. His role should be more of a 3rd line centre, he's a defensive guy.

Poitras and Savoie continue to do their poor man impressions of Strome and Marner for Canada, they've been very bad from guys I expected to lead the offense

Defense seems scary with all these injuries.

Hilarious that goalie feels like the least of our problems considering the pre-tourney games

Its very poorly coached. Minten should be a PK/checking line guy, but they're giving him Getzlaf minutes and exposing his lower end offense. He's a 3C-4C, and was never projected to be more than that, which is fine. Celebrini is getting checking line minutes as their best offensive player. Poitras' selfish play is killing anyone around him, Savoie deserves a look with someone that can distrubute. Wood is warming the bench so much that you wonder why they brought him at all. Its just bad decisions over and over.

It is slightly ironic that all the talk on this team leading into the tournament was how bad the goaltending is and heading into NYE it is one of the few things on this team in a good place. They all need to learn a lot from this one. They just weren't clinic at all in the offensive zone. Need to be better.

Lots of lessons to take away from that game. Placing 2nd in the group isn’t worst case scenario. Being a little humble for the rest of the tourney is a good thing.

Wake up and get after it again boys.

I don't know of it's because he's a year older, but I expect more from Cowan than Minten.

That said, there's a lot of forwards who have been a disappointment.

The Q isn't what it was and the scoring there is now, more than probably ever more in line with the dub and O, but Dumais has been underwhelming for a dude who's team tried to get him to play in the A.

If we were going to have a BAD game, better now.

Having said that, Sweden was AWESOME !!! Bravo!

Minten is the older one man. I think Cowan has been okay for an 18 year old on a team that feels discombobulated

Agree on Dumais tho

Canada had their chances including a breakaway but they just kept mishandling the puck. They needed a voice in the room to calm everyone down

First, NOTHING, including the breakaway, went right for us.

Second, Sweden played a PERFECT game. Top to bottom, they were awesome and kicked our ass.

Canada usually plays better after a RR loss. Germany on NYE, Czechia in the Quarters, the U.S. in the Semis, Sweden in the GMG.

Canada in 2020 had a lot of good leadership. You had captain Hayton battling through injury to play in the gold medal game and a handful of returning players.

This year? I don't know. Canada looks like a team that can't win the tight games. Pre tournament vs USA you have Beck making a horrendous give away to lose. Today was just an all over disaster. Over passing, terrible break away attempts, inability to get the puck out and then you have the coach making a too many men mistake at the worst time.

I almost wish they lost 8-0 because then you could chalk it up to a bad game but the way they've played tight games is very concerning.
