I’m with Dominance on this one. On paper, I don’t think this team outscores the American’s, or maybe even the Swedes, but having elite defensive forwards and penalty killers at this age could make the difference. Poitras, Celebrini, Minten, Beck, Cowan, Danielson and Allard are all very sound defensively. The forward group reminds me of the 05/06 and 06/07 teams that won gold.
Yeah, I don't see Canada as the favourites here.

I think on North American ice, their roster competition would make sense even given the pure talent deficit. But in Europe, I think this roster philosophy is flawed.

Some of the Canadians' bigger/slower players could get exposed on the big ice by elite skaters.

There exists sacrifice in this life, sometimes you have to make them.
I agree but if you're a young kid, enjoying that big pay cheque, wanting to buy mom and dad something BIG/special over Christmas, a person might take the easy way out and stay home.

I agree with you, but the reality is most of our best offensive talent is in the NHL. I'm a fan of guys like Heidt and Cristall, but I don't think they'd make an appreciable difference against the likes of USA and Sweden, and they were both pretty bad on big ice at the U-18s (Cristall did get a bit better as the tournament progressed). We might as well try our best to prevent goals if we're going to have a hard time scoring them.

You're right but money talks. I like to think I'd do the selfless thing but...
Oh for sure but in Poitras' case you know they (the bruins) have told him their plan for him and he is comfortable knowing he will make some good coin in the future.

Looking at Wright's position only making AHL money and not getting to play for team Canada, I actually tend to agree its probably best to leave him in one place to play a bunch of games for once. Kids been getting jerked through too many leagues and not enough games. Plus he has already won gold there, not much to "learn" there that you cant learn in Coachella.

No I agree. Canada would be the clear favourite with all their players available.

I'm not passing judgement on the roster construction that much. I wouldn't have taken Heidt or Cristall either (especially the latter). I'm just evaluating the team as is. Their options were more limited this year - which is why I don't think they're the favourite.

It’s also tough to miss NHL games for the WJC when you think about how fragile a NHL career is.

For a top prospect that will get opportunities— it doesn’t matter as much. But overall, taking the initial opportunity and running with it is your best shot at becoming a long term NHLer. Hard to give that up for a few weeks.. what if the team starts buzzing with you gone and you end up on the 4th line with plugs? Then after not producing you’re sent back to junior and have to re-make the team again next year? Or god forbid you get hurt?

I get why a player wouldn’t want to.

I think if it were up to Wright, he probably would choose to stay in Coachella for the reasons you mentioned. He needs to develop in pro hockey. He already won Gold. There isn't anything for him to learn playing a Junior All-Star tournament.

I wasn't replying to you. So why reply to me just to make a troll-y, snarky comment?

It's a legitimate topic of discussion and several others are making the same case.

Thanks for responding. I hope you find some happiness in life. Take care.
Boomers can't handle criticism, it's par for the course, especially with that poster, some of the things they say is absolutely hilarious though.

Excited about it being back in europe, I like the challenge and as long as they dont make the crowd too corporate you get a different type of feel and it's a lot of fun.

Pretty pathetic behaviour. Like if you don't want to engage in the subject matter, then just ignore the posts. Responding to everything you dislike with some bad-faith, snarky comment is a sad way to live.

You guys just had a disagreement that's all, he's a good poster as are you.

Back to hockey, games start soon.

Imagine having Bedard + Fantilli + Benson + Korchenski in the roster

Well sure, but that's the case nearly every year - the best talent graduates early, regardless of country. I just try to enjoy the games for what they are and seeing the players who are playing.

One of my favorite aspects is seeing some unheralded prospect make a name for themselves.
