One thing I will never buy is "we don't think we're in a position to spend because we're waiting on our young players to develop". That is complete nonsense. If you're spending money on a prized free agent it's gonna be a lengthy contract and a player who immediately makes you better. The idea should be that in 2-3 years that free agent is still producing AND now your young players are contributing. It's just a complete BS line of thinking from management of any team. An excuse to not spend.

It's not ideal to have players in their prime on a team that isn't a true contender, but it's not ideal to stop spending like a top 3 (what they according to forbes still are) franchise, either.

The Rangers did spend on a team that was in last place and it worked out for them eventually, they just needed their young core to arrive.
The Mets got laughed at for spending like drunken sailors and then not making the playoffs, but their spending still led to them acquiring top prospects by getting rid of the old stars.

This was the year to go after pitching, the next off-seasons will not feature that many great arms. And these that are available like Burnes, will be coveted by more teams.

Where does the pitching come from in the future? Teams rarely deal them away even when they are on one year deals (i.e. Burnes, Bieber) and the farm won't produce much in that regard.

I’d still work to get Montgomery but of course not giving Boras that ridiculous contract

You can’t have all these prospects grow up like Buffalo Sabres prospects in a losing environment

Baltimore lost 100 games multiple times

Boston could not survive the Orioles last decade

2018 115 losses
2019 108 losses
2020 covid but they sucked
2021 110 losses

Even in 2023 they got swept round 1

The Red Sox would be dead if they did this

They could probably sign Montgomery & Duvall and win 85 games and it would still be crap

So, what you're telling me is that Baltimore's prospects grew up in a losing environment?
Good point

I’m no longer concerned if Red Sox lose 100-115 games if picking top of draft they can get Rutschman & Holiday

Might be beneficial to get rid of all vets and get a couple of 45-117

People will be mad but time will go by fast

I make a point about how the damage done to a prospect that "grows up in a losing environment" might be a bit overstated, and suddenly I want the Red Sox to lose 117 games?

At this point I would prefer the embarrassment for ownership of a 70 win season than the middling .500 record as you rack up last place finishes in a good division. So if you were to tell me the Sox will go 81-81 and finish in last again, f that. Lose more games at that point.

Read something on the Yankees recently and they didn't go for Sale because they didn't think they were there yet. That was 2017. Yankees lost in 7 in the ACLS... COst themselves a title prob

Dodgers swooping in to take our leftover scraps...can't even let us dream about the return of James Paxton.

Dodgers talking to Paxton (1/12 is the rumor)

I’m gonna be furious when he pitches to a 2.80 ERA over 150 innings next year
