Yes. I always look forward to the NYE game. Germany is disappointing.
Absolutely crazy to think the last time Canada played the NYE game vs the US it was in the 2017 tournament (NYE 2016). Feels like growing up it was a near-annual tradition.

My buddy looked forward to it so much and had his glasses broken on a trip we were on and missed it (he's basically blind without them). To think it was at a minimum 8 year wait/mistake. LOL.

As always, I hope Canada loses a game in the Round Robin. Running the table is seldom a good thing. Adversity before the playoffs is a GREAT thing.

I wish Russia was here to make things more competitive.
Agree with both these statements. Unfortunately all tournaments 2022 onwards will have an asterisk beside it, given Russia was not allowed to play. I hope like last year we are treated to a resurgent and legit team stepping up to join Canada, USA, Sweden, and Finland, like we were with the Czechs. If not it could be a while with just those team in the final four.

Can someone tell me which still-eligible players will be absent from the tournament because of pro commitments. For Canada, I know of Bedard, Korchinski, Fantilli, and Benson plus Cooley for the U.S. Kemell for Finland and Carlsson for Sweden. Others?

Shane Wright, Juraj Slafkovksy, Simon Nemec
Shane Wright, playing in the AHL, is just wrong - unless he said he didn't want to go.

It’s especially baffling considering Zacha is injured for Boston too. But I’ll take it!
I dunno if I’d say “baffling”. The more I thought about it the more it was probably done mostly as a favor (for lack of better word) to him. It’s a few games midseason vs an opportunity to play for Canada. That kind of gesture goes a long way and why Sweeney seems to have such a good reputation.

I’ve always heard that if given the choice, players would always prefer to play with their NHL teams instead of their World Junior team.

Team Canada really should have been going for the 5-peat this Christmas, but we'll file 2021 as shit happens sometimes. They were the best/and better team that tournament, but sometimes the better team doesn't always come home with the glory.
Lessons for this year.

Hopefully the boys entertain us this Christmas with some inspired play. 🍁

Can't argue your first point...seems like it's just what the doctor ordered each year.

Russia hasn't won gold in over a decade. I do love beating them though.

Poitras said it was his goal to make the WJC squad in the summer.

This might have been something he mentioned to the Bruins in training camp as well. I think letting him realize that goal while playing top minutes might have been the reason Boston let him go.

Otherwise, he has been solid in the NHL and is playing well above World Junior level.

Regardless, a major boost for Team Canada to get a two-way center with such a refined skillset.

I haven’t been following this team or these players closely

I asked the same question I’ll ask again

Is this a physical team ? Hard to play against? I cycle team ? I have been reading conflicting reports

Some say this is a physical team others say not

Last summers team Defense was big and slow very slow. Is this the same typ of team

Aren't they playing the Denmark under 25 team I swear I seen that somewhere online week or 2 ago as a exhibition game on top of the USA switz ones but not heard anything since

They are playing them today, won't be televised.

All of what you list is the type of team they are going for and I think the right mix of players is there to do it if that helps.

I think I if it’s someone who’s played for TC in the past that makes sense but IIRC Poitras has yet to ever play for TC before

My understanding was that you don’t get your NHL paycheque while on loan. If true, that would make one helluva difference to a player’s preference. Lol

Yikes! That explains a lot.

First, you're giving up a pay cheque.
Second, you're giving up time with your family over the holidays.
Third, the games are in Europe - a long way from home.

I could see myself thinking twice about going.
